Figurative language in business and economics. Berlin/ Boston: Mouton de Gruyter, 2012. Pp. 329. ISBN 978-3-11-027296-3.The book Metaphor and Mills. Figurative language in business and economics, edited by Honesto Herrera-Soler and Michael White (2012) is an important contribution to the study of economic metaphor as it exploits different facets of conceptual metaphors and it covers all aspects related to the study of metaphors in business and economic contexts: the translatability of metaphors, the teachability of conceptual metaphors, the frequency and density of conceptual metaphors in business texts, the aesthetic function of the metaphor and the role played by metaphors. There are many approaches to economic metaphors in business English texts. Our approach is based on corpus, we incorporated a corpus encompassing business articles retrieved from British quality press ranging from 2013 to 2016. In our investigation, we rely on previous research on the figurative aspects pertaining to business discourse. The conceptual metaphors were identified with the help of concordancing programs, headwords from different source and target domains were inserted in the concordancing program and the findings were manually processed. In certain cases, linguistic metaphors processed with the help of concordancing programs do not necessarily embody conceptual metaphors, these are mainly revealed through manual processing. The findings draw on the fact that figurative uses and conceptual metaphors easily percolate business English discourse. We are aware of the limitations of this research as the study cannot encompass all the categories conceptualising the economy. To this end categories such as ECONOMY IS WAR, ECONOMY IS AN ANIMAL, ECONOMY IS A CONTAINER, ECONOMY IS A LIQUID will be the subject of future research.

According to cognitive linguistic approach metaphors are clustered in different conceptual categories. The paper is structured around Conceptual Metaphor Theory and it analyses the mapping and conceptualisation of money metaphors by means of cognitive linguistic categories: money is liquid, money is solid. Out of the business metaphors we selected the money and money-related ones. We also analyse the means by which these categories are obtained: verbs, idioms, pre- and post-modifiers, etc.Â

The research involved questionnaires and interviews with students preparing to become teachers, teacher trainees enrolled on the teacher education module at the University of Alba Iulia, Romania, with students of other disciplines and with beginning teachers. The insights into the educational discourse and the way in which different metaphors, used almost unawares by the different discourse participants have provided us with a deeper understanding of how our future, our career path, attitudes and ideals are shaped by the way in which teachers talk to us.

The main tenet is that cognitive metaphors are instantiations of cultural categories manifested in the language spoken by the community that shares a common set of characteristics within a given cultural matrix. Our analysis is based on two corpora (British and Romanian), consisting of articles from general audience and financial broadsheets, written during 2012-2015. The newspapers used for this study are: The Economist, The Guardian, The New York Times and The Telegraph for the English corpus; and Adevarul, Jurnalul National, Cotidianul, Capital, and Ziarul Financiar for the Romanian corpus. The results were analyses both quantitatively and qualitatively.
