The engagement of UNESCO with indigenous peoples and their heritage provides insights into global... more The engagement of UNESCO with indigenous peoples and their heritage provides insights into global norms that affect collective cultural rights, religion, and education of indigenous peoples. It also enables insights into structural and organizational challenges and opportunities indigenous peoples experience in the current world. Against this background, this paper analyzes exemplary UNESCO standard-setting documents that explicitly approach indigenous peoples. In doing so, the paper asks first, how these documents situate indigenous peoples in the context of cultural/religious diversity and education. Second, we reconstruct how UNESCO addresses the holistic education of indigenous peoples, and how does it relate to the notion of the holistic approach itself. Methodologically, the paper applies qualitative content analysis with close reading and situates UNESCO’s developments in the theoretical framework of the study of religion. From this perspective, the results address ambiguities around the term “religion”, when concentrated to ritual, and the possibility of convergences between universalist and holistic knowledge.

Seit 2009 und der Publikation „Human Rights Education in Schools of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice“ sind sie jedoch auch gemeinsam im globalen Bildungssegment aktiv. What role will religion play in school education in the future? UNESCO, OSCE/ODIHR and the Counci... more What role will religion play in school education in the future? UNESCO, OSCE/ODIHR and the Council of Europe each provide their own answers. However, since 2009 and the publication "Human Rights Education in Schools of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice," they have also been active together in the global education context. Based on the fact that international stakeholders are engaged in a global discourse and on the fact that UNESCO has the longest tradition of dealing with religion, this paper qualitatively and quantitatively analyzes UNESCO's work with regard to religion in the school education segment and in a diachronic perspective. The examination of selected normative documents, relevant educational projects and related manuals provides answers to the questions with which concepts of religion and education and with which didactic approaches UNESCO meets the challenges of the global world.

n this paper, we discuss the challenges of developing secular framework in relation to religion i... more n this paper, we discuss the challenges of developing secular framework in relation to religion in Kyrgyzstan, the first Central Asian republic where democratic institutions were established after the collapse of the Soviet Union and which has been strongly challenged in maintaining its democratic achievements during the Tulip Revolution and other revolts in 2010 and 2020. The question we aim to answer is how processes of securitization shape the relationship between state institutions and religious organizations, knowing that Kyrgyzstan is still influenced both by the Soviet understanding of secularism and by models of secularity and governance from countries and societies with different histories and conditions of development. We look at different phases of the relationship between state and religion starting with the regime change and the establishment of a democratic state. Secondly, the establishing of a legal framework for state policy on religious organizations. Thirdly, the time of the adoption of measures to protect the interests of all citizens, believers and non-believers, and the beginning of the process of active influence of state policy on the situation in the religious sphere. And finally, the new (mis)understanding of the relations between the state and religion, both on the side of the state and religious organizations. Our theoretical point of departure is the concept of securitization, and from there on we take a discursive approach focusing on the different actors in this arena, such as state institutions and the various religious organizations and groups.

This paper analyses the context, emergence, organisation and curriculum of the school subject kno... more This paper analyses the context, emergence, organisation and curriculum of the school subject known as 'Culture of Religions' (Kultura religija), which is given as an example of good practice in the Toledo Guiding Principles of the OSCE. It was designed, piloted and to a certain extent introduced in state schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina by a collaboration of international organisations and institutions, together with representatives from various local organisations. This paper addresses the challenges and opportunities that render this school subject not only highly relevant but also a controversial issue of education policy today.
This essay analyses the religious education textbooks of the Islamic Religious Community and thei... more This essay analyses the religious education textbooks of the Islamic Religious Community and their depiction of peace and violence in the post-conflict Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). For this purpose, firstly the 'religious field'of BiH will be outlined in order to identify and locate the individuals and institutions whose responsibilities include the content matter and production of religious education textbooks.The study inquires as to whether there might be a correlation between the textbook contents used by this community and the latter's position within the 'religious field' of BiH. Secondly, it analyses the textbooks based on the 'HabitusAnalysis' approach, with which both textbook contents and the strategies employed by diverse entities within a post-conflict situation can be reconstructed. Finally it outlines the religious habitus that the textbooks advocate for the future.

Gibt es eine Relation zwischen der sozialen Position der Schulbuchproduzenten im religiösen Feld ... more Gibt es eine Relation zwischen der sozialen Position der Schulbuchproduzenten im religiösen Feld und den Schulbuchinhalten, die diese verantworten? Dieser Frage wird am Beispiel Bosnien-Herzegowinas nachgegangen. Um sie beantworten zu können, wird erstens das religiöse Feld präsentiert, um diejenigen Akteure im Feld positionieren zu können, die für die Inhalte der Religionsbücher und für deren Produktion zuständig sind. Zweitens werden die ausgewählten Schulbücher analysiert (hier exemplarisch die muslimischen)-angelehnt an die von Heinrich Wilhelm Schäfer entwickelte praxeologische Habitus-Analysis. Dabei werden die Wahrnehmung und die Strategien des gewählten Akteurs rekonstruiert, bezogen auf gesellschaftlich relevante Aussagen zum Krieg und zum Frieden. Gefragt wird danach, welchen Habitus die Schulbücher für die Zukunft implizieren. 1

In this chapter, the educational approaches to religion in public schools of Bosnia and Herzegovi... more In this chapter, the educational approaches to religion in public schools of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the post-war time have been analyzed. For the first time in history, relevant actors are both religious and secular: the Islamic Community, the Catholic Church, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the international players such as OHR and OSCE. Following, the paper analyses socio-political situation and legal framework on religion in public education. This is broadened by the analysis of different normative statements and new concepts of both teaching in religion and teaching about religion with which the actors intend to shape the education of the new state. In the next step, the analysis of the different rationale of these concepts shows how various actors make their concepts publicly plausible, and what kind of criticism they have been exposed to. Finally, the third level of analysis concerns the concrete public action in the form of curricula and textbooks. Although all actors share the opinion that religion in public schools is a sign of a progress, the educational concepts appropriate to the multi-religious space of Bosnia and Herzegovina - be they religious or secular - are still pending.

