The issues of authorship and copyright have never been so
discussed as they are now, since the possibilities provided by digital
media enabled the resignification of products through remixing. The
objective of this paper is to discuss remixing as an authorship practice
in the creation of memes that appropriate Bette Davis’s image in
Facebook’s page “Diva Depressão”. 65 memes were collected, and
4 of them were selected for a multimodal analysis, in which text and
image interact enabling the multiplication of meanings. The results show
that the producers of these memes appropriate the memory created
by Davis’ roles and re-signified her image to satirize everyday actions.

position. On one level, they explored the political potential certain commercial
cinematic conventions held. At the same time, they reinforced traditional
gender hierarchies that consumer culture was challenging by consistently celebrating
male-centered genres like the biopic over female-centered ones like the costume
drama.
