After the previous two volumes in the VIIIth issue of the Specimina Nova Pars Prima Sectio Mediaevalis we go back to the beginnings. As opposed to the volumes based on the materials of different conferences, the present issue consists of the studies of the researchers of the Department of the History of Medieval and Early Modern Times, Institute of History, University of Pécs. It is a pleasure that among the authors there is a PhD student of our department as a sign of promising supply of young historians, and furthermore we can also publish our respected German colleague’s study, who have been to Pécs on research trips and conferences several times in addition to the scientific cooperations.
As compared to the previous issues there is a new feature, namely the workshop section. Here we can read about the ongoing projects of our department besides two short reports given about the researches and their results by our Croatian scientific partner Marko Jerković, a researcher of the Center of Croatian Studies of the University of Zagreb.
In the section of the book review researchers and students of our institute and a PhD student from Babeș-Bolyai University (Romania) provide reviews about Hungarian works connected to our department and also German and English works considered interesting. The present issue gives also a short database with pictures of the publications related to our institution since 1998 (Related Publications) and the table of contents of the previous issues as well.

The Pauline Order the only monastic order, founded in Hungary is still a subject to write about, due to the fact that this is still active (they returned to Transylvania and founded a monastry at Hargitafürdő in 16th of January 2014).
The history of the pauline vicariate of Várad-Kápolna and its priories (Fugyivásárhely, Buzgó, Szentjobb, Kalodva, Patlan and Szilágynagyfalu monasteries) has never been treated completely before, even if summaries were written about it.

He is not the same with John, bishop of Cenad (1380-1395) and with John Cudar, the provost of Alba Regia (brother of Emeric Cudar, bishop of Oradea). The Cudar (meaning shabby) family had two bases: Bőcs and Ónod. We don't have any information about the ecclesiastic career of John before 1383. He was the last bishop of Oradea from the period, when the Hungarian Kingdom was led by the House of Anjou. John Cudar was involved in various processes, abuses, judicial cases. He was always loyal to king Sigismund (1387-1347), who gave him in exchange 2000 forint military pay and 4 possessions. His name became famous because because in 1390 he ordered the equestrian statue of Saint Ladislaus, made by Martinus and Georgius of Cluj. The statue was destroyed by Turks in 1660.

Elected by the Members of the Chapter” (1329–1345)

The prelate examined in this study was born as the first or second child of Brictius (Bereck)
from the Gutkeled gens, who also happened to be the ancestor of the Bátori family.
Perhaps Andrew studied in an Italian university. He occupied the office of cantor in the
chapter of Oradea (1319–1323). Then he became provost of Buda (1324–1329), vice-chancellor
(1324–1325) and royal chaplain (1326–1329). Andrew Bátori was the last bishop
(1329–1345) elected by the chapter. In fact the chapter approved the will of the king who
chose to make a bishop of his confidant. Andrew was the first bishop of Oradea whose
last name is known. With his brothers, John, Leukus (Lőkös) and Nicholas managing
jointly the possessions, he contributed to the growth of the assets that belonged either
to the Bátori family or to the Diocese of Oradea. Bishop Andrew had connections in
Italy. He enjoyed the support of Robert of Anjou, the king of Naples. Moreover he escorted
the King of Hungary to Naples in 1333, where Prince Andrew was betrothed to
Princess Joanna. In the time of the collection of Pontifical Tithes from the Diocese of
Oradea between 1332–1337 the bishop paid every year 100 silver marks (after the weight
of Buda), so his income is estimated to have been 1000 marks (3500 golden forints).
The importance of the bishop of Oradea is demonstrated by the fact that under papal
authorization, he would have crowned Louis the Great if the two archbishops were inhibited
from doing this. Andrew made it so that King Louis the Great donated to the
bishop and the chapter of Oradea the duties of Bihar, Békés and Zaránd county in 1342.
The main staff of the prelate were as follows: Peter archdeacon and Ladislas lector as vicars;
Bertrand provost, who became the defender of the rights of diocese of Oradea at the
Holy See; Gregory, the notarius of the bishop and at the same time the collegiate provost;
Colomannus (Kálmán) cantor, the illegitimate son of King Charles. Andrew Bátori
enthusiastically supported architectural work. He founded the monastery of Poor
Clares in Oradea, as the first female monastic order of the diocese. They had been placed
under the supervision of a rector and the Franciscans and they received a lot of donations.
Moreover, his name is associated to the construction of the St Andrew Chapel and
with the altar of St Brictius, as well as the extension of the cathedral in gothic style. His
pontifical seals from 1338 and 1340 have survived. The successor of Andrew Bátori was
Demetrius Meszesi (1345–1372) who was nominated by the pope, Clement VI, with the
right to dispose of the person of the bishop of Oradea (reservatio).
