What role do moral norms play in promoting and consolidating the peacebuilding work?
Over the past sixty five years, numerous attempts have been made to define the characteristics of a peacebuilding process that leads to sustainable peace. Today, one can observe that only in a few countries ravaged by protracted conflicts have peace taken root. One may wonder then what are some of the elements that facilitated this process.
The aim of this dissertation is to explore, discuss and assess the importance of a moral and value-based approach to peacebuilding through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). My argument is that the UDHR, particularly the freedom of expression and opinion, the freedom of thought, conscience and religion and the right to education (Art. 18, 19. And 26 of the UDHR), create a framework for peace where one population is empowered to take ownership of its own spiritual, social and intellectual development as well as contribute actively towards the betterment of its society. Human Rights in this context are seen as moral and legal norms, standards and means to reach peace. To facilitate this process, I argue that the Faith-Based Organisations are well-placed to promote and diffuse these articles in order to establish a long lasting peace.
The case study of Sierra Leone is used to illustrate pertinently the role and the importance of a moral and value-based approach to peacebuilding for peace to take root. Without these moral and legal standards and the unity of the people of Sierra Leone dedicated to peace and justice, a positive and vibrant peacebuilding process would have been unattainable.
