The Steinhauser Hütte in Witten is a particularly suitable case study to illustrate the manifold ... more The Steinhauser Hütte in Witten is a particularly suitable case study to illustrate the manifold problems associated with the topic of the "Archaeology of Modernity". The most difficult and at the same time the most decisive task of an archaeology of modernity is the determination of the value of a certain monument. Although Westphalian archaeology was able to draw on the expertise of the LWL industrial museums in this matter, some reactions from experts reveal that the discourse on the Archaeology of modernity should not lose sight of the reality of everyday life in the preservation of archaeological monuments. Zusammenfassung Die Steinhauser Hütte in Witten ist als Fallbeispiel besonders geeignet, die vielfältigen Problemfelder rund um das Thema "Archäologie der Moderne" zu veranschaulichen. Deren schwierigste und zugleich entscheidendste Aufgabe ist die Bestimmung des Denkmalwertes. Wiewohl die westfälische Archäologie in dieser Frage auf die Kompetenz der LWL-Industriemuseen zurückgreifen konnte, offenbaren manche Reaktionen aus Fachkreisen, dass der Diskurs zur "Archäologie der Moderne" die Realität des bodendenkmalpflegerischen Alltags nicht aus den Augen verlieren sollte.

Part of the LWL-Industriemuseum/Westphalian State Museum of Industrial Heritage, the Henrichshutte’s museal practice always aimed at people’s life and work experience rather than aspects of pure technology. Taking the example of Henrichshutte, this article describes several aspects of work with oral history within the LWL-Industriemuseum as a whole, from exhibition concepts to volunteer work, and discusses the development towards an archive of work in the industrial age, covering six branches and around 1,600 interviews. ----- Bibliographie: Schmidt-Rutsch, Olaf: Old Tales and New Stories.
