The authors seek to quantify and qualify current and potential ‘reciprocal heritage benefits’ thanks to available information from strategic research – including the development of improved visitor and engagement strategies. They argue that it is necessary to re-examine the dynamic role that cultural heritage could potentially play in contemporary society, not just looking to reduce threats but seeking to transform them, wherever possible, into opportunities for ensuring that cultural heritage can contribute benefits to the modern world and – within a reciprocal relationship – gain benefits from a society that is more involved in its management and conservation. The first step in the planning process was to survey all the mosaics, assessing their condition, significance, and degree of exposure. A survey form was created that enabled the assignment of overall conservation priority ratings, as well as an estimation of work time for conservation interventions. An additional aid in the planning process has been the creation of a new topographic plan for the site and a geographic information system (GIS). The decision was made to rebury many of the exposed mosaics while maintaining and presenting selected others without allowing visitors to walk on them.

The focus of the project Tracce in luce is the external decoration of the fortress of Vignola (MD... more The focus of the project Tracce in luce is the external decoration of the fortress of
Vignola (MD). The fragile fragments of the architectonic and heraldic colourful
decorations are the latest evidence of a rich ensemble of frescos - now almost
completely lost - that adorned the upper parts of the fortress during the first
decades of the fifteenth century AD.
A multidisciplinary team has worked for ane year to achieve the exact and
complete identification of the ancient drawings and colours of the decorative
frescoes. The interaction between traditional and historical research and new
survey techniques with light-based technologies, such as 3D laser scanning relief
and high resolution photographic campaign of the fragments by UAV drone with
GPS, has allowed a rigorous philological research to recompose the ancient
decorative motifs. Furthermore, a video-mapping lighting projection of the
recomposed decorations recreated the splendid originai aspect of the south-west
façade of the castle.
The adoption of projected light for conservation projects enlarges the legibility and
the interpretation of historical and artistic objects and offers new non-invasive
methods in the restoration of artefacts, with the option to update the data as the
level of knowledge increases. We believe that the combination of traditional and
innovative approaches ensures consistency of method, historical awareness and
new ways of interpreting research results.

The Herculaneum Conservation Project (HCP) is a collaborative venture between the Soprintendenza ... more The Herculaneum Conservation Project (HCP) is a collaborative venture between the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, the Packard Humanities Institute, and the British School at Rome. The project aims to halt the progressive decay of the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, and includes rescuing the archaeological remains from immediate danger and the implementation of a conservation strategy in order to favour the long-term survival of the site. In order to understand the work involved and to establish best practices, one of the first steps taken was the adoption of an entire urban block, the Insula Orientalis I, as a case study area. HCP employed a team of multidisciplinary consultants to analyse and record the standing remains of this insula; the results of their research are providing the basis for any decision-making in the conservation, restoration and presentation to the public of the Insula Orientalis I. From the outset it was evident that a unique information management tool was needed to homogeneously record structured data collected in the field by each specialist. The information system has to provide immediate access to information and a prompt answer to any query made by different specialists on any aspect of the complex. This paper shows how the Insula Orientalis Information System manages to integrate specific approaches to analysis by creating a single geodatabase which is referenced to a detailed survey of the buildings with 'fly through' access. It provides useful tools for administrative management, as well as powerful instruments for scientific analysis and 3D visualization of results.

The answer of the Parco archeologico di Ercolano (the local heritage authority) proposed in this paper was developed in the context of the Herculaneum Conservation Project and sees the systematic strengthening in recent years of site-wide monitoring and maintenance campaigns, a core outcome the long-standing partnership with the Packard Humanities Institute. The methods and processes that have been tested at Herculaneum are extremely innovative, not necessarily from the point of view of the technology or equipment used (which is simple and widely available), but with regards to the precision and wide-spread system of monitoring and maintenance, which will keep the archaeological site ‘under observation’ long into the future. Thanks to the long- term testing and the results obtained, the authors believe that – even without the catalysing effect of the public-private partnership –the methodological and management approaches adopted at Herculaneum can be replicated elsewhere and similar results obtained.

The Herculaneum Conservation Project and the Herculaneum Centre have been working to overcome complex problems at the site, and have gained public attention for their approach to heritage conservation and management, and consideration for the potential implications of future approaches with regard to heritage management in general. This paper will explore these themes by discussing several specific initiatives that illustrate the impact of partnership at Herculaneum and where progress still needs to be made.
