Bottomless Jack wrote: Before coming into the WWF Chris Chavis was known as “War Eagle’ Chris Chavis in South Atlantic Pro Wrestling which was televised in the Carolinas, and feuded with Robert Fuller and his protege Vincent Torelli (AKA Ken Shamrock) in 1990/1991. During the Spring of 1991 the WWF began a search for a new “Indian” gimmick wrestler and Chavis was given at least 3 or 4 tryout matches along with Steve Gatorwolf, Charlie Norris and others. Eventually Chavis was chosen and was to be brought in by the end of ’91 under his real name. Vince changed the gimmick from a guy with Indian Heritage to a full blooded Indian and renamed him Tatanka by the final Vignette that aired.
