Primary data was obtained through a questionnaire. 252 questionnaires were self-administered by the researchers to the subscribers of the four major GSM providers in Lagos State. 198 of the questionnaires were returned, properly filled. The questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS 17. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to establish the relationship between the independent and dependent constructs of the research. The findings revealed that service quality, customer satisfaction, and corporate image are important determinants of customer satisfaction and loyalty in the Nigeria's GSM market. The fourth factor, price/tariff is found not to be a determinant of customer satisfaction and loyalty in market. A conclusion was drawn to the effect that since factors influencing customer loyalty have been established, GSM companies should note these and emphasize them in t...

In addition to the review of the literature, a survey was also undertaken, involving 421 shoppers in the three outlets of Shoprite in Lagos metropolis, selected by a systematic sampling technique. Based on a dataset from the 421 respondents, the paper conducted a statistical analysis to detect the changes in the consumption patterns of the shoppers due to the current economic crisis in the country. Results of the correlation analysis showed that the current economic crisis in the country has significantly affected consumption patterns of majority of the respondents. The crisis has led a large number of respondents to substantially reduce consumption of luxury products and a simple majority to slightly reduce consumption of necessities. It was concluded that the recession has affect...

In particular, the rise of vehicles in Nigeria from about 150, 000 in 1983 to about 9 million in 2012, has exerted pressure on gasoline consumption. Records showed that Lagos State, the commercial and industrial hub of the country, has the highest level of motorisation, accounting for about 25 per cent of the volume of gasoline consumed in the country. The main objective of this paper was to examine the role of public transport (PT) in curbing the rising gasoline consumption in the state. Review of the literature indicated that the State Government is promoting the use of PT through the development of multi-modal PT system; energy efficiency of PT is greater than that of automobile; ridership of PT by motorists removes a large number of personal cars ...

This is referred to as end of life care in the literature. In some countries, the laws expressly make provisions for the end of life care. In Nigeria, though these provisions are not expressed, they are implied in the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, and can therefore, justify the need for end of life care. The important objective of this paper is to examine the provisions of Section 34(1) of the Constitution that deals with the dignity of a person and Section 38(1) that deals with the freedom of religion and thoughts in relation to end of life care. A review of the extant literature on the legal framework and end of life care was undertaken. The review indicates that every human being deserves to be treated with dignity irrespective of their health conditions as failure to do this will amount to human degradation. It further reveals that the concept of dignity along side equality are the most important elements of end of life care. Section 34(1) of the 1999 constitution provides that every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person. Similarly, the paper shows that dying persons with strange religious convictions are legally entitled to hold on tenaciously to those beliefs and health workers are obliged to respect those beliefs in carrying out the end of life care. Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution provides that every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief. It is concluded that though the Nigerian laws do not expressly provide for the right of the dying persons, it can be deduced that the provisions of the laws allow a lee way for the end of life care of a dying person.

The high consumption of petrol (gasoline) inNigeria could be due to low petrol prices asaresult of subsidization of the product and tax-free product. The paper investigated the effect of petroleum subsidy removal and imposition of petrol tax on petrol consumption in the transport sector of Lagos State. Data were obtained from a sample of 1, 565 respondents in 70 housing estates in six local governments of the state using a multi-stage sampling technique. Results of the correlation analysis indicated that the two variables, subsidy removal and petrol tax (used to measure a high pump price tendency) are significant in reducing petrol consumption in the state. Therefore, both subsidy removal and petrol tax are effective policy options in reducing the current high petrol consumption in Nigeria. The policy implications of these findings to environmental and economic policy-makers in the country are highlighted.

The reason for this is that most firms operate in a stiff competitive business environment, especially in the manufacturing industry. This study is aimed therefore to find out how manufacturing firms can make use of a diversification strategy to increase their market share. This study made used of a survey design; the questionnaire was the research instrument used. ANOVA and correlation were used as statistical tools of analysis. The findings revealed that diversification has a positive impact on manufacturing firm market share and market position. The study concluded that diversification enables firms to expand their operations by adding markets and products to existing businesses. The study then recommended the use of diversification as a strategy for firms that intend to increase their market share.

