Substance Abuse among the Urban Educated Youth: Causes and Consequence

Substance abuse among the young generation in the urban city area has been a great concern for decades and it is significantly different from the pattern of regular substance abuse. While regular substance abuser, in general, faces a certain amount of risk factors along with the absence of protective factors that make them prone to drug abuse, the young educated generation of urban area, despite of being educated and aware of the harmful effects of substance abuse, indulge themselves into drugs anyway by constructing a form of rationality and justification. Consequently, the existing national framework emphasizes on certain risk factors in general rather than investigating the structural and psychoanalytic reasoning behind the risk and protective factors for abusing the substances especially among the educated youth of the urban area which holds a significant proportion of substance abuse. This thesis studies the underlying causes behind the risk and protective factors of substance abuse which works as a structural system to initiate these factors as the effects rather than the causes of substance abuse among educated young generation of urban area. Dhaka, the only urban area by traditional definition, has faced a significant amount drug crisis in recent years and recently a proliferation of substance abuse is engulfing the young generation creating an epidemic of a drug crisis. Indeed the “Zero Tolerance” policy initiated by the government to cut down mainly the supply line of drugs which follows a similar tradition of War on Drugs by the South East Asian countries which didn’t see the light of significant success to control the problem of substance abuse rather violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by increasing the number extrajudicial killing. To make things even more complex, Bangladesh falls under the critical drug trafficking route which gives the country an uneven disadvantage to control the supply line. I argue that, the problem of substance abuse among the educated youth can’t be eradicated by emphasizing on supply reduction policy rather it needs to more emphasize on the demand reduction policies and to do that the policymaker needs to understand the structural paradigm and psychological factors that are responsible to create certain risk factors for initiating the substance abuse. I then apply this framework on urban educated young generation by using historical analysis, textual document analysis, statistical analysis and in-depth semi-structured interviewing. The thesis is organized into Seven Chapters which elucidate the type, pattern, stage, reasoning, and aftermath of substance abuse by underpinning the psychoanalytic and historical arguments of abusing substances along with theoretical and structural reasoning behind indulging into illicit substances. Finding and analysis show that psychological rationalization behind substance abuse always remains out of the discussion and as a result the demand reduction policies aren’t working effectively for controlling the demand for substance abuse. The present legal framework, which is to utmost responsible for focusing on the supply reduction strategy and less emphasizing on the demand and harm reduction strategy by not conducting rigorous academic research to understand the psyche of young generation along with the parochial structure of the society are mainly responsible for indulging the educated young generation of the capital to engage in activities like substance abuse.

The present findings suggest that the majority (67.67 %) of drug addicts think that drug addiction is high/very high, simultaneously 9.10% medium and 23.23% low/very low due to the influence of frustration, addicted parents and peer group in society.
