The excavation revealed an important Late Antique site that flourished on the possible site of an ancient port. The excavation of the North Sector revealed a large building complex arranged in wings around an open space-courtyard.

The rich finds of the hilltop settlement were excavated in 2000-2001 by the 9th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities during works for the construction of a pipeline for the “Reinforcement of the Aqueduct connecting Mornos and Yliki”. The excavation of important residential and burial remains of the MH and LH period on the summit of the hill testifies the prominence of the site and its participation in the developments of the period, but also its important role as a secondary rural center in the periphery of the great palatial center of Thebes. The excavation and the trial trenches have also revealed an extended late roman settlement built at the west and north slope of the hilltop. Pottery, coins and other finds indicate that the settlement was inhabited during the 4th century, however it reached its pick during the 6th and early 7th century AD. The settlement overlooks the Asopos valley and was clearly connected to the exploitation of the fertile land around it. Located only 2,5 km south of the ancient city of Tanagra it was clearly connected to the cultivation of the ancient city’s chora. The pottery finds demonstrate the connection of this relatively isolated agricultural settlement to the Late Antique trade routes. Traces of fortification walls of early byzantine times, prove that at some point the settlement was fortified to probably be protected by Slav invasions and other dangers during the 6th century. The question whether Kastri functioned as a refuge settlement after the abandonment of ancient Tanagra in the 7th century remains to be answered after the careful study of the pottery and other finds from the excavation.

and lamps, from the rescue excavation that took place in 2007 and 2011 at the port of modern Kryoneri, presumably the port of ancient Kalydon in Aetolia, on the north coast of the Golf of Patras, in Western Greece.
Te last phase of the building complex with bathing facilities was probably related to an early Christian basilica dating to the 5th and 6th centuries AD. Te fnds range from the 2nd to the late 6th century as indicated by
the pottery types and the numismatic evidence. Pottery consists mainly of a large variation of transport amphorae, a characteristic group of cooking vessels and a smaller group of tableware. Amphorae types, such as
Late Roman 4/ Almagro 54, Kapitän 2, variations of Late Roman 2 and Late Roman 1, Agora M254, and Cretan amphorae have been identifed, as an indication of the trading routes between Western Greece and the
Mediterranean. Te surface layers of the excavation yielded a distinctive group of grazed byzantine and post
byzantine pottery mainly imported from the Italian peninsula. Teir date ranges from the 13th to the end of
the 16th century and verifes the importance of Kryoneri as a port between the Adriatic Sea and the Corinthian Gulf during a period of constant conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and Venice.
