The importance of adhering to basic sanitary standards and having access to safe drinking water c... more The importance of adhering to basic sanitary standards and having access to safe drinking water cannot be overstated for individuals. Despite being essential for human survival, a significant portion of the global population still lacks convenient access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the definitions of key terms related to this subject in order to fully comprehend the issue at hand. The recent outbreak of the highly contagious and deadly COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the world. Although the situation has somewhat improved, there have been a significant number of deaths, resulting in a decrease in the global population. To better understand this phenomenon, various concepts such as water, sanitation, health, development, COVID-19, and accessibility are currently being closely examined. Formerly known as SARS-CoV-the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus has caused widespread devastation and disruption worldwide. The virus responsible for Covid-19 is a novel coronavirus that was initially identified in Wuhan City and was previously referred to as 2019-nCoV. In this context, "water" is the clear, odorless, and colorless substance that comprises rain, lakes, rivers, and seas. It is defined as the essential fluid necessary for the survival of all living organisms. The term "sanitation" encompasses various conditions that impact public health, particularly the proper disposal of sewage. Conversely, being in good health implies the absence of illness or injury. Access to water not only reduces health risks but also promotes the economic empowerment of women and girls, enabling them to lead healthier lives.

The research employed a documentary analysis approach to evaluate several key aspects, including the accessibility of basic sanitation and safe drinking water for Nigerians, the challenges faced by Nigeria in combating COVID-19, the connection between COVID-19, water, and sanitation, as well as the scarcity of water and sanitation as a risk factor for the reoccurrence of the virus. Despite the fact that COVID-19 is currently less severe globally and particularly in Nigeria, it is crucial to continue taking precautions to prevent the resurgence of this deadly disease. One of the fundamental measures during the pandemic was ensuring unrestricted access to water and sanitation, which involved regular hand washing with soap and strict adherence to sanitary regulations and hygienic practices. Given that inadequate water and sanitation contribute to the risk of COVID-19 transmission, it is imperative to address this issue by providing sufficient water and basic sanitation facilities for the Nigerian population, thereby obstructing the potential future reoccurrence of the virus.

Participants were 400 undergraduates selected through multi-stage sampling technique, from two purposively selected tertiary institutions: Lagos State University and Ekiti State University. Questionnaire was the main instrument employed for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicated that male students' academic ambition for proper education was PhD qualification and lower degree for their intended wife. Females expressed an ambition for a first degree before walking down the aisle lane of marriage and PhD education for their intended husbands. Furthermore, findings revealed that cultural beliefs no longer served as obstruction to female's more superior educational attainment. Most of the female students preferred to get married even if they had to go back to schools after the possession of first degree qualification. The study concluded that unproductive cultural practices that inhibited females in obtaining higher education as their male counterparts needs to be interrogated and wished away to enable the female be at par with their male counterparts.

Money ritual for quick wealth in Nigeria traditionally refers to an untenable situation whereby someone is intentionally murdered for ritual purposes. This is to enable them to typically acquire swift wealth, considerable power, self-protection, and enduring fame. Regrettably, observable shreds of evidence about the child sexual molestation for money-makings remain ambiguous. It has not been conveying the seriousness it deserves but rather, has been deliberately ignored because of cultural practices and belief systems within different socio-cultural societies in Nigeria. As a result, victims of sexual abuse are not courageous to report their experiences. This is because they are afraid of stigmatization and the threat of abuser on their consciousness. It is against this background that this paper argues that the supposed correlates of the child sexual assault for money ritual in Nigeria constitute a setback for national sustainable development. Therefore, the inclination towards sexual abuse of minors must be directly addressed to safeguard the life of children from the devastating effects.

Gender has both psychological and cultural implications, the corresponding terms for gender and sex are different: while the corresponding terms for gender are masculine and feminine, that of sex is male and female. The differences between men and women have been understood to be the basis for inequality in the society. What are these differences? The fact remains that there are differences between male and female in terms of their biological make ups, however, the differences have always been the basis for justifying inequality between male and female. The physiological differences have been the basis for biological school of thought in analyzing the differences. However, from the cultural school of thought, culture is responsible for the differences that exist between male and female. Culture is an entire way of life that exists in a particular society. It is learned and shared by members of a society. It is a learned socially transmitted behavior; it is all about norms, values, and customs that people share with one another. Hence, culture is a way of life of its members, the collection of ideas and habits which they leam, share and transmit from generation to generation. Culture is everything that people create - values, norms, and goals. Culture develops as people interact with one another over time. Culture is external to individuals in the sense that they leam about it, however, it is also internal as it is made part of human being and bestows meaning on their lives.Culture is understood to be promoting gender inequality in society as it is transmitted from one generation to the other. By making sense of the causes of gender inequality, one cannot but seek explanation in the culture of the human society. Therefore, the study is motivated by the persistence of gender inequality in our society especially in Ekiti State despite the various moves by different scholars in addressing gender inequality in society. For this reason, the study is set out to examine the influence of culture on gender inequality in Ekiti State. It goes further to draw a relationship between culture, gender inequality, women empowerment and development. This is understandable in that culture models a people and determines to some extent, its behavioral orientation. Hence, it is imperative therefore to understand gender inequality from the cultural perspective and subsequently its effect on women empowerment and development. Gender inequality is affecting every institution in society be it education, economic, social, health, family, religion system to mention a few.Culture is a social value that is transmitted from people to people. It is the ideas, beliefs and practices of people. It is a prototype of life of a given society. Aina (1998) in "Nigeria Women Today" defined culture as the shared ideas, norms, values and beliefs of people. Culture is thus a behavior that is learned and transmitted from one generation to the other deliberately and instinctively over a period of time. Gender inequality is thus culturally transmitted from generation to generation; the ideology of gender inequality is culturally constructed. The belief about men and women in our society differs, while men are culturally believed to be the go-getter, women are recognized as home managers who give the men emotional support and care for children in the home, men thus becoming the breadwinner of the family.Culture dictates many of the societal arrangements and the same is applicable to gender role ideologies. Society makes a distinction between the roles perform by men and women and ranks the roles hierarchically. The role of men has always been an advantage for them because it enables them to move out of the private sphere to the public world for employment opportunities. …

