The analysis will focus on five unpublished registers for the collection of the tithe in the Collectorate formed by the ecclesiastical provinces of the Kingdom of Sicily. The first results of this research will allow to draw an initial picture of the action of the collector Pietro da Ferentino, to provide new and important details regarding the dioceses involved, the coins paid, the sums collected, and to shed new light on the dynamics of power and negotiation strategies between the various actors involved in the tithe.

The hoard consists of 91 gold coins: 83 Florentine florins, seven Venetian ducats and one deceptive imitation (or counterfeit) ducat of apparently good gold, dating between 1313 and c.1369. Given the scarcity of numismatic evidence and the inadequacy of archival documentation for those years, this material provides important details about the circulation of ducats and florins in the Kingdom of Sicily-Aragon, in a period in which Sicilian and Southern Italian mints had ceased to mint gold. This study also sheds light on further aspects of these coinages, including the use of secret marks on Venetian ducats, the production of imitation ducats, the identification of individual florins and their chronologies. A die analysis reveals connections with the almost contemporary Montella hoard (1354).

African, Islamic, Byzantine, Crusader gold coins, however, never ceased to circulate within the Mediterranean. By considering all possible connections between East and West, this article provides new insights on long-debated problems related to the 13th century ‘back to gold’, namely the chronology and the identification of the first Genoese gold coins, and the rise of the gold florin of Florence.

The analysis of this material, namely the hoards of Lipari 1 and Lipari 2, will be developed by briefly sketching the historical background of the island in medieval and early modern times, emphasising the scarcity of documentary and numismatic evidence for the period under examination; then, by illustrating the main features of each hoard and providing a feasible date for their concealment.

Saints were a common theme on Italian medieval coins, especially bishop saints as founders of the Christian civitas. New saints were eventually represented on coins issued by seigniorial authorities, and at the same time a new iconographic scheme was developed significantly in seigniorial coinages (i.e. Padua, Pesaro, Camerino, Modena, Asti), where the local saint, bishop or martyr, was represented holding a model of the city in his hand.
