A while ago I made a set of claws for my possum paws, but ended up not installing them at the time, because I wasn't sure my plan was going to work out. The fingers are made of fleece, with three darts on each tip - one in the middle, one on each side. They have removable foam inserts, pictured below along with the first set of claws I made.**( Read more...Collapse )**My original intention was to just attach the claws with E-6000, but I got worried that it wouldn't adhere them well enough. I also wasn't sure how to handle the fact that the E-6000 might seep through the fleece and make it adhere to the foam inserts, or whatever else I put inside the finger to push against the claw while the glue dried. Maybe a different adhesive would be preferable?It seems like my other option is to make a new set of claws with bases, along the same lines as what DVC does. However, the middle dart is pretty much right where I'd be pushing the claws through. I can't really make a new hole there, but I could maybe undo the seam of the middle dart, and put them through there. But entirely removing the dart would create too large of a hole, so I suppose I'd have to find a way to sew it up around the claw. I feel like it'd be too difficult to do it from the inside with the base in the way, but maybe from the outside with a puppet stitch? Another concern I have with this method is the outline of the base of the claw being too visible underneath the fleece once I put in the foam inserts.I'm open to pretty much any solutions here, including making the claws from entirely different material (they're Primo Sculpey at present). I've been thinking about this for a bit with the problem of having to rip your hamdpaws off in crowds to fiddle with phones during suiting if you're not somewhere you can pop your top easily and I know there are touch screen gloves out there, so this was test one on making claws that can actually work like a stylus for touch screens. It is by no means perfect and it does depend a lot on the angle you're holding the claw at so far, but I'm going to keep fudging with this idea until I get something a good bit more consistent!I'm gonna do a tutorial for this soon and also offer to make them once I figure out the nitty gritty. right now it's a mess of basic sculpey claws with a core drilled out of the underside, some silver embroidery thread(but conductive thread would work way better, I was just impatient) and the twisted bunch of that hot glued into the underside with the tip free of glue. it's not hard per say, just a little fiddly at the moment, and the tread only comes in so many colors. I've got a few other things I want to try as well to see if there's better more reliable methods. as for an I phone it should work? I can test it out on one tomorrow. OH one big thing is that those threads coming out the back of the claw have to make good contact with your skin inside.Alternately, if the paws dont have claws, following a similar method to making your own touchscreen gloves (sewing a small knot into the pad of a finger) would also work, but fur may get in the way if it's too long. I was thinking vinyl, but I don't know what type to get, or where the best place to get it would be, or if it's even a good idea or if it'll fall apart on me.As for making them, I'm probably just gonna glue some foam onto my fingers on a glove and sew the fabric over that. Unless anyone has a better method.Tags:claws, materials, paws I'm making monster-sized claws for the fursuit I'm working on. Imagine a saber tooth, but over a foot long. I'm also making claws for the feet, basically a sculpted claw 'cap' that goes over a shoe, like the hooves some people have made.My question is for people who have worked with flexible foam - how plausible would it be to cast these claws in foam? Will it be too heavy for foot-long claws, about three claws per hand? I have absolutely no problem sacrificing comfort for character integrity, but there's a limit, haha. Can I be a bit cheap with molds and use only plaster? I'm literally just making 6 claws and two foot caps - no need to save these molds or the original sculpts. Any advice here is much appreciated, as I've only cast with urethane resin and I'd strongly prefer not to use that.If you think foam is a good material for these claws, what kind should I buy? I have checked Smooth-On's website and they offer so many types, I'm not sure what to go for. It needs to hold up over time, even though I won't be wearing the costume that heavily. I'm also totally fine with going with another company. I just have no experience with this material and figured I would see if any experts could weigh in. Thank you in advance!Tags:casting, claws, foam I finished one of the Gashy's paw and I found a bit bad surprise after I finished it. Getting INTO the paw is quite annoying, like the fingers part. They are so tightly pushed together with the polyfilled padding and I literally felt I did something wrong and this should be much more comfy to put on hand. Any tips what should be done to avoid the fingers getting so pushed together with the filling? My fingers get lost in the paw, especially last 2 fingers. I try a new hand with a different technique. I bough such gloves called Tamrex winter gloves:They have latex fingers on the top and these are very comfy to put on hand and as the fingers are a bit tight, I hope this wont push the damn fingers into labyrinth. Its odd to find so little info about paws padding in fursuit stuff. There's barely any info, most are with fingers but for the whole arm and even sleeve. I have been trying to make a fursuit for my friend and there are a special kind of paws I want to make for him. This is a ref how his character looks like This is his head so far, I apologise if there are some mistakes. I honestly have hard time with symmetry because I can't see 3d (Im blind from 1 eye) and I do my best to do it . The horn is temporaly on the middle of the head xD And now the paw topic. I have no idea how it should be done.I "KINDA" might know how but so far it did not come out right. I think it's done, that there is a glove with fingers and then a huge "bag" over it and I fill it or use foam to shape the thing. I have not seen anybody make tutorial of such paws. Most are with normal paws what have no padding around the whole arm. Any tips how to get the desired shape of the hands?This way is my paw atm: I don't like that foam thing really. I first hoped that I can shape the curve with foam and I can get the desired shape with carving but the hand was hard to move :D: . So I contacted a local store and asked the owner to see if they have any sulphur free clay. She said that sulphur is bad for skin and their clay is non toxic, so she is thinking that their clay is sulphur free. My new character has a large mane around her neck that goes from the top of the neck down to the chest. How would I make the neck of this suit? I'm thinking to attach half the mane to the head to make the neck and then sew the rest where it's is going to be. Or making the whole mane attached to the head? Maybe makeing it out of foam? Over a year ago I heard about making claws that could work as a stylus on a touch screen phone like an android or an iphone. I know its some sort of wire you can put in the claws but what is it and how can you make it into the claws is my question ? I'd only want it in three of the claws on each hand. Me and my friend are making a pair of paws and I wanted to be able to use my phone while wearing them since I plan to give them a bit more dexterity than regulare fursuit paws. Any advice ? I also want to go off of a more regular glove pattern vs sandwhiching the two peices togther. The paws will also be webbed with the base made out of fleece or something similar since they are dragon claws/paws. I have used both Smooth-Cast 300 and Color-Pro Resin with the proper coloring agents but have gotten a problem each time. For some reason the colors get a swirl effect when it should be all the same color.Here are some examples:The one with the red is Smooth-Cast 300 while the others are from the Color-Pro. The first time I used the Color-Pro resin they did not swirl at all.I mixed the Part B resin before mixing it with Part A as instructed. I ordered from DVC almost two weeks ago and saw that they were down a person until after Christmas and figured that I could wait because they seemed bogged down as it was with so many orders and such.Well today, they posted a whole slew of pre-made pieces, several of them are what was on my order to begin with so I figured that I would be getting my items soon. I commented on one of the submissions and asked if I would get my order before the pre-mades were shipped out and they pretty much told me no. So those who buy today are getting their stuff before me who's been waiting? And the items are right there! They could just ship those out to those who have been waiting for weeks but instead, they would rather make as much money as possible while loosing this repeat buyer who would have used them for all of my commissions who wanted DVC pieces on their suits made by me. It seems very backwards that once they have your money, you're on the back burner and they just want to get as many people to buy as possible no matter how long you've been waiting.
