Hi everybody. I see that there hasn't been much activity in this community lately, but all of these recipes look delicious! & I've been a Francesca Lia Block fan for years, I always come away from her books hungry! I've just been teaching myself/ my mother has been teaching me to cook so the food I cook is inspired by Francesca Lia Block novels but not directly from them.

4 (6 ounce) containers of vanilla yogurt
4 teaspoons chopped walnuts
1/4 teaspoon rum extract (if desired)
Makes 4 servings
What to do:

2)Stir in orange juice and rum extract(optional). Cook an additional minute or until liquid is thick and syrupy. Remove from heat. Set aside 4 banana slices for garnish.
3)Chop granola bars; set one aside for garnish.
4)Spoon bananas, granola, and yogurt, alternating layers, into 4 parfait glasses to serve sundae style. Distribute ingredients evenly.

I got the recipe and thought it was something FLB-ish and that you slinksters would appreciate. I love the idea of this community, everytime I read FLB's books I want to try the yummy sounding recipes in them. I hope you all love this as much as we do. :)

necklace of kisses
i don't know how many of you eat sashimi (like shelly in necklace of kisses), but i wanted to mention a vegeterian option...simply yuba (tofu skin) with or without rice...cooked or dried, dipped in soy sauce, with wasabi, or ponzu.
i'm not sure much food is really mentioned in necklace of kisses besides sashimi, but i am going to look through it tonight or tomorrow & will hopefully have some new recipes for you.

new recipe Piña colada shrimp babies
sauce:
1/3 cup light rum
1/3 tbsp coconut milk
1 and 1/2 cups crushed pineapples
1/2 cup coconut flakes
2 cherries diced
batter:
1 cup Coconut flakes
1/4 cup flour
1 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 lb. cleaned shrimp
1 egg, slightly beaten
oil for frying
MIX coconut, flour, salt and pepper. Dip shrimp in egg; roll in coconut mixture.
HEAT oil in large deep skillet on medium heat to 325°F.
ADD shrimp; cook 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
To make the sauce: blend the rum, coconut milk, and pineapple until it is the consistency of apple sauce, pour into a bowl and mix in the coconut flakes and the diced cherries. Serve in a dish made for dipping and organize the shrimp around the dish in a pile. add whole cherries as an edible garnish that will be tasty with the sauce.
** this sounded to me like something Weetzie might come up with. or maybe Echo's mom.

New recipe: Crab Fen Yung 1 small package of pre cooked real crab meat (or imitation for those of you who like)
a handful of fresh broccoli
a handful of fresh asparagus
one ripe and juicy lemon
1 tablespoon of "I can't believe it's not butter" (guess what, it IS)
1 handful of dry rice noodles
2 tablespoons of sour cream
some garlic powder
a sprinkle of pepper
boil the broccoli for about 3-5 minutes until still crisp but bright green in a medium sized sauce pan. sprinkle the broccoli with some garlic.
In a nonstick saute pan melt some I can't believe its not butter at low to medium low temperature. chop the dry ends of the asparagus and throw them away. the remaining asparagus should be quartered into smaller pieces so they may stay crisp but cook quickly. toss them into the saute pan and drain the crab meat, breaking it into small chunks or even strips, adding it to the mix. Drain the broccoli and gently move them to the saute pan. Stir and sprinkle with some pepper. Slice the lemon in half and squeeze the juice over the food, stir again and let sit for 1 minute in the heat.
After serving the food into a bowl take some of the rice noodles and place them all over the food, toss on some sour cream and eat.
** I wasn't sure which book really inspired this. You could say it was all of them, every time I read FLB's books I come up with recipes of my own. They don't always apply to a phrase in the book. it's just inspiration. You guys can decide which or IF the recipes even belong to any of her books. Either way I hope you guys enjoy it!

Rose and the Beast ( rose and the beast Collapse )
As for Echo I didn't mention everything. Just everything that seems important. Like that she wrote about in detail. I'm still working on developing the echo recipes. So I'll post some of those soon.

YUMMY! Hey guys. Sry I've been slacking. I've been really busy, and slightly lazy (honestly. lol). Here are a few of those free recipe cards I picked up at Wal-mart. I thought of FLB, when I saw them. Only problem is right now I can't use my scanner, so I tried taking pics of them. However the actual recipe part is showing up blurry. But here is some semi decent pics for you guys to check out. If anyones interested, I will scan (or type up) the recipes later. Just let me know your interested...Enjoy!

hey this is Lizz, Francesca Lia Block lover extroardinaire.
i've read a lot of her books... glowinthedarkstars.com has a lot of her recipes (or, the ones in her books). here's one i found from "Cherokee Bat & the Goat Guys"

2 1/2 cups water
6 to 8 fresh or 1/4 cup dried pesticide-free red hibiscus
6 sprigs fresh lavender leaves or 1 to 2 tsp. dried lavender blossoms

In a saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Simmer uncovered for two to three minutes. Meanwhile, trim the pistil and calyx (green and pollen parts) from the hibiscus flowers. Add the hibiscus and lavender to the simmering syrup. Remove from heat, cover and let stand until cool. Strain syrup into large pitcher. Add 2 to 3 cups of water and lemon juice to taste. Serve 6 to 8 over ice with lavender garnish.

Echos mom Read Echo last night and this is almost all of the food. I didn't include the food mentioned when she ate with Mark and Tina. I'm gonna work on these recipes for a bit. I also borrowed Rose and the Beast though, so I'll probably post the food mentioned in that one.
So anyway, my name's Rype. I've been reading her work since I saw it mention in Spins "girl issue," in '96 I think. Not sure. I'm 22 and I think I'm mostly Weetzie. Nice to finally find this community. I've been writing down all the foods for a few years, thinking about having an FLB party, but never have.

Hey all you Beautiful People! Hey! *waves* I am completely new to this "making and running" a community thing. I am a huge fan of Francesca Lia Block and her writings. Everytime I read them, I get so inspired to go make beautiful meals, like the ones described in her books. I figured I would create this community for everyone to share ideas for FLB inspired meals (ie: such as the ones described in Dangerous Angels, and the meals Echo's mom made). However, feel free to post anything FLB inspired. Whether it be artwork, DIY clothes, pics, whatever. I hope to see lots of yummy postings in here for us to enjoy! Much love to all my magical FLB fans out there!
