In the current economic challenge, methods to accurately predict system failure has become a holy grail in maintenance with the goal to reduce the cost of unavailability due to unscheduled shutdown. This has led to the current research with the aim to achieve a more accurate fault diagnosis for rotating machinery using a neural network (NN) with principal component analysis (PCA) as a pre-processing step to fuse multiple sensor data. The multisensor data fusion has been proven to improve the fault detection ability for machinery compared to single source condition monitoring. In this paper, an NN-based methodology is presented, where PCA is applied as preprocessing step to detect the rotating machinery faults during operation. The effectiveness of the proposed model is illustrated by a case study on two shaft industrial gas turbine where the real-time performance monitoring data collected from the plant and used to train and test the proposed algorithm. The analysis results show tha...

We report the results of a transcript finishing initiative, undertaken for the purpose of identifying and characterizing novel human transcripts, in which RT-PCR was used to bridge gaps between paired EST clusters, mapped against the genomic sequence. Each pair of EST clusters selected for experimental validation was designated a transcript finishing unit (TFU). A total of 489 TFUs were selected for validation, and an overall efficiency of 43.1% was achieved. We generated a total of 59,975 bp of transcribed sequences organized into 432 exons, contributing to the definition of the structure of 211 human transcripts. The structure of several transcripts reported here was confirmed during the course of this project, through the generation of their corresponding full-length cDNA sequences. Nevertheless, for 21% of the validated TFUs, a full-length cDNA sequence is not yet available in public databases, and the structure of 69.2% of these TFUs was not correctly predicted by computer prog...

This paper examines the differences between student performance on two separate measures, the Spatial Visualization portion of the "Differential Aptitude Test" and the "Geometry Content Knowledge Test." Results from the hybrid quantitative/qualitative study indicate that although there were no differences in performance on spatial visualization for males and females or across ethnicities, differences in performance on geometry content knowledge tasks for ethnicity were evident. In this paper, we present the results of one aspect of a multinational, multi-institutional study of computer programming students. Specifically, this paper reports on an exploration of relationships between novice programmers' map-drawing styles (landmark, route or survey) and success in a first programming course at tertiary level. Relationships were found between map-drawing style and success of students in introductory programming'courses, but there were mediating factors that resulted in some mixed ...

The Advanced CANDU Reactor or the ACRTM is developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to be the next step in the evolution of the CANDU product line. It is based on the proven CANDU technology and incorporates advanced design technologies. Two standard designs of the ACR are developed: ACR-1000 and ACR-700. The ACR is designed to incorporate the latest advances in design and construction techniques and to be cost competitive while achieving higher safety and performance standards. This paper describes the methodology of the seismic qualification of the ACR reactor buildings. The ACR standard plant is conservatively qualified for a design basis earthquake with peak horizontal ground acceleration of 0.3g and for a wide range of soil/rock foundation conditions. The input design ground response spectra address current technical issues such as earthquake input motions with high frequency content and near field effects. The structural behavior of the ACR-700 reactor building unde...

To be in love is to create a religion whose god is fallible.1 –André Maurois If a machine is expected to be infallible, it cannot also be intelligent.2 –Alan Turing Amore e ‘l cor gentil sono una cosa (Love and a gentle heart are but one thing).3 –Dante Alighieri The history of the concept of love is linked to physicalistic descriptions of its chemistry and biology or to a transcendental plane of ideas thus leaving it cloaked in an enigma. My attempt here is to redescribe love’s traditional enigma in terms of its ‘black box,’ namely, through examining the computability of love in reference to Alan Turing’s work on intelligent machines and its analysis in an alternative way to the anthropocentric conception of love. I will discuss Turing and P-Type (pain and pleasure) and B-Type (brain) Machines; love, computability and free will; computation and concepts of the sublime in relation to love; and black boxism and computational transcendentalism.

The purpose of the research study described in this paper was to investigate the effectiveness of using LEGO Mindstorms robotic activities to influence student motivation in an introductory university computer programming course. Various aspects relating to student motivation were measured using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. Tests revealed no statistically significant differences between groups in relation to intrinsic goal orientation, task value, control of learning beliefs, self-efficacy, and test anxiety at the alpha = .05 level. The experiment did detect a statistically significant difference between groups in relation to extrinsic goal orientation. The LEGO group, however, showed a larger decrease in levels of extrinsic goal orientation, suggesting they were less motivated in learning the material for rewards such as grades. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, ideally a decline in extrinsic goal orientation would be accompanied by a statistically ...

SUMMARY: The paper presents a method to calculate the moisture penetration depth and the undisturbed moisture level, inside the region of periodic variation, in a porous material subjected to a periodic relative humidity variation at the boundary. The moisture properties may be highly non-linear. The method is strictly valid for a semi-infinite material. The theory to determine the undisturbed moisture level is given in detail, and a calculation method to determine the penetration depth is presented. A specially designed computer program has been developed. Results for six different building materials subjected to daily and annual periodic relative humidity at the boundary are given. Fig. 1 illustrates the solution for a periodic variation at the boundary. The relative humidity varies between a maximum (70%) and a minimum value (30%) during the period time tp (24hours). The curves in the Fig. 1 are the moisture distribution at different times (tp, tp/4, tp/2, 3tp/4) during the time ...
