From Ancient Greek νυχθήμερον (nukhthḗmeron), noun use of the neuter singular form of νυχθήμερος (nukhthḗmeros, “lasting a day and night”), from νύξ (núx, “night”) + ἡμέρα (hēméra, “day”).

(uncommon) A period of one day and one night, a date: in the West, a period of 24 consecutive hours.

Nychthemeron or nycthemeron or nuchthemeron (Greek νυχθήμερον from the words nykt- "night", and (h)emera "day, daytime") is a period of 24 consecutive hours. It is sometimes used, especially in technical literature, to avoid the ambiguity inherent in the term day.
