Hazna I settlement system during the latest period of its
existence (Ninevite V Period). The site, located in the
Khabur valley, contains cultural deposits dating from 3900
to 2700 BC. The analysis of spatial and stratigraphic dis-
tribution of the chipped and ground stone assemblage and
mass ceramic material has shown some long-term tenden-
cies and reflected the presence of several functional zones
within the settlement.

vehicles continues to fascinate today no less
than when Stuart Piggott (1974) first wrote
about the subject in Antiquity 40 years ago. A
growing number of examples from the steppes
of southern Russia and Ukraine are providing
new insights into the design and construction
of these complex artefacts. A recent example
from the Ulan IV burial mound illustrates
the techniques employed and the mastery
of materials, with careful selection of the
kinds of wood used for the wheels, axles
and other elements. Stable isotope analysis of
the individual interred in this grave showed
that he had travelled widely, emphasising the
mobility of steppe populations.

The site contains cultural deposits dating from 3900 to 2700 BC. The complex typological and technological analysis of chipped stone industry provides insight into the evolution of material culture as well as the place of this site in the socio-economic processes in the Northern Mesopotamia.

The site is related with Chalcolithic settlements in the North-west Caucasian foothills (Meshoko, Svobobnoe, Myskhako, Zamok, Yasenova Polyana). Their cultural attribution remains unclear yet. Some aspects of the Khutor Veselyj assemblage, e. g. predominance of bifacial tools, low number of blade tools show parallels with stone industry of Yasenova Polyana and the Meshoko upper layer. Assemblages from Svobodnoe and Myskhako are less similar. Now it is still difcult to dene a common tradition in chipped stone industries of these Chalcolithic sites.
