The new management system ISO 21001:2018: What and whyeducational organizations should adopt it

2018

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently published a new management system standard ISO 21001:2018. This standard outlines the requirements for educational organizations and is intended for such organizations than the more commonly used ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. This paper aims to compare both standards and study their similarities and differences to evaluate whether the new standard is more suitable for educational organizations. After employing qualitative analysis to directly compare the two standards in terms of breadth, depth and terminologies, it was found that while both standards use the same high-level structure, ISO 21001:2018 is broader and deeper than ISO 9001:2015 with more lower-level clauses. The terms used in the new standard are also very specific for education such as learner, curriculum, courses, learning outcomes, assessment, grades, etc. In addition, it also acknowledges that the customers of education are actively involve...

Critical Analysis of the Applicability of the ISO 9001 Standard in Higher Education Institutions

International Journal of African Higher Education

This paper analyses the applicability of the ISO 9001 standard in higher education institutions (HEIs). The ISO 9001standard, initially developed for application in industry, sets the requirements for implementing a quality management system (QMS) in an organisation. Over the years, the standard has been adapted to the higher education (HE) sector as a model for quality assurance and enhancement. In this study, the standard is analysed based on a framework with the following variables; 1) Importance of the philosophy of the standard in HE, 2) Suitability to HE, 3) Ease of implementation, 4) Effect on quality assurance and enhancement and 5) Effect on quality culture. The mechanisms of how the standard affects quality management are also presented. The analysis shows that ISO 9001 is based on a philosophy that resonates with general approaches to quality assurance in HEIs. The seven principles of the standard provide a good base for an effective QMS. The standard is suitable to HEIs ...

In order to conduct this study a questionnaire was the main research instrument. This research has been starting with a questionnaire which is same for service and manufacturing industries and designed on online "Google form application software". This questionnaire was distributed in service and manufacturing industries within Pakistan. Systematically the result of response were collected from Google drive sheet and analysis of the survey revealed that main barriers for implementing ISO 9001 are an absence of understanding the advantages of ISO 9001 confirmation, lack of involvement and empowerment of employees, lack of reward and motivation system, ineffective performance measurement system, lack of focus to implement PDCA (Plan/Do/Check/Act) cycle for continuous improvement, and lack of decision making on the base of collected data while the average of average responses shows that the most critical principle of quality management system are leadership and involvement of people.

Awareness and Challenges of ISO 9001:2015 Implementation in Higher Education

International Journal of Academe and Industry Research, 2022

This study assessed the awareness on the implementation of International Organization Standardization (ISO) 9001: 2015 in a university and the challenges encountered by the key stakeholders. It also tested the correlation of respondents' demographic profile to the level of awareness and challenges. The study used a descriptive research design and convenience sampling technique with a total of 100 survey participants from senior officials, professors, faculty, and non-faculty personnel. To collect responses, the study used structured survey questionnaire distributed through Google Forms. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count, percentage, and weighted mean as well as Spearman were used for data analysis. The results of the study showed that employees are 'Fully Aware' and 'Aware' on the implementation of ISO 9001:2015, particularly in terms of the quality mission, vision, and objectives. However, employees "Disagree" with the various challenges in the implementation of ISO 9001: 2015. In addition, there was no significant relationship among the respondents' profile, awareness and challenges in the implementation of ISO 9001: 2015 at the university. The study found that while university employees are usually aware of the quality management system's fundamental objectives, they normally disagree on the challenges of putting it into practice. For this, information dissemination should be done on a regular basis while the employees are obliged to also internalize the university's quality management system's vision, mission, and objectives.

Applying Theoretical-Methodological Tools for the Implementation of ISO 9001: 2015 Clause 4 Context of the Organization

Nowadays, in order to satisfy the ISO 9001: 2015 requirements, organizations access to information from web sites, consultant guides, Internet forums, books, and courses, as a first approximation, however, the quality, reliability, validity, and accuracy of the information content in these is limited. The research topic of this study is the use of theoretical methodological tools, whose implementation supports the organizations in the fulfillment of requirement 4 of ISO 9001: 2015, adapting it to their particular needs, minimizing rework in the documentation, increasing the motivation of the personnel involved and promoting well-being within the work environment. Some theoretical methodological tools were implemented in the case of Engineering laboratories of the Faculty of Higher Studies Aragón, that support and complement the teaching-learning process in the theoretical-practical subjects of the curricula of the engineering bachelor's degrees, providing students with practical training in the use of equipment, devices, and tools, as well as extracurricular courses. In the study participated the stakeholders of laboratories. From the results, it was observed that the time for the documentation of the quality management system was reduced using the theoretical tools proposed in this study. In conclusion, this study will thus be useful as a starting point in using formal tools for the implementation of ISO 9001: 2015 standard.
