"Lost" Russian Media Generations in a Changing Social and Digital Environment, 2023

The restrictions on social media and some media access following the beginning of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine in 2022 has resulted in a turbulent media environment detrimental to the subjective well-being of Russian "digital" media generations, especially young adults. Analysis of the reasons behind the emergence of "lost" generations in the history of Russia and other countries allows us to conclude that geopolitical factors such as wars, economic shocks, and major epidemics can lead to generational "loss". From the perspective of digital divide theory, it may be said that we are now dealing with a new kind of digital inequality. The discreteness of the media flow, whose continuity is crucial primarily for "digital" media generations and their media identity, has created a unique combination of factors contributing to further exacerbation of the digital divide. To minimize the destructive consequences of emerging media transformations, it is important to ensure comprehensive media and information support for Russian "digital natives", along with socio-political and psychological assistance.

These media threats and methods of neutralizing them were tested on a group of respondents of different ages in 10 Russian cities. We hypothesized that these threats and methods of their minimization can be perceived in different ways by representatives of the media and consumers who are not professionally linked with the media. For this purpose, two groups of respondents from Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg were tested in 2016-2017. These groups consisted of students of journalism departments and students of specialties not related to media. The sample group consisted of 300 people – the representatives of the digital generation, the Millennials. In the course of the study, we found that media threats for future media specialists and future specialists in other fields are different, and the ways to minimize them also vary considerably. Therefore, to ensure the productive and safe use of communication resources and to analyze their impact, it is important to study the opinion not only of information and communication specialists but of other young citizens as well.

According to Friedman’s core-periphery model, these differences are caused by the discrepancies in regional development. The purpose of this study was to assess the quality and quantity of multimedia materials produced by the regional mass media in the Ural Federal District. In this paper, multimedia production is understood as content creation by using texts, photos, video and audio materials, graphics and hyperlinks. We developed a five-point scale for assessment of multimedia materials and analyzed the publications of eighteen media holdings operating within the Ural Federal District. We also conducted structured interviews with regional journalists. In total, we analyzed more than a thousand media texts produced in 2017 and the same number in 2018. It was found that in 2017, only 5% and in 2018, 7% of texts could qualify as multimedia products (each received 2-3 points out of 5). Interestingly enough, most multimedia texts were created by private media while state-owned and state-controlled media seemed reluctant to do so. According to our interviewees, the regional state media are more focused on delivering the 'message ‘from the government to the people rather than developing new technologies in journalism.

This allows us to single out holistic media generations, the distinctive features of which are not only different generational media practices, often in mismatched media environments, but also different thematic vectors of interests, which generally characterize generational media subcultures. Based on the author's sociocultural concept of media generations and the use of the Sketch Engine, a modern cloud tool for studying large text collections, arrays of frequency vocabulary of text media corpora were formed, thematic repertoires of media intentions focused on the typically "analogue" and typically "digital" media generations are revealed. The comparative analysis made it possible to identify the dominant vocabulary groups that we identify as markers of generations that complement the characteristics of generational media subcultures. The markers of the typically "analogue" media generation are the topics of family, person in work, state and power, history of the country, and the typically "digital" one is the topics of business, labor, state and public order, family, entertainment.

The work is devoted to the influence of intercultural sensitivity and communicative-cultural memo... more The work is devoted to the influence of intercultural sensitivity and communicative-cultural memory on the development of media communications and involves identification of a repertoire of identifications, building Russians' discursive identity in the English-language media space. In this study, communities are representatives of the institutional environment − official media journalists and non-institutional environments - bloggers and writers. The stories' analysis results show that Russian and non-Russian communicators use similar facts in stories about Russians, but appraisal positions are often the opposite. In Russian journalists' discourse, one can see a characteristic feature of Russians, which probably does not fit into the framework of thought of the rest of communicators - a manifestation of the Russian duality "in almost all aspects of behavior." Non-Russian cultures representatives mostly broadcast the presumption of a negative assessment. We believe that such dissimilarity in the construction of identity reflects the insufficient level of intercultural sensitivity and the previously formed cultural and historical memory and is explained by an attempt to apply the experience of the cultural memory, the "recreated past" to the interpretation of the "other". These differences are now being used by political actors to support specially organized "informational confrontations" and popularize "threats". Since all communicators belong to "hot" societies (according to A. Assman), this probably requires a constant search for dialogue, striving for constructive communication, development of media communications in the modern information space.

The development of screen technologies has the most significant impact on the evolution of modern... more The development of screen technologies has the most significant impact on the evolution of modern media, the expansion and improvement of the quality of communication practices. The organization of a broadcast of the symbolic capital of the Urals can be released through the use of technologies that allow the screen language to be reproduced as a complex sign system. The authors attempt to identify a symbolic capital of the Urals territory by analyzing its coding in particular video materials. In addition, the study shows the results of young Russians (the "digital" generation) and mature (the "analogue" generation) identifying significant places, people and events based on the method of mental maps. The results show that the short videos perception of the "digital" generation of Russians is holistic and stable, in contrast to the "long format" of a documentary. This reduces the possibility of comprehending the message. The symbolic capital of the territories, which is constructed using traditional television technologies, is understood only by the "analogue" generation. New screen technologies (Time-lapse, aerial photography, video graphics) affect the symbolic capital assignment of the "digital" generation. The place identification codes of the "analogue" and the "digital" generations in Russia are different. The attachment to the territory is formed in the minds of young Russians, but not as a "land of severe culture". The members of the regional "digital community" share identification codes of the development scale, production power in the Soviet era, and participation in the achievements of culture and art nowadays.

Storytelling as a genre of narrative journalism has the potential of involvement, it facilitates the perception and holds the attention of "the digital youth". The organization of multimedia and transmedia narratives is considered as the basis for possibly effective intergenerational communication and the forming of "spiritual ties" (as said by the President of Russia V. Putin). The work reveals the values and constructed meanings in storytelling projects like "1917. Free history"and"1968.Digital", as well as the differences in their perception by the "analogue" and the "digital" generations. The results of the study show that representatives of both generations seem interested in the technological side of a storytelling called "1968". However, the younger generation demonstrates less interest towards another storytelling, "1917". Nevertheless, the projects' messages are mostly not read by the "digital" generation. The values broadcasted in "1968" are not accepted by the "analogue" generation. In addition, the constructed values in the mentioned storytelling do not comply with the political demands of Russia, which makes it doubtful that they are used to form "spiritual ties" between the Russians.

World of Media. Journal of Russian Media and Journalism Studies, 2021

In this paper, the concept of studying the specifics of digital communication between the older (... more In this paper, the concept of studying the specifics of digital communication between the older (analogue) and younger (digital) generations in Russia is proposed. The process of communication opens up the possibility of a perception of communicative and cultural memory by the digital generation, which is in the process of socialization and awareness of cultural identity. We suggest methodological development and the testing of research methods into the transformation of communicative and cultural memory and ways of its transmission from the analogue to the digital generation of Russians. The proposed scientific and practical concept assumes the development of three basic directions. The first is related to the study of the general process of transformation of syncretic communicative and cultural memory in the digital environment. The second involves the study and modelling of media texts.

MULTIMEDIA AND TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING FORMING "SPIRITUAL TIES" BETWEEN RUSSIAN GENERATIONS, 2019
