It offers a fresh approach to the history and archaeology of the Cyclades under the light of current archaeological investigations. It is an attempt to interpret human-environmental interaction in order to “read” the relationship between islands, settlements, landscapes and seascapes in the context of the diverse and highly interactive Mediterranean world. The methodology proposed is an interdisciplinary approach, which combines archaeological evidence, literary sources, and observations of the sites and micro-landscapes as a whole, with the advantages offered by the application of new technologies in archaeological research (Geographic Information Systems). The islands of Paros and Naxos are used as case-studies. It is a challenging task to trace how these neighbouring insular communities reacted under the same general circumstances pertaining in the Aegean and to what extent the landscape played a role in this process.

Ports and harbours are not regarded as isolated dots on a map, but instead, they are viewed as parts of various networks with different types of interaction and as cultural products of political, social and economic circumstances. This human-centered approach puts at the centre of attention people, their actions and experiences, as well as their engagement with natural environment. Maritime mobility and interaction are considered as key factors of island life. Due to the complexity of the topic, this research adopts an interdisciplinary framework which includes historical and archaeological approaches, combined with spatial analytical toolsoffered by the Digital Humanities (Geographical Information Systems).

It can support them to manage change wisely, redefining themselves in a constantly changing world. This paper contributes to the understanding of how to establish a state-of-the-art management model for museums and CH institutions, which takes into account the latest developments in the field. It aims to a) bring forward the main issues and principles that need to be taken into account during the drafting procedure of a CHM plan, b) explore current state-of-affairs of professional practice in the CH sector across Europe, c) offer clear and concise information on the CH sector needs, challenges and bottlenecks, and d) eventually, provide practical recommendations that need to be taken into account so as to support communication between CH professionals and their various audiences, with a special focus on young people and local communities. This study is part of the research project "Redefining the future of cultural heritage, through a disruptive model of sustainability" (ReInHerit), which has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (https://www.reinherit.eu/).

In this context, CHM can support museums in their efforts to play a vital role in fighting the illicit trafficking of cultural property. This article focuses on how museums can benefit from the various advantages offered by CHM, specifically with respect to the fight against the illicit trade of cultural property and its return and restitution to its countries of origin. In this light, it deals with both proactive and repressive policies, discussing how museums can maintain their credibility and ensure that they operate in accordance with high legal and ethical standards. Finally, the article discusses how museums and countries have dealt with return and restitution claims in recent years. In this context the use of cutting-edge technologies, such as 3D printing, is also discussed. This work derives from the research project “Redefining the future of cultural heritage, through a disruptive model of sustainability” (ReInHerit), which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Cultural Heritage Management (CHM) is the main vehicle for helping them to face these challenges and secure sustainable competitiveness. This chapter aims to offer a review of the main issues to be covered in the context of CHM without being exhaustive, as this exercise would require a monograph. The aim is to cover the basic issues that should be addressed by a CHI bearing in mind that CHIs may have varying goals depending on their nature and mission. This work derives from the research project Redefining the future of cultural heritage, through a disruptive model of sustainability (ReInHerit), which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme.
