But little is known on their ways of penetration and how they contributed to developing economies in countries which, like France, lacked mines. Proton activation analysis of trace-elements in coined metal has enabled to estimate for the first time the share of gold from Brazil (ea. 30 %) and from Colombia (ea. 8 %) in French gold issues. An economist and a numismatist have joined the physicist in combining their respective approach (modelisation of macroeconomic aggregates, publication of new statistical data on French mint figures, conclusions from analyses).Together with New World silver, Brazilian and Colombian gold came into France as a result of trade surplus over Spain and Portugal. it allowed the money supply to increase substantially and favoured the take-off of French economy. Its monetised GDP increased ea. two times from 1726 to 1785.
Without this increase in specie supply, France would not have achieved the economic performances it did over the period which Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie calls in his preface the « glorious sixty years » of the 18th century.

This series, catalogued here by Georg Schaaf, provides a representative sample of Constantinople gold issues. Drawing also on teaching experience with French students and in the Dumbarton Oaks Summer Seminar for Coins and Seals between 2002 and 2013, the volume offers an outline of Byzantine numismatics in its historical context. It begins with a summary of the evolution of this coinage, whose relative stability and resilience over a millenium makes it an exception in the Medieval and modern world. Its iconography and the most recent interpretations of its visual and written message are envisaged. The various uses of this pluri-metallic and multi-denominational coinage lead to a study of its role as an instrument of imperial finances on the one hand, with its regulation and manipulation in times of crisis, and on the other hand as the means of private transactions. As such it was both hoarded or exchanged and a final chapter considers its circulation and rate of exchange, within the empire and beyond, from Britain and Scandinavia to India and China.
This Précis de numismatique byzantine is amply illustrated with photos from Dumbarton Oaks holdings, tables, graphs and maps, all in color. A few boxes deal with basic questions like hammer striking, obverse and revers, die orientation, how to describe a coin, overstrikes, countermarks and graffiti. Thirty pages of glossary, uptodate bibliography and index aim at facilitating the orientation of the reader. It is hoped that this unique synthesis of methods and major results obtained by research over the last four decades will fill a gap in the available bibliography.

As comparable to modern free markets, with differences in scale not quality? As controlled and dominated by the State? Or as a third way, in completely different terms, as free but regulated? In Trade and Markets in Byzantium seventeen scholars address these and related issues by reexamining and reinterpreting the material and textual record from Byzantium and its hinterland for local, regional, and interregional trade. Special emphasis is placed on local trade, which has been understudied. To comprehend the recovery of long-distance trade from its eighth-century nadir to the economic prosperity enjoyed in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the authors analyze the variety and complexity of the exchange networks, the role of money as a measure of exchange, and the character of local markets. This collection of groundbreaking research will prove to be indispensable for anyone interested in economic history in antiquity and the medieval period.

The results are illustrated in the studies here which look in detail at standards of refining and processes of debasement. This analysis can also identify sources of metal, and explains the enigmatic appearance of concave gold coins n the 11th century. The volume itself opens with a comparison of the methods of numismatics and sigillography, and an epigraphic study showing the conservatism of the Byzantine coinage up until 1204. The following articles turn to the finances and economy of Byzantium, making full use of recent advances in numismatics. They aim to assess the importance of the state and other economic agents during the empire’s different phases of expansion and contraction, and demonstrate how fiscal documents and legislation on treasure hoards can be used as evidence for the state of public finances

The present volume takes place within the long-established and well-trodden path of angelology. Angels are inexhaustible, so we have not sought to produce a “Summa theologica” about them. Our aim is to propose a journey across the centuries from Antiquity to Byzantium in order to capture the moment when the multifaceted figure of the angel emerges and asserts itself. The idea and representation of the angel is anything but straightforward. In addition to the duo associating “conception” and “representation”, we thought interesting to stress this third term: “perception.” One cannot be solely rational in the exegesis of thoughts or images when approaching the angelic phenomenon. Other more flexible, more imaginative cognitive paths open up thanks to the attention paid to a reality rich in nuances and meanings. It is indeed an invention in the full sense of the term. The angel cannot be explained only by syncretism. It is not enough to retrace in texts, monuments, and iconography, the ways in which the biblical angels— in the Old and New Testament—, would have melted into their counterparts from Graeco-Roman culture and other civilizations around the Mediterranean, producing so to speak a kind of kaleidoscopic creature, a daimon with wings tinged with Judaism, Gnosis and Manichaeism, fascinated for Neoplatonism, or, yielding to exotic temptations, even venturing into Mazdeism and beyond. The Christian angel is a hybrid; but he acquires a unique personality, whose strength is measured by his posterity.
