メッセージの交換においてオブジェクトの振る舞いを決める規則の集まり
メッセージのフォーマット,及び二つの計算機がそのメッセージを交換するために従わなければならない規則の形式的記述.プロトコルは,計算機間インタフェースの低レベルの詳細(例えば,ビット及びバイトが回線を通して送信される際の順番),又は割付けプログラム間の高レベルの交換(例えば,二つのプログラムがインターネットを通してファイルを転送する方法)を記述できる
