Antioxidant and phytochemical analysis of Ranunculus arvensis L. extracts

Ranunculus arvensis L. (R. arvensis) has long been used to treat a variety of medical conditions such as arthritis, asthma, hay fever, rheumatism, psoriasis, gut diseases and rheumatic pain. Here, we screened R. arvensis for antioxidant activity, phytochemical and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses. The chloroform, chloroform:methanol, methanol, methanol:acetone, acetone, methanol:water and water extracts of R. arvensis were examined for DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay, hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay, phosphomolybdenum assay, reducing power assay, flavonoid content, phenolic content and high performance liquid chromatography analysis. Screening of Ranunculus sceleratus for enzyme inhibition, antibacterial and antioxidant activities

Enzyme inhibition potential of various fractions of Ranunculus sceleratus was checked against α-glucosidase, butyrylcholinesterase, acetylcholinesterase and lipoxygenase enzymes. n-Butanol fraction showed very good activity (77.5 ± 1.0% inhibition at 0.1 mg/mL) against α-glucosidase. Its IC50 value was 35.7 ± 1.0 µg/mL comparable to quercetin (IC50 value 16.5 ± 0.4 µg/mL). Antibacterial activity was checked against five bacterial strains by 96-wells microplate assay using ciprofloxacin, a standard antibiotic. Chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous fractions showed excellent activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, (MIC at 7.1, 7.8, 5.6 and 5.3 respectively), which is greater than standard antibiotic ciprofloxacin (MIC 10.0). PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF AERIAL PARTS OF RANUNCULUS MURICATUS FOR THE PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVE COMPOUNDS
Phytochemical study for the pharmacological activity is an important segment of drug designing. This initial work establishes a foundation for product development. The pharmacological active compounds are finally developed into a pharmaceutical preparation. This is used in actual clinical and therapeutical practice to cure miscellaneous pathological problems. Thus; we have aimed this study for the extraction of compounds using two solvents of different polarities, so that maximum number of compounds can be extracted. Analytical technique used for the isolation and identification of the various compounds is thin layer chromatography. Phytochemical analysis of aerial parts showed the presence of Tannins, saponin and cardiac glycosides. Cardioactive glycosides, Tannin and saponin were reported in aerial parts of Ranunculus muricatus for the first time. Therefore Ranunculus muricatus can be used for further isolation and structural determination of cardioactive compounds.
In vitro Antimicrobial Activity of the Chemical Ingredients of Ranunculus hirtellus
The phytochemical study on the n-butanol fraction of Ranunculus hirtellus led to the first time isolation of four known constituents (1-4).The antimicrobial and enzyme inhibition activities of these four constituents isolated from Ranunculus hirtellus are presented in this study. These constituents were screened against two human Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus) and four Gram-negative ones (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella Pneumoniae) by using Agar well diffusion method for both antibacterial and antifungal activities. MIC was determined by Agar well dilution method. MBC was performed by viable cell count method. Antimicrobial and Synergistic Studies of Ranunculus Muricatus L. Against Some Indigenous Bacteria

In the present study, antibacterial activity of the whole plant methanolic extract of Ranunculus muricatus L., was analyzed against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Bacillus pumilus, Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeroginosa. Methanol was regarded as an excellent solvent for antimicrobial activity. It was observed as best bactericidal at a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1-10 µg/ml against all the bacterial cultures viz. B. pumilus, B. subtilis, S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeroginosa and S. typhimurium. Synergistic antibacterial activity of methanolic extracts was tested with respect to solvent extract of leaves of Ricinus communis, Nerium oleander, Withania somnifera, whole plant of Heliotropiaum curassavicum and fruits of Citrullus colocynthis. Synergistical study revealed the best antibacterial activity against B. subtilis and B. pumilus at a level of 1 µg/ml except E. coli and S. aureus.

Wheat is one of the most important cultivated crops in Pakistan. The present studies report the weed flora of medicinal importance associated with Wheat in district Lahore. A total of 22 angiospermic species belonging to 15 families were found growing in association with Wheat. Maximum number of species (6) belonged to family Asteraceae. After completing interviews and literature survey of different medicinal weed of wheat field, Ranunculus muricatus was selected to determine its phytochemical and pharmacological activity. It was selected on the basis of previous phytochemical and pharmacological work done and the easily availability of the weed.
Antimicrobial activity of five constituents isolated from Ranunculus muricatus

Antimicrobial activity of five compounds isolated from Ranunculus muricatus, namely, Tricin7-O-β-Dlucopyranoside (1), protocatechuyl aldehide (2), isoscopoletin (3), anemonin (4), Β-sitoseterol (5) were tested against two human Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus) and four Gram-negative ones (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella Pneumoniae). All the five compounds isolated, were tested against the fungal strain Aspergilus niger. The structures of the compounds have been confirmed by EIS, HR-EIMS and 1 H-13 C-NMR spectroscopic methods. The antimicrobial activities were performed by agar well diffusion method. MIC and MBC were carried out by agar dilution method and viable cell count method, respectively. Compound 1 showed maximum antimicrobial activities while the other compounds also showed superior antimicrobial activities. These compounds were isolated first time from R. muricatus which are persuasive as standard antimicrobial drugs.
Ranunculus Sericeus Banks & Sol. Extract Fractions Possess Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity

Ranunculus sericeus, collected from Agri, was successively extracted with n-hexane, chloroform, acetone and methanol, in a Soxhlet extractor. Obtained extracts were tested for antibacterial activity against human and plant pathogenic bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vitians, Enterobacter cloacae, Burkholderia sepasia, Pantoea ananatis, and for antifungal activity against fungi Rhizoctonia sp ., Alternaria sp., and Fusarium sp. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values were determined. Our results indicate that acetone and methanol fractions have moderate antibacterial and antifungal activity.
