Imaging techniques for geophysic prospection of sea bottom are extremely demanding in terms of mathematical methods and computational resources (8). This is because the measurements are going deeper than before, thus making the structures identification a hard task, a nd the datasets to be com- puted huge. Besides, the current trend is to analyze the images in three dimensions (3D) (4), adding an extra difficulty to the process. Currently, the prospection process is h ighly automatized by computer programs, where these programs not only implement and solve the mathematical model, but also carry the burden of the datasets manipulation, particularly in pre and post proces sing. All of these demands (complex mathematical models to be solved and huge datasets to be manipulated) lead us to high per- formance computing (HPC) environments, which are mainly available by supercomputers composed by thousands of computational nodes, thus efficient parallelization of those c omputer programs is...

The authors discuss the overall structural design of a self-contained hydraulic six-legged machine, called MECANT I, which has been constructed for studying possible applications of legged vehicles in natural environments, like forests. First, the main mechanical solutions and control hardware of the machine are presented. The systematic approach to the motion planning of a legged vehicle and some algorithmical features are discussed. The special features of the leg control are presented. The use of a simulator in the design work is discussed, and the main principles of the control software structure, which supports fast software design and testing, are presented. Some continuing research topics and the present situation are discussed

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of MultiFunk, a computer program designed to assist reading, on the reading and spelling proficiency of struggling readers. Fifty‐two below‐average readers and spellers, in grades 5, 6 and 7, were randomly assigned as experimental and control groups (N = 26 + 26). In addition, 114 classmates, who read normally, were included to compare changes in basic literacy development during the intervention. A pre‐test, intervention, post‐test, control‐group design was used to evaluate the effects of the software, using texts to suit the pupils’ own choices and interests. The findings indicate that computerized assistive reading has the potential to aid and support the development of basic literacy skills in a broad group of struggling readers and spellers. Issues concerning the MultiFunk text‐to‐speech technology are discussed.

The first step has been taken in the effort to develop a microscopic simulation model of mixed motor vehicle and bicycle traffic over an entire network. The primary objective was to develop the main algorithm of BICycle SIMulator and translate it into a working computer program. To achieve the goal, the gaps in the existing literature were filled by data collected at the University of Delaware campus in Newark. An equation of mixed bicycle and motor vehicle following was developed and used for the representation of longitudinal interaction of vehicles. The program was implemented in C+plus; programming language and tested on real-world data. The resulting software is the first in the world to allow the inclusion of bicyclists in the analysis of urban transportation by the means of microscopic simulation.

Background: A subset of patients with schizophrenia, defined on the basis of longitudinal deficits in self-care, may show a classic (“Kraepelinian”) degenerative course. An independent validator of the phenomenologically defined Kraepelinian subtype might be provided by a structural indicator of possible brain degeneration: ventricular size as measured by computed tomography (CT).Methods: To examine whether Kraepelinian patients would show a differential increase in ventricular size over time, two CT scans were conducted at intervals separated by >4 years, an average of 5 years. Fifty-three male patients with DSM-III-R diagnoses of chronic schizophrenia were subdivided into Kraepelinian (n = 22; mean age = 42 ± 8.6 years) and non-Kraepelinian (n = 31; mean age = 38 ± 12.2 years) subgroups. Kraepelinian patients were defined on the basis of longitudinal criteria: >5 years of complete dependence on others for life necessities and care, lack of employment, and sustained symptomatology. Thirteen normal elderly volunteers (mean age = 60 ± 17.8) were also scanned at 4-year intervals. CT measurements were made by raters without knowledge of subgroup membership. A semiautomated computer program was used to trace the anterior horn, lateral ventricles, and temporal horns for each slice level on which they were clearly seen. Results: The ventricles showed a bilateral increase in size over the 4-year interval in the Kraepelinian subgroup, more marked in the left hemisphere than the right. By contrast, neither the non-Kraepelinian subgroup nor the normal volunteers showed significant CT changes from scan 1 to scan 2.Conclusions: Thus, the longitudinal dysfunctions in self-care that characterize the Kraepelinian patients were associated with an independent indicator of brain abnormality.

Purpose – To explore the use of LexiURL as a Web intelligence tool for collecting and analysing links to digital libraries, focusing specifically on the National electronic Library for Health (NeLH). Design/methodology/approach – The Web intelligence techniques in this study are a combination of link analysis (web structure mining), web server log file analysis (web usage mining), and text analysis (web content mining), utilizing the power of commercial search engines and drawing upon the information science fields of bibliometrics and webometrics. LexiURL is a computer program designed to calculate summary statistics for lists of links or URLs. Its output is a series of standard reports, for example listing and counting all of the different domain names in the data. Findings – Link data, when analysed together with user transaction log files (i.e., Web referring domains) can provide insights into who is using a digital library and when, and who could be using the digital library if...

A user manual may provide instructions that, if the user follows them, achieve any of certain objectives as determined by the manual designers. A manual may therefore be viewed rather like a computer program, as pre-planned instructions. Accordingly, software engineering and its methods may be applied mutatis mutandis to the manual and its design process. We consider structured programming methods,

One of the major problems currently facing satellite-based positioning is the atmospheric refraction of the GPS signal caused by the troposphere. The tropospheric effect is much more pronounced at the equatorial region due to its hot and wet conditions. This affects the GPS signal due to the variability of the refractive index, which in turn affects the positional accuracy, especially in the height components. This paper presents a study conducted in the Southern Peninsular Malaysia located at the equatorial region, to investigate the impact of tropospheric delay on GPS height variation. Four campaigns were launched with each campaign lasting for three days. The Malaysian real-time kinematic GPS network (MyRTKnet) reference stations in Johor Bahru were used. GPS RINEX data from these stations were integrated with ground meteorological data observed concurrently from a GPS station located at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), at varying antenna heights for each session of obser...

We show that one can formulate an algebra with lattice ordering so as to contain one quantum and five classical operations as opposed to the standard formulation of the Hilbert space subspace algebra. The standard orthomodular lattice is embeddable into the algebra. To obtain this result we devised algorithms and computer programs for obtaining expressions of all quantum and classical operations within an orthomodular lattice in terms of each other, many of which are presented in the paper. For quantum disjunction and conjunction we prove their associativity in an orthomodular lattice for any triple in which one of the elements commutes with the other two and their distributivity for any triple in which a particular element commutes with the other two. We also prove that the distributivity of symmetric identity holds in Hilbert space, although whether or not it holds in all orthomodular lattices remains an open problem, as it does not fail in any of over 50 million Greechie diagrams...