Additionally it explores two perspectives: how Southeast Europe is portrayed in school textbooks from Western, Central and Southern Europe, and focuses on findings from analyses of history textbooks from South-East Europe; investigating which narratives are contained within those books and attempting to ascertain which epistemological interests dominate the analyses.

Ausgehend vom Reformationsjubiläum im Jahr 2017 und der damit verknüpften Relevanz des religiösen... more Ausgehend vom Reformationsjubiläum im Jahr 2017 und der damit verknüpften Relevanz des religiösen und gesellschaftlichen Wandels, geht dieser Band auf die Darstellung der Reformation in Schulbüchern der Schweiz, Deutschlands, Großbritanniens und der drei Länder Südosteuropas Bosnien und Herzegowina, Serbien und Nordmazedonien ein. Bei der Analyse werden Geschichts- und Religionsbücher berücksichtigt und auf die tragenden Muster und Narrative hin untersucht. Die Resultate zeigen, dass die Reformation in den Schulbüchern grundsätzlich einen hohen Stellenwert hat. Allerdings ist das Übersetzungspotential des soziopolitischen und religiösen Erbes in die heutige Zeit und das Lehrpotential im Hinblick auf die (inner)religiöse und weltanschauliche Dynamiken noch lange nicht erschöpft.
Starting from the Reformation anniversary in 2017 and the relevance of religious and social change, this volume looks at the representation of the Reformation in textbooks of Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain and the three countries of Southeastern Europe (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Northern Macedonia). Textbooks for history teaching and for religious education are analysed and examined for the prevailing patterns and narratives. The results show that the Reformation ranks high in textbooks as a historical event. However, the translation potential of the socio-political and religious heritage into the present time and the teaching potential with regard to (intra)religious and ideological dynamics is far from being exhausted.

Welche Rolle spielt Religion bei der Modernisierung der öffentlichen Bildung? Welche Rolle spiele... more Welche Rolle spielt Religion bei der Modernisierung der öffentlichen Bildung? Welche Rolle spielen dabei die internationalen Organisationen? Im Nachkriegsland Bosnien und Herzegowina sind Bildungsakteure religiös und säkular, lokal und international. Deren Wirken ist eingebettet in den komplexen rechtlichen, sozio-politischen und soziokulturellen Kontext, der zusammen mit den Konzepten der schulischen Religionsvermittlung analysiert werden. Es folgt eine Untersuchung unterschiedlicher Legitimierung dieser Modelle, wie auch des öffentlichen Handelns, die in Form von Lehrmitteln deutlich wird. Anhand dieser Analyseschritte konnten unterschiedliche Strategien sowohl der lokalen als auch der internationalen Akteure in Hinblick auf Bildung herausgearbeitet werden.
What role does religion play in the modernization of public education? What is the role of international organizations? In the post-war country of Bosnia and Herzegovina, educational stakeholders are religious and secular, local and international. Their activities are embedded in the complex legal, socio-political and socio-cultural context, which are analyzed together with the concepts of religious education in public schools. This is followed by an examination of different legitimations of education models, as well as of public agency, which becomes evident in teaching materials. Based on these analytical steps, different strategies of both local and international actors with regard to education could be elaborated.

In diesem Buch wird anhand religionswissenschaftlicher Zugänge die gnostisch-dualistische Interpr... more In diesem Buch wird anhand religionswissenschaftlicher Zugänge die gnostisch-dualistische Interpretation zur bosnischen Kirche dargestellt. Von den Autoren dieser Interpretation wurde sie als eine in die Kette der mittelalterlichen «Häresien» eingebettete Kirche verstanden, die zwischen dem 12. und 15. Jahrhundert bestand. Ihre Anhänger, die krstjani, sollen mit den Bogumilen, den Patarenern und den Katharern verwandt gewesen sein. Ihre Spuren verlieren sich mit der Eroberung Bosniens durch das Osmanische Reich im 15. Jahrhundert. Zeugnisse der bosnischen Kirche sehen manche Autoren in mittelalterlichen Grabsteinen, die über ganz Bosnien verstreut sind. Zu diesem Thema ist im Laufe der Zeit im südslawischen Sprachraum eine Fülle an Material zusammengetragen worden, das hier erstmals in den geschichtlichen, vergleichenden, archäologischen und ethnologischen Zugang eingeordnet wird.
In this book the Gnostic-dualistic interpretation of the Bosnian Church is presented on the basis of scientific approaches to religion. The authors of this interpretation understood it as a church embedded in the chain of medieval "heresies", which existed between the 12th and 15th centuries. Its adherents, the krstjani, were said to be related to the Bogumils, the Patarenes and the Cathars. Their traces are lost with the conquest of Bosnia by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Evidence of the Bosnian church is seen by some authors in medieval gravestones scattered throughout Bosnia. A wealth of material has been collected on this subject over time in the South Slavic language area, and this is the first time that it has been placed in the historical, comparative, archaeological, and ethnological approach.

In seiner Arbeit wurde Tworuschka nicht nur von der Relevanz der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung von Religion, sondern auch von der gesellschaftlichen und verschiedener Religionen geleitet, wie auch von der Bedeutung des religionswissenschaftlichen Wissens in die Praxis. In seiner am Menschen orientierten, kontextuellen Wissenschaft plädiert er auch für ein neues Bildungsideal.