Review of literature showed that high costs of production, inordinate textile importation from Asia and prevalent use of obsolete technology in the industry considerably undermine the competitiveness of Nigeria's textiles in the regional market. It is concluded that Nigeria's textiles are not competitive in the regional market because of these ingrained problems. Based on this conclusion, it is recommended that patriotic and concerted efforts be made by the Buhari Administration to: upgrade and expand the country's infrastructure to increase productivity, quality and reduce production costs of textile products; and attract leading Asian textile firms to the Free Trade Areas (FTAs) in the country to encourage export production and reverse the excessive importation of textiles.

Among many benefits of relational approach to marketing is development of customer loyalty. The objective of the study therefore was to empirically investigate the effect of relationship marketing on customer loyalty in Nigeria's banks. Data were collected from a cross-section of customers (consisting of 672 sample) of four leading banks (United Bank for Africa, First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank and Zenith Bank in Nigeria.. The data were analyzed through SPSS Version 17.0, using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The findings revealed that all the four measures of relationship marketing (service quality, trust, complaint handling and customer satisfaction) significantly positively correlated with customer loyalty. This means that they all have significant effect on customer loyalty in Nigerian banks. It was concluded that RM by banks pays off because it has effect on customer loyalty. Based on this conclusion, it was recommended that all banks in the country should develop and maintain a long-term relationship with their customers.
The chaotic, unreliable and uncoordinated public transport (PT) system in Lagos and other states ... more The chaotic, unreliable and uncoordinated public transport (PT) system in Lagos and other states in Nigeria has made ownership of personal vehicles attractive to a growing number of people. This has resulted in many motorists preferring to make trips in a personal, rather than in a public mode. Unfortunately, heavy dependence on a private mode of transportation imposes externalities (adverse effects) on the people and the environment. This paper investigated whether motorists' decision to ride on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is related to their quest to reduce these adverse effects in Lagos metropolis. We collected data through questionnaire and observation. Data were obtained from a valid sample of 926 drivers-turned riders along the new Ikorodu-CMS corridors. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data. Observation was used to collect data that either could not be collected by survey or could be biased by it. The survey results showed that ridership of BRT by motorists in the Lagos metropolis can be predicted by their desire to reduce transport externalities such as traffic congestion, gasoline consumption, emissions and health hazards. The most profound of the observation results is the significant reduction in traffic congestion observed along Mile 12-Ikorodu road, hitherto notorious for severe traffic congestion. It was concluded that as more motorists become more environmentally responsible, they will choose to ride in BRT in the metropolis.

The interface has been described as entrepreneurial marketing (EM) and it refers to, in this paper, as the marketing activities of new entrepreneurial firms. Discussing the five interface areas of EM-innovativeness, proactiveness, calculated risk-taking, opportunity-driven and resource leveraging-the paper argued that EM enables entrepreneurial firms to anticipate customer needs and competitors' actions in the marketplace and exploit the opportunities in the marketplace innovatively, proactively and under condition of uncertainty (entrepreneurial orientatikn). It was concluded that adopting both marketing and entrepreneurial orientation to the management of entrepreneurial firms is beneficial to both start-up and growing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria.
Mobile number portability (MNP) was introduced by the National Communication Commission (NCC) on ... more Mobile number portability (MNP) was introduced by the National Communication Commission (NCC) on April 22nd, 2013 to enable interested GSM subscribers to migrate from their existing networks, while retaining their numbers. Due to the benefits of this innovative technology, Nigerian subscribers are expected to be excited about the innovation and freely migrate from one network to another. However, up to date, only few subscribers have ported, suggesting a negative attitude. Using the three components of attitude, the paper sought to determine whether intention to port (conative) was related to subscribers' perception (cognitive) about and subscribers' feelings (affective) towards MNP. In addition to the review of the literature, primary data were collected from a valid sample of 808 respondents of HND students of Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo Campus. Data were analysed through Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and the results supported the two hypotheses, i.e. students' perception about and feelings towards MNP are significantly related to their intention. However, the relationship between the two independent variables (cognitive and affective) and dependent variable, behavioural intention is weak, suggesting that perception about and feelings towards MNP are not strong predictors of intention to port among the students of Lagos State Polytechnic. The limitations and implications of the paper were also discussed.

