Consisting of two huge buildings of reinforced concrete, wrapped gateways and corridors, industrial building that has become since the cessation of activity a creative medium and dreams, Spot street renowned of international art. It is also for residents and walkers a marker of “pantinois” landscape, strong element of its industrial heritage of the twentieth century. At the time of their rehabilitation to accommodate an advertising agency, it seemed essential to know and to convey the story of 70 years of activity of these old warehouses, where the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris has significant investments: the port of Pantin was indeed the highlight of his ambitions to serve the storage and movement of goods. Based on archives and a rich iconographic collection that reveal the complex history of political, involving sometimes conflicting interests between the city of Paris, the department of the Seine and the Chamber of Commerce of Paris, this book traces the history of the building, the many vagaries of its construction and its constant changes and adaptations to the economic, political, technical and social context. It offers at the same time a chronicle of the transformations in the Paris region and of Pantin’s city.

For those who are interested in industrial heritage, it would then add an extra stone on the long path of destruction witnesses of a past society. But it goes far beyond.
Jean-Luc Rigaud is not a newcomer among researchers and activists of industrial heritage.
Personal experience, fed by his reading and his many travels around the world, have already led him to express his ideas in academia (His courses in Versailles and Sorbonne’s universities ) as well as in research on case studies like the one he conducted on the working class city of Cadbury’s chocolate maker in Bournville. Came from the arts (he was for long time art gallery manager), he considers the industrial heritage as a structural element of the culture of "honest man" of the XXI century.
It is undoubtedly this broader conception of culture that it manifests and implements (I think especially about a seminar, organized by him to the Sorbonne’s university, based on the music and workers topic) who did him interest in an entire sector of the industrial history curiously left behind so far: the history of recorded sound. While industrial music has invaded all spheres, domestic as well as public, we do not have a study on the subject. Heritage of recorded sound, established industrial fact, has not attracted the attention of researchers. The first merit of the work of Jean-Luc Rigaud is completing this astonishing vacuum to give a solid history of recorded sound and followed by an equally strong Pathé’s company history. Regardless of the product and its technical twists (cylinders and discs), links to radio and film, Pathé behaves like any populating plant (3,000 workers in 1950),
with a strong grip on its own environment and social policy in the twentieth century. It was rebuilt in the thirties by English architects, following the rules of the art deco, having undeniable aesthetic qualities. As long as it works and its trajectory is upward, it’s not challenged and pollution which it is responsible is tolerated. The drop in production, very fast, leads the closure in 1992. From this point it is assigned all evils nuisance, architectural wart, what is more close to the cemetery.
If the previous chapters are an original contribution to the history of the companies and the recorded sound industry, those that describe the disenchantment, abandonment and wipeout are the deepest. The inexorable fall, explained step by step is followed. The former workers gradually leave the area to live their retirement elsewhere. The force they could constitute for a defense of the site goes off by itself. The municipality, which represent increasingly a well-off society in the western suburbs of Paris, do not want an industrial relic, even of quality, but does not know what to do with it, and leave to stage a memory, it is preferred that one of the Impressionists (Vlaminck lived in Chatou), forgetting that they, in fact, sang plants along the Seine and plumes of smoke. Of course the decision is not taken immediately. It is preferred that the omission to do his work, to invoke one day, the impossible reuse of the site. The factory closed in 1992, it disappeared in 2004.
The care with which the announced end is exposed is a model study. It's a little wish of the author, who sees in the procedures a layer that could be applied to all industries promised to disappear. Constructing and deconstructing, typically it’s the urban practice, since the urban fact exist. It is often said, with regard to the industrial heritage, we can’t keep everything. We can’t either destroy anything except losing the sense of our existence. A book like that one reminds us it usefully in beautiful handwriting, which is developing as a long poem.” Gracia Dorel-Ferré

My article clarifies the situation of the Pathé Company before the First World War, during and also at the end. It’s about propaganda music, popular music, national, regional but also from the settlements. With the integration of African-American troops in the French army, jazz emerged in the trenches! From an economic point of view, the leading company in Europe in the record market at the end of the war declines before being absorbed by the British Columbia Company in the late 20s.
