Words alluding to navigation (like "magnet", "sextant") are frequent in Leaves of Grass, such as in "Passage to India", where he writes: The plans, the voyages again, the expeditions; Again Vasco de Gama sails forth, Again, the knowledge gained, the mariner's compass" (s. 4, l. 75-80, 414). Like Amerigo Vespucci, Columbus, or Vasco de Gama and the various naturalists, astronomers, entomologists, geologists etc. who accompanied the great explorers-the poet's task, is to observe the world, to collect as much information as he can, and to draw all sorts of maps: geographical, topographical, geological, botanical, zoological, but also maps of the populations, historical maps, memory maps, in order to give us a global vision of the earth and of his own imaginary space.

In this context, mass media iconography, for instance, the "genetic map," plays an important role in the public communications of science and technology. It facilitates the understanding of an often abstruse technoscientific discourse and a complex experimental methodology. Powerful and potent iconography can achieve the beautification of a technoscientific fact or can underscore widespread public concerns and open resistance to it more effectively than any words. As a part of a journalist's routine, iconography is used for the purposes of popularizing, concretizing, and dramatizing issues, in brief for making issues both newsworthy and interesting for the public audiences. Generally, the iconography in the mass media through its rhetoric and ideological charge often contributes to shaping public opinion (positive or negative) on a scientific fact or a new technology.

The differing modes of utilizing umbilical cord blood are connected to the establishment of public and private banking. The public and private banks are associated with different social meanings. Public banks are associated with the principles of redistributive economy, while, the private banks with that of market economy. The practices of umbilical cord blood banks, as it has been demonstrated by studies from the interdisciplinary field “Science, Technology, Society”, render less rigid the distinction between public and private banking.
By focusing on the mobility of the umbilical cord blood cells in a wide network of infrastructure and organizations that surround its utilization, we intend to show the factors that make problematic the binary and opposed consideration of the public-private character in the two modes of umbilical cord blood banking.

Particularly, the iconography in media acts as a powerful means of communication. A powerful and potent iconography can achieve the beautification of a technoscientific fact or can underscore the widespread public concerns and open resistance about it more effectively than any words. It facilitates the understanding of an, often obscure, technoscientific discourse and/ or an elaborate experimental methodology. Moreover, it portrays scientists at work or at the time of their scientific triumph, makes the microcosm visible, depicts our biological structure. Generally, the iconography in mass media through its rhetoric and ideological charge often contributes to shaping the public opinion (positive or negative) on a scientific fact or a new technology. Finally, the iconography is part of a journalist's routine and is used for the purposes of popularizing, concretizing and dramatizing issues, in brief for making stories both newsworthy and interesting for their audiences.

While the scientists are at work or their scientific triumph, they visualize microcosm by making it visible, analyze our biological structure and generally our cause through a rhetorical and ideological use of their positive or negative images of a scientific fact. For journalists, images are part of a journalist’s routine used for the purposes of popularizing, concretizing and dramatizing issues, in brief for making issues both newsworthy and interesting for the relevant audiences.
The Human Genome Project is one of the most important scientific events which has been covered by the media and the public attention which has received has helped to change the relationship between science and society. The purpose of this announcement is to present a review of the results of a case study that focuses on the media images of Human Genome Project in the most popular Greek newspapers and how their use has affect science communication. Specifically, we examine a series of selected photographs, sketches and drawings that surrounded / accompanied the publications which, have contributed to the development of a specific public image for Human Genome Project.

In this context, images, such as genetic map, which are used by the media, play an important role in the public communications of science. They facilitate the understanding of an, often obscure, technoscientific discourse and experimental methodologies.

