All proposals must be sent by March 31, 2017. Funerary sculpture is definitely a precious source for the understanding of the Middle Ages but also, due its complex nature as an artistic, aesthetic, spiritual, historical, anthropological, sociological and cultural artefact, it implies a true and authentic interdisciplinarity, which is one of this congress' main focus. Moreover, this scientific meeting wishes to contribute to broaden the approach to these sculptures by encouraging their analysis also from a patrimonial and museological perspective. This means to give attention to the materiality of the tombs (both the original and the one they have been given throughout their existence), to the restoration processes they were or are being submitted to, to their transfers and changes of context, as well as to the museum projects they integrate. This volume examines the history of the Order’s Italian branch, arguing that it served as an intermediary between East and West, as well as North and South. It reflects on the reasons for the Teutonic Order’s success and the persistence of its settlement, particularly its ability to adapt to various and changing political and economic contexts, and its talent in garnering the support of the local population. Not only focusing on political, diplomatic, economic and religious history but also considering the history of art and architecture, spirituality, prosopography and eve- ryday life, this book portrays the Teutonic Order in Italy as an example of medieval coexistence, collaboration and crossing borders. This book will be a useful study for scholars interested in medieval Italy, cross-cultural history and the military religious orders of the medieval period.

To outline, in a subsequent study, the reasons for the late conversion of these peoples to Christianity, which they welcomed with little enthusiasm, it is necessary to observe at first the Christian authors' perception of pagans and identify the motivations and the ideological bases behind the representation of the Baltic world they provided. All this will allow us, in the future, to identify the opinions the pagans themselves had on christianity and christians.

The aim of this paper is to answer to the question, what exactly was known about the history of s... more The aim of this paper is to answer to the question, what exactly was known about the history of southern Italy before the birth of the nineteenth-century positivist historiography ? The art historians like Aubin-Louis Millin who ‛rediscovered’ the South Italian Middle Ages in the napoleonic and post-napoleonic era did not move in an unexplored space, as there existed a consistent amount of works on Mezzogiorno and its past rulers, translated or originally written in several parts of Europe since the 17th century. Two of those works, the Compendio delle historie del Regno di Napoli of Pandolfo Collenuccio (first edition in 1539) and the Civil History of the Kingdom of Naples of Pietro Giannone (1723) were translated in French, English, German, Latin and Spanish and can be considered as ‛best sellers’ of their time. Though, some other historians did have success in Europe, like Scipione Mazzella, thanks to his work translated in English as Parthenopeia or the history of Naples (1654). The interest for the history of the southern Italy was motivated on one hand by the attempt of the Roman Curia to affirm its supremacy on the Kingdom, and the consequent propagandistic work carried out by authors such Cesare Baronio and by their opponents. On the other hand, most of the authors writing on this topics were French, a fact that can be explained by the direct interests of the French Crown in the South Italy, specially when the Bourbons rised to the Spanish and thereafter also to the Sicilian throne, in the 18th century. The French historiography reached a good scientific level with works such as Histoire des rois des deux Siciles de la maison de France of Charles Philippe de Monthenault d’Egly (1741). The today's perception of the medieval kings of Sicily, was in big part created by the historiography of the Modern Era, with great consideration for the Norman dynasty, lot of controversy about the Hohenstaufen and generally negative attitude towards Charles I of Anjou. The rule of Charles I has produced also two important historical and cultural topics: this of the insurrection of the Sicilian Vespers and this of the execution of the young Conradin. The latter was chosen in 1545 by Martin Luther as an argument in his polemics agains the papacy and became in consequence very well known in the protestant Europe, including the Scandinavia. It can be affirmed that the 17h-18th century history writing had undoubtly a strong ideological influence on the art historians working on South Italy and might have influenced their educational path.

First of all, the factor of continuity between the taxation of Charles I and that of his successors will be examined, coming to hypothesize the existence of a system of taxation created at the end of the Norman era which retains its essential characteristics still in the Aragonese Quattrocento. Secondly, will be observed the measures taken by the Angevins to remedy the crisis, caused by war, famine and epidemics, among which there is a greater recourse to procurement, the introduction of large-scale credit economy, the attempt to exercise greater control over public officials and the partial delegation of tax rights to local authorities. Finally, I will try to identify the innovations introduced by the successors of Charles I in the economic system of the continental kingdom, starting with the development of the production of wheat and transhumance of cattle and ending with the birth of an import-export policy. The study will allow to produce some conclusions on the character of the taxation and administration of the Angevin South Italy, examined from a point of view that aims to overcome the historiographical preconceptions, relying on long-lasting phenomena.

The adherence of women to the Order came under several institutional forms. Some women were laypeople, associated consorores who carried out the Order’s activities, sometimes working in its hospitals. Others lived in the houses of the Order of St John, where they could also take the vows, with consequent formation of “mixed” convents or monasteries. But in some cases, separate nunneries were created or assimilated from other communities. Some historians have seen a different evolution from the initial vocation of women, which consisted of field activities in support of the poor and the sick, and would later become a strictly cloistered life. This change can be observed by examining the biographies of the two Italian female Hospitaller saints, Ubaldesca and Toscana. Yet, local development varied, and the situation in an important city like Florence differed from nunneries in smaller localities like Sovereto or Penne. Finally, several interesting sources allow us a glimpse of the spirituality and norms in those women’s daily lives compared to male religiosity. The medieval Italian nunneries of St John never became an autonomous branch of the Order, but at the same time, they were not a rare or exceptional phenomenon.

Outside France, Great Britain, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, the research developed itself at first specially in Germany and then in Poland, while in the remaining countries in Europe and the rest of the world, the first important steps were made only after 1980, under the influence of the scientific progress, the activities of some major scientific institutions and the new political situation in the Eastern Europe. The Palmela Encounters offer us a rather realistic picture of the state of research on Military Orders, as its last edition gathered historians from ten different countries, including Germany and Italy, but also Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia and Switzerland.
