The national liquid sanitation program is increasingly demanding an increase in the rate of wastewater treatment to protect the environment on the one hand and to promote the reuse of treated wastewater on the other. Indeed, purification generates clean, purified water that can be discharged without any problem into the receiving environment or ready for reuse. However, a fairly large quantity of waste sludge is generated, which must have an environmental and economic outlet. The most appropriate technique for the sustainable management of sewage sludge in Morocco and its reuse in agriculture. The study concerns the characterization and valorization of wastewater sludge from wastewater treatment plants in Morocco. This study consists in establishing an inventory of the different systems and types of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Morocco and estimating the quantity of sludge produced using the GIS modeling tool.

Aphanius iberus is an endangered cyprinodontid of which scarce populations are distributed along the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. In the southeast of the peninsula, salt exploitation wetlands are a priority habitat for conservation of the species. The objective of this study was to check possible effects of extractive management in a salt exploitation (Marchamalo wetland, Mar Menor) on condition of the species during a two-year period (May 2000 – June 2002). 2612 individuals were captured in 28 monthly samplings and processed in situ (sex, total length: TL), and a sub-sampling of 997 individuals was processed in the laboratory to obtain eviscerated weight (EW). Temporal cycle of somatic condition was studied by standardized residuals from TL-EW relationships. Hipersalinity episodes due to extractive management were detected and they appeared to be correlated with diminished somatic condition. In short, extractive management with no biological criteria produces delet...

This paper presents a new application of mathematical morphology (MM) operators for low speed slew bearing condition monitoring. The MM operators were used as a signal processing step and feature extraction method for bearing vibration signals. Four basic MM operators; erosion, dilation, closing and opening, were studied. This paper also investigates another potential MM operator, namely gradient operator. Two common time domain features in bearing condition monitoring, namely root mean square (RMS) and kurtosis, were extracted from the processed signal. The study shows that the changes in bearing condition can be clearly detected from the extracted features (RMS and kurtosis) of the MM operators compared to RMS and kurtosis features extracted from the original vibration signal. The application of the method is demonstrated with laboratory run-to-failure slew bearing data acquired on a daily basis.

Male tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) territory owners and floaters were compared in terms of size and nutritional condition to test the resource holding potential hypothesis. Owners were larger than floaters when compared using six morphological measurements. There were no differences in dry mass, ash, or fat content, but territory owners were heavier and had larger protein reserves than floaters. Territory owners may be those individuals who win intrasexual conflicts for the possession of nest boxes, or those who, because of their better nutritional condition, can arrive at the breeding grounds earlier to secure a territory.