The technoscientific developments have shaped the world around us and at the same time are being ... more The technoscientific developments have shaped the world around us and at the same time are being shaped by society. We embark from academic studies about scientific and technological controversies and their public communication, originating from the field of Science, Technology and Society (STS), broadly influenced from the findings of the history of science and technology disciplines. At the same time, recent research has led to considerations regarding more participatory and deliberative procedures about decision-making affecting science and technology research and policies, especially when risk and uncertainty are prevailing. Literature is one of the various modes of communicating science and technology in the public domain. The public image of science and technology influences positive and critical considerations about their development and their role in everyday life.
In our paper we consider open issues regarding public policy in the play of Henrik Ibsen called An Enemy of the people (1882). In the play, Doctor Thomas Stockmann is a popular citizen of a small coastal town in Norway, who discovers that the waters of the town’s new thermal baths were being polluted. The Doctor informs the authorities and suggests solutions to deal with the risks of causing diseases to the tourists using the baths. At the beginning he is supported by his environment and local media. However, the issue of repairing the baths has serious tradeoffs, and the Mayor of the town, who is the Doctor’s brother, considers that it could lead to the financial devastation of the town. At a town meeting the different positions are presented and the Doctor’s opinion loses its merit in the public.
In this paper we shall attempt to examine the following issues in Ibsen’s play and in connection to recent developments in STS scholarship. We are interested in the way a scientific controversy reaches the public through media communication. Furthermore, we are focusing on the role of the media coverage in framing scientific data and the authority of scientists. In addition, we pay special attention to various modes of deliberative processes on decision making, more particularly for issues of public health benefit versus potential health risks. We believe that Ibsen’s play provides us with interesting insights on contemporary questions regarding science and technology policy.

It is assumed that journalists simply communicate science and technology, which are shaped only by scientists and engineers. In other words, the newspaper and the rest of the mass media, printed and electronic, are considered to be communicators of the products of the laboratory, which come ready-made. They don’t participate in shaping them. Our presentation seeks to challenge this assumption. The mass media are not passive mediators to science and technology. As constructed through them, the public image of science and technology returns to the laboratory and influences the shaping of science and technology. Differently put, the writings of the journalist feedback to the laboratory and actively participate in the making of its products. At the same time, the scientist and the engineer are inherently concerned with the public image of his/her products. In short, the co-shaping of science (or technology) and its public image takes place in a field that reaches all the way from the laboratory to the newspaper (and the rest of the mass media). In defense of this argument, we will present samples from a program of primary research on Greek mass media archives. This program takes advantage of (just as it hopes to contribute to) approaches and observations that refer to the History of Science and Technology and an interdisciplinary field of study known as ‘Science, Technology, Society’ (or ‘Science and Technology Studies’). The samples to be presented cover some critical areas of contemporary science and technology, from computing and biotechnology to renewable energy. ""

This project is funded by the Onassis Foundation and is hosted by the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, School of Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Sponsored by: Department of History and Philosophy of Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Onassis Foundation, and EASST (European Association for the Study of Science and Technology)

We invite contributions from scholars who are interested in critical approaches to the theoretical framework and the methodology involved in STS/HTS perspectives on UCB biobanking.

Possible topics include:
• Commercialization initiatives in UCB biobanking / the production of biovalue(s).
• Ideologies of UCB biobanking.
• Varieties of UCB biobanking institutional configurations and regulatory issues.
• Public awareness and citizen participation in UCB donation/storage: the perspective of the voluntary donor, the organization of patient engagement, other non-expert involvement in UCB banking settings.
• UCB biobanking in global, national and local media (newspapers, tv broadcasting, social media). The connection between media coverage/framing and UCB banking practices and health policies.
• Futuristic discourses and science/technology forecasting of UCB bioeconomies: challenges, public health policies and cooperation strategies (e.g. the financial sustainability of UCB banks, the future value of UCB as inscribed in current banking configurations).
• Big data issues in UCB banking settings.
• Approaches to the use of UCB in therapeutic practices (allogeneic and autologous transplants) and regenerative medicine.

One commonly used describes them as organised collections of biological samples and associated data. Biobanks offer a site of interaction between the public, patients, researchers, physicians, bioinformaticians, regulators, policy makers and companies. The relationships between these actors are not always smooth. Debates over biobanking design and practices are rather frequent. The governance of biobanks is a complex process "since the domains of science and technology, healthcare, economy, law as much as the public administration each operate according to different logics and emphasize different values or motives to different degrees", according to Gottweis & Lauss. Challenges in the governance of biobanks:  The multitude of options regarding the institutional forms of biobanks, and their mode of governance. The same applies for the diversity in regulatory frameworks, especially in relation to the interplay of national and transnational practices that have emerged.  Following that, the emergence of a need for harmonization and common standards regarding the quality of data (and samples) with reference to an envisaged potential to share them, for the benefit of research.  Different ways to engage citizens-depending on local setting and existing practices.  At a broader level, the institutional setting comes in relation to the national view on biobanking projects (biologic material as national resource, a national DNA repository) and their positioning in the bioeconomy, meaning their relation to economic development.