Therefore, effective running of any economy depends on the efficient and sustainable supply of these products. In particular, premium motor spirit (PMS) is the most important energy source to power vehicles. Disruption in supply of this critical resource in Nigeria has been a recurring problem as its distribution is beset with multitude of problems. This paper investigated the effects of four of these problems on the supply and scarcity of PMS in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja and environs. In addition to the review of related literature, primary data was obtained from a valid sample of 171 respondents in petrol stations in the study area. The analysis of data was undertaken through Pearson Product Moment Correlations. The analysis showed that all the independent variables (low refining output, inadequate pipeline infrastructure, pipelines vandalism and rupture and bridging of petrol through road transportation) significantly affect PMS supply and cause scarcity of the product in the FCT and environs. Inadequate pipeline infrastructure has the greatest impact on PMS supply. Based on these findings, we concluded that regular supply of PMS in the FCT and environs is plagued by the four problems investigated in this paper. A number of policy implications and recommendations of the findings of the paper were highlighted, and future research direction was suggested.

Review of the literature indicated that the State Government is promoting the use of PT through the development of multi-modal PT system; energy efficiency of PT is greater than that of automobile; ridership of PT by motorists removes a large number of personal cars from the road; and the reduction in number of vehicles on the roads reduces traffic congestion. It was concluded that, all these can curb fuel consumption in the state. Finally, the paper highlighted the lessons policy makers in Lagos and other growing cities in the country can learn to promote the use of PT and curb the growing gasoline consumption in the country.

One of such activities is shopping. The Internet has revolutionized the way shopping is done. The traditional shopping of visiting the store is fast being displaced by online shopping, especially in developed countries, where many customers shop online. However, the pace and rate of online shopping is slow in Nigeria despite the rising population of the Internet users. The objective of the paper was to examine the challenges of online shopping in retail industry in Nigeria. Being a theoretical paper, data were obtained mainly from secondary source. Some challenges were found to militate against adoption of online shopping in Nigeria's retail industry. These include cultural barriers, infrastructure challenge, security concern, perceived risk and inadequate regulatory framework. In conclusion, these challenges have led to the slow adoption of online shopping in Nigeria, and based on this it was recommended that e-tailers should embark on advertising campaign to break the entrenched traditional shopping habits of Nigerian consumers; governments should sensitize the general public on the importance and benefits of the Internet adoption; government, should partner with the local PC manufacturers to make PC ownership affordable; and should make laws (e.g. cyber crime law) that protect online shoppers.

The objective of this study was to examine the reasons for this situation. The study specifically assessed the role failure of the Nigerian government to address the grievances of the Niger Delta people played in causing and escalating the crisis in the region. Data were obtained from secondary sources and content analysis done. The analysis revealed that the frustration of the people of the Niger Delta resulting from the failure of the Nigerian government to satisfy their socioeconomic needs led them into and escalated the orgy of violence witnessed in the region. Specifically, the frustration was caused by the devastation of the environment of the region, pervasive poverty and underdevelopment, legislations of disempowerment and subjugation, inability to control the crude oil resource and suppression of the people by the machinery of the state. A conclusion was reached to the effect that Nigerian government is largely responsible for the orgy of violence in the region. In this sense, some recommendations were made to find lasting solution to peace in the region and prevent future re-occurrence. The limitations of the study were highlighted and the need for future research direction was also suggested.

A conclusion was drawn to the effect that since factors influencing customer loyalty have been established, GSM companies should note these and emphasize them in their marketing strategy.
