L’ARCHEOLOGO SUBACQUEO XXX n.s., 76, 2024

A crucial key factor in the evolution of the coastal landscape of Butrint (southern Albania) is t... more A crucial key factor in the evolution of the coastal landscape of Butrint (southern Albania) is the dynamism of its lagoon. The Butrint peninsula is located at the end of the narrow strait that connects the Ionian Sea to the Vivari Lake and divides Butrint
from the Vrina plain, providing the city with a protected and optimal location for the exploitation of lagoon resources and the control of inland routes. Deposition of sediments from the Pavlla River, colluvium from the uplands in the mouth area, sea-level changes and bradyseism accelerated the formation of the Vrina plain and produced large backwaters. Settlement strategies and economic system in the territory of Butrint reveal a prevailing preference towards wetlands for economic exploitation and for shielding hilltop settlements to avoid the effect of swamping. In the dynamism of the coastal landscape, human action plays a key role: after the deduction of the Roman colony, the town expands on the now drained Vrina plain and becomes accessible by land through a bridge crossing the lagoon. This contribution presents settlement dynamics in the territory of Butrint and the possible access routes to the Acropolis in relation to the variations of the wetlands, from a diachronic perspective and in light of the latest surveys of the Butrint Project (University of Bologna and Archaeological Institute of Tirana). Special focus will be given to the
discussion of the preliminary results of the underwater survey in the Vivari channel, which uncovered the collapsed remains of the Roman bridge.

The discus- sion examines two UNESCO World Heritage sites, which due to their conservation and archaeological im- portance constitute a privileged field of application. The methodology used in The Great Pompeii Project – Knowledge Plan made it possible to extend the application of digital documentation to the Butrint National Park (Southern Albania). The Butrint Project arises from the collaboration between the University of Bologna and the Archaeological Institute of Tirana, and aims to create a unified, up-to-date, accurate and scientifical- ly valuable topographical documentation of the site, overcoming the fragmentary of the context as a result of discontinuous and centennial fieldworks. Simultaneously, the analysis of surface degradation and static risk factors will allow us to obtain digital products useful for risk assessment and planning of conservation and restoration works.

Starting from a diachronic overview of population and economic resources of the Epirote landscape, the paper proposes a focus on some archaeological indicators useful to the reconstruction of Epirote ancient economy, whose studies still lack a systematic perspective on the entire region. Finally, some archaeozoological data from Phoinike and Butrint provide a preliminary
environmental and economic framework related to cultural, residential and subsistence needs of local communities.

The international archaeological missions that have investigated the acropolis of the site over the last century have brought to light few but clear traces of frequentation of the area. Pottery, an ash altar and roof tiles suggest that this was probably a cult place: the proximity and control of Corcyra over the mainland makes it plausible that the island had a role in shaping its appearance, however its features are still debated. The recent excavations and topographic surveys of the University of Bologna offer the opportunity for a new analysis of the historical and archaeological context in which Archaic Butrint is framed, as well as, at the same time, put forward open research questions that will need to be developed by future excavation campaigns.

This context is investigated by the authors through a diachronic analysis of archaeological data, approaching the theme of the landscape from four different but complementary perspectives: fortified landscapes, sacred landscapes, rural landscapes, and epigraphic landscapes. In their respective thematic sections, the history of Chaonia is retraced from the genesis of ancient settlement during the Bronze Age, through the phenomenon of the so-called second Greek colonization, to the birth of the Epirote state in the Hellenistic age, and until the profound changes brought by the progressive expansion of Roman dominion.

The proposed research approached the topic by attempting to historicise it, by projecting the challenges of the present into the societies of the past, and by attempting to respond to the provocative invitation inherent in the title of the conference: has there ever been a balance between man and nature? The main objective was to determine the level of ecological awareness inherent in ancient societies and to identify the possible solutions implemented, trying to answer two questions in particular: what were the choices (political, economic, social) implemented during climatic variations, and how were they perceived by ancient societies? Were these choices linked to ‘environmentalist’ awareness, or did a purely utilitarian purpose prevail?

Research paper thumbnail of New insights into the upland landscape of ancient Epirus, Southern Albania. Short Presentation

Upland Archaeology Workshop. Round Table, 2023

Ancient Epirus, divided between southern Albania and northwestern Greece, is characterised by a h... more Ancient Epirus, divided between southern Albania and northwestern Greece, is characterised by a highly dynamic ancient landscape. In a predominantly mountainous region such as Epirus, with reliefs running subparallel to the coast alternated with valleys crossed by the main watercourses, it must necessarily be considered that the characteristics of the territory have affected the dynamics and settlement patterns as well as the economic structure of the region. Consequently, in this environmental context, relying on farming and pastoral resources, linked to short-distance mobility, and natural resources as part of the exploitation of the uncultivated landscape is a winning solution in a diachronic perspective. This fits well with the forms of tribal aggregation in open villages that characterised the population dynamics until at least the mid-4th century BC, when they were joined by urban centres and secondary fortified sites. The studies carried out by the Archaeological Mission of the University of Bologna and the Institute of Archaeology of Tirana (Butrint Project) have focused on surface investigations in some of the fortified hilltop sites in the Pavla river basin. Peculiarities of the mountain environment imply a series of natural factors which compromise the preservation of the archaeological record and reduce visibility on the ground. In addition, the specificities of the context into consideration, characterised by well-preserved but hardly datable walls and poorly diagnostic archaeological material lying on the surface, complicate the interpretation further. The paper intends to present some of the case studies by observing their methodological problems and proposing some interpretative approaches, in order to understand the role of hilltop sites in the management, control and exploitation of land and road network.
