Located northeast of the ancient settlement, this cemetery underwent extensive excavation by the Superintendency between 1963 and 1967, yielding more than one thousand graves spanning from the end of the 7th to the end of the 5th century BCE. Burial contexts were fully published by Meola between 1996 and 1998. Remarkably, from the reconstruction of ritual practices, two data points stand out: the high percentage of secondary cremations and the relatively low number of child interments, both lacking parallels in the burial customs of Greek Sicily. This paper proposes a reassessment of these data through a re-examination of contextual information.

The painted inscription, placed on the inside of the bowl, was characterized using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) in situ, and micro-Raman spectroscopy on a micro-sample, revealing the use of an ochre pigment. The inscription shows a few but clearly legible letters that can be read as part of an anthroponym or a theonym. The archaeological context and the state of conservation of the fragment suggest that the object is related to the phases preceding the construction of Temple R (628-570 BC) or, alternatively, that it was used in connection with the activities related to the construction of the building.

The work will consider three different aspects related to these objects: iconography, spatial distribution of the finds and type of contexts containing statuettes. Through the re-analysis of the evidence from the two cemeteries of Buffa and Manicalunga-Timpone Nero (late 7th-5th century BC), it will be shown that clay figurines played a minor role in the construction of grave assemblages; however, they were involved in a broad spectrum of post-funeral ritual practices that will be thoroughly discussed here.

Finds without context from the necropolis of Selinus • The sporadic finds from cemeteries are rarely considered in classical archaeology. Those objects are generally interpreted as coming from dismembered graves and consequently excluded from the reconstruction of funerary practices. Through the re-analysis of the evidence from the necropolis of Buffa in Selinus, this paper wants to redress the imbalance and demonstrate the informative potential of the sporadic finds. If properly studied, these represent an important source for the understanding and the reconstruction of the nature of the funerary and post-funeral practices, as well as of the cemeteries landscape.

The object is analyzed in the context of the first contacts between Greeks and indigenous people in Southern Italy, particularly open to experimentation and hybridity. The treatment of the decorative motif on the neck of the vase offers the opportunity to reflect on apprenticeship and transmission of craft knowledge in the Greek world.
