This paper presents a collaboration on machine translation (MT) between the Global Databases Serv... more This paper presents a collaboration on machine translation (MT) between the Global Databases Service (GDS) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Documentation Division (DD) of the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ). The collaboration started in November 2011 after informal conversations held during the ASLIB Conference. In the context of this collaboration, DD provided 11 years of human translations in bitext format (around 60,000 bitexts for the first language combination, English-Spanish, and slightly more for English-Arabic, English-Chinese, English-French and EnglishRussian). Using these bitexts, WIPO developers trained its existing machine translation tool, called TAPTA, which was developed using Moses technology and adapted for the translation of patent abstracts. Then, WIPO developers installed the resulting systems in cloud servers procured by the United Nations (UN) and delivered a one-week training session to our IT staff to teach them how to maint...
Described is a large-scale implementa-tion of a Moses-based machine transla-tion system in the Un... more Described is a large-scale implementa-tion of a Moses-based machine transla-tion system in the United Nations aiming at accelerating the work of translators. The system (called TAPTA4UN) has been trained on extensive parallel corpora in 6 languages. Both automatic and hu-man evaluations are provided. The sys-tem is now used in production by profes-sional translators. The technical chal-lenges of scalability and the final evalua-tion by users are also described.
This paper presents a machine translation prototype developed with the United Nations (UN) corpus... more This paper presents a machine translation prototype developed with the United Nations (UN) corpus for automatic translation of UN documents from English to Spanish. The tool is based on open source Moses technology and has been developed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The two organizations pooled resources to create a model trained on an extensive corpus of manually translated UN documents. The performance of the SMT system as a translation assistant was shown to be very satisfactory (using both automatic and human evaluation). The use of the system in production within UN is now under discussion
