Manganese is a neurotoxic substance that accumulates in the central nervous system, where it may cause a neurological disorder that bears many similarities to Parkinson's disease. The aim of the study was to investigate the sources and levels of manganese exposure in foundry furnacemen by a combined measuring of blood-manganese (B-Mn) and manganese in ambient air (air-Mn). Methods: During a period of 16 months, Air-Mn and B-Mn (denoted exposure values') were measured involving 24 furnacemen employed in three small size foundries and 21 scrap recycling workers from one plant. In the study period, 18 furnacemen had B-Mn measured 3±4 weeks after decreasing or stopping exposure (denoted`post-exposure values'). The reference group for the B-Mn measurements consisted of 90 Danish male subjects. Results: Furnacemen who work in insuciently ventilated smelting departments inhale, absorb, and retain signi®cant amounts of manganese in their blood (approx. 2.5±5 lg/l above reference values) despite a generally low measured airborne level of manganese fumes (0.002±0.064 mg/m 3). The`exposure values' compared with`post-exposure values' revealed a signi®cant decrease in the B-Mn (on average 3.7 lg/l) level of the most exposed furnacemen. Two persons in our study were suspected of suering clinically subacute manganese intoxication as both had B-Mn levels beyond the normal limit (25 and 29 lg/l, respectively). The potential problem disappeared completely after cessation of exposure, and the B-Mn levels decreased to 9.4 and 14.1 lg/l, respectively. Conclusions: Risk assessment based on combined measurements of B-Mn and air-Mn seems to be valid in the interpretation of workers' hazard. Our study indicates that B-Mn may be a valuable parameter for estimating recent exposure (within 1±2 weeks). However, more knowledge is needed about the B-Mn level and its relation to neurological symptoms.

This study evaluated the feasibility of collecting the data variables of the international consensus-derived Utstein Trauma Template. Methods: Trauma centres from three different continents were invited to submit Utstein Trauma Template core data during a defined period, for up to 50 consecutive trauma patients. Directly admitted patients with a New Injury Severity Score (NISS) equal to or above 16 were included. Main outcome variables were data completeness, data differences and data collection difficulty. Results: Centres from Europe (n = 20), North America (n = 3) and Australia (n = 1) submitted data on 965 patients, of whom 783 were included. Median age was 41 years (interquartile range (IQR) 24 to 60), and 73.1% were male. Median NISS was 27 (IQR 20 to 38), and blunt trauma predominated (91.1%). Of the 36 Utstein variables, 13 (36%) were collected by all participating centres. Eleven (46%) centres applied definitions of the survival outcome variable that were different from those of the template. Seventeen (71%) centres used the recommended version of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS). Three variables (age, gender and AIS) were documented in all patients. Completeness > 80% was achieved for 28 variables, and 20 variables were > 90% complete. Conclusions: The Utstein Template was feasible across international trauma centres for the majority of its data variables, with the exception of certain physiological and time variables. Major differences were found in the definition of survival and in AIS coding. The current results give a clear indication of the attainability of information and may serve as a stepping-stone towards creation of a European trauma registry.

Nickel allergy the prevalence measures of contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis in 8th grade schoolchildren (aged 12-16 is common (2, 3, 5-12, 14, 16) and has been shown to increase the risk of development of hand eczema in years) in Odense, Denmark, and to examine the associations with atopic dermatitis, inhalant allergy and hand adults (18). It is not known whether other contact allergies also increase the risk and if the relationship eczema. Contact allergy to a standard series allergen was found in 15.2% of schoolchildren. The point prevalence of between contact allergy and hand eczema already exists in childhood and adolescence. The relationship between allergic contact dermatitis was 0.7% and the lifetime prevalence 7.2%, predominantl y in girls. The most atopic dermatitis and contact allergy is frequently discussed (19-26). A reduced (19-21), an equal (22, 23) as common contact allergens were nickel (8.6%) and fragrance mix (1.8%). Nickel allergy was clinically relevant well as a higher (24-26) prevalence of contact allergy in atopic dermatitis have been reported. More studies in 69% and fragrance allergy in 29% of cases. A signi cant association was found between contact allergy and hand of these relationships in children and adolescents and in follow-up studies have to be carried out before any eczema while no association was found between contact allergy and atopic dermatitis or inhalant allergy. In the conclusions can be drawn. The aim of this study was to estimate prevalence future this cohort of schoolchildren will be followed with regard to the course and development of atopic diseases, measures of contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis in an unselected population of adolescents, and to hand eczema and contact dermatitis. Key words: schoolchildren; atopic dermatitis; inhalant allergy; hand eczema; study the relationship to atopic dermatitis, inhalant allergy and hand eczema. multivariate graphical analysis.

The requirements are the criteria used by ECRIN to identify, and then certify, clinical trials units that can provide high quality, compliant and safe data management, as well as effective management of the underlying systems and IT infrastructure. This latest version results from a review in 2015 by ECRIN auditors, members of ECRIN's data centre Certification Board, and invited experts from a variety of trials units in Europe, and it reflects experience gained auditing trials units in 2014. Over and above their use for certification, the requirements are intended to describe good practice in data and IT management in clinical research, and in clinical trials in particular. They were developed by senior staff working in non-commercial clinical trials units in Europe, and are intended as a practical guide for staff working in IT and data management in that sector (though the same principles apply to all clinical research environments). The 129 requirements, or standards, included in the current version are divided into 19 separate lists, some focused on IT, some mainly concerned with data management, and some that deal with both. Each standard has a code, a title, and a single statement summarizing the requirement. This document provides, in addition, explanatory and elaboration material-usually a few paragraphs that attempt to clarify each statement's meaning, and / or give examples of its application, and which also indicate the evidence that would normally be used to assess a unit's compliance. The document also includes a

Population-based cohort study. Denmark. All singleton births in Denmark between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2006 were identified. These newborns were then linked to mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings using individually assigned civil personal registration numbers. We identified that data on childhood injuries were obtained from the Danish National Patient Registry, which contains data on all hospital stays and outpatient visits. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were estimated from birth using log-linear Poisson regression models, and person-years were used as the offset variable. Age, residence, calendar period, maternal education, maternal income and parental-cohabitation status are treated as time-dependent variables (records were extracted from the offspring's birth year).

Exposure to maternal ber...