Journal of Research in Gender Studies, Jul 1, 2014

However, the questions that agitate the mind are: can the rights of women be realistic in a society that is patriarchal in character like Nigeria? To what extent can women exercise their human rights without constraint? Are women themselves on familiar terms with their rights? When their rights are abused what steps should be taken? What are the consequences for the inability of women to exercise their rights? What effect is this inability having on the dignity of women and development? These are some questions that readily come to mind and thus serving as motivating factors for exploring the above research work. Right is defined by Isiramen (2002) as power, privilege or immunity, guaranteed under a constitution, status or decisional laws or claimed as a respect for long usage. Furthermore, he opined that respect for rights is perceived as a matter of fair dealing in moral vocabulary. Right can be affirmed, requested or appeal for, the obligations that rights imposed are expected to be performed while nonperformance can lead to feeling of resentment, bittemess and dissatisfaction.Rights on the other hand can denote various meanings depending on the circumstances, we can say that rights is an act that is morally justified and correct, we can again say the right to speak, right to freedom, right to vote, right to education, right to have access to basic needs in society, right to acquire property and so many others. We can go further to define women's rights as rights that establish the same socio-economic, and political status for women as for men. Women rights guarantee that women will not face discrimination on the basis of their sex. Patriarchy on the other hand is a fundamental construction of domination whereby men have basic and concrete interests in controlling, using, subjugating and oppressing women (Ritzer, 1988).Having defined some concepts in relation to the topic, the next step is to make sense of the questions raised above while some will come to focus through interaction with respondents at the discussion. What are these rights of women and what impact do they have on the dignity of women in general and in Nigeria and Ekiti State in particular? Knowing the rights of women will enable us to discover if the dignity of women is respected within the stipulated frame of women's rights especially in the constitution of Nigeria. In the earlier period women in most societies were denied some of the cultural, legal, economic, education, social and political rights that are usually enjoyed by men. Even though women have gained significant legal rights today than before and the general conception is that women are partially inclusive in the cultural, political, economic, and social life of the society nevertheless, it has not earn women adequate level of equality with men. In other words, women's rights are being infringed upon in Nigerian society. In 1981, the United Nations reaffirmed its faith in the fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women. It is proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that human beings are free and equal in dignity and rights and that everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth therein, without distinction of any kind, including distinction based on sex. It is further stated that discrimination against women violates the principles of equality of rights and respect for human dignity. It serves as an obstacle to the participation of women, on equal terms with men, in political, social, economic, and cultural life of their countries. There is no doubt Nigeria has embraced these fundamental human rights in its constitution. Hence this brings forth the discussion to considering Nigerian Constitution as regard to women rights. In the Nigerian constitution from 1999 it is stated in chapter 4 sections 33-45 that every Nigerian has the following fundamental rights: the right to life, to dignity of human person, the right to personal liberty, the right to freedom of speech, freedom from discrimination, the right against compulsory acquisition of property without compensation. …

This paper identifies the effect of maternal and health care practices on under-five survival in Nigeria. This study considers the risk of dying for 0-60 months children with identification of the time period of survival to death across the six geopolitical regions in Nigeria. The study uses data from the Demographic and Health Survey 2018 being the latest in Nigeria to explain the underlying factors associated with under-five mortality. The Kaplan Meier analysis and the Cox proportional regression were used to estimate the time between the period of birth and the event of death. Findings revealed that up to 71% of death in under-five children occurred between 0 and 12 months with a decrease in risk found as age increase after 24 months. All death occurred in children with no intake of any vaccination, 69% in children not delivered at government or private health centres, and 74% in rural communities, Result of the Cox proportional hazard regression indicates that mother's age 15-30, education, poor nutrition and unchecked breastfeeding practices after birth increases the hazard of child mortality.

Women have somewhat experienced gender opportunity restrictions and ceiling across societies down the ages. What is problematic is the consistency and persistence of the imbalance in Nigeria even when change is constant and reverberating around the globe. A survey of selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria revealed that there is gender imbalance in the constitution of the faculty staff. The men clearly outnumber the women. The paper proffers that for rapid societal development and greater sense of belonging, the discrimination against women should stop, especially in the academia who uphold the citadel of learning and that gender sensitivity in appointments should be put at the front burner.

Culture is an entire...
