Value Priorities of Teacher Candidates in Education Faculty of Pamukkale University in Denizli, Turkey

Eurasian Journal of Educational Research, 2016

Problem Statement: A behavior is only a conclusion of the values which we can easily see. So teaching attitudes of the teachers are affected by their values. The study of values therefore is fundamental to the study of teaching. If we can understand the values of the teachers we are able to estimate possible teaching behaviors of the teacher candidates. Then we can find which values of the students are barriers against their teaching abilities or not. Before graduating we can influence them by teaching them. We must try to change their values which are barriers to their teaching abilities and must support them about the values that will help them to teach. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to explore the terminal and instrumental values that contribute to the formation of value types of teacher candidates. Method: To measure the values of the teacher students, the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) was used. The population of this study includes 4856 students who attended the different departments of faculty of education. The data were collected from 498 students who were selected by a stratified random sampling technique. Questions guiding the study were: (1) What are the values of the education faculty students as future school teachers? (2) Are there any significant value differences between students who belong to various departments of the faculty? (3) Are the values affected by specific variables such as gender? Findings: Results indicated that 48% of female teacher candidates (156) and 41% of male teacher candidates (71) ranked family security terminal value as a supreme importance that guides their lives. When the teacher candidates are in their first three years of school, their first rank value preferences tend to be conservative values. However, when they reach the fourth class, their first rank value priorities shift to universal value type. All students except social sciences students preferred conservative values as primary values that direct their behaviors. Conclusion and Recommendations: According to the findings, both female and male students put conservative higher order value types. When they reach their fourth year, their first rank value priorities shift to universal value type. Students who are studying in the department of social sciences primarily preferred a universal value called “a world at peace.” It is necessary to develop universal values for teacher candidates’. International Journal of Criminology and Sociology, 2021

In this article's scientific space, one can observe the differentiation of the definition of the terms "value", "value orientations" because it does not yet have a clear standard definition. Many researchers have dealt with this topic, researched, analyzed, observed, and made conclusions. However, there is still a rich scope for research of such phenomena of personal structure as value orientations. Outstanding psychologists-researchers who, in their scientific, practical, and theoretical works, dealt with the topic of values and value orientations and came to the general conclusion that values are a structural component of a personality, with the help of which a person achieves a goal, sets this goal, and characterizes position in life. The article saw the relationship between values and the basic structures of the personality, including value orientationsconsidered in values a system of orientation and personality attitudes.

Teknik ve Mesleki Üniversitede Öğretim Kalitesini Etkileyen Faktörlerin Açıklanması

This study aimed to explain factors affecting quality of teaching and determine their impact on teaching quality. The mixed research approach and sequential exploratory strategy of classification model were used to collect the data. The population (qualitative method) consisted of staff at central organization of a technical and vocational university and top technicians and researchers of a technical and vocational university in 2011-2016; they were selected using mixed sampling (homogeneous and snowball) method. The population (quantitative method) also consisted of educational assistants, heads of research and education department, and faculty members in 2016. In qualitative study, the exploratory interviews and semi-structured interviews were used for collecting the data. In quantitative study, the identified categories which were derived from encoding qualitative data were used to create paired comparison questionnaires; they included factors affecting quality of teaching. Using Expert Choice Software, the results were analysed by AHP method. The findings indicated that the contribution of teacher, educational environment, and students were estimated to be 41, 33, and 26 percent, respectively. Among teacher components, the professional skills of teacher (weight 361 out of 1000) was determined to be the most important component; among student components, the academic records and experiences (weight 385 out of 1000) was determined to be the most important component; and among educational environment components, quality of environment and educational conditions (weight 341 out of 1000) was determined to be the most important component.
