This study aims to identify (i) how EFL graduate-level students at various Turkish universities regard the level of difficulty in terms of the different sections of a scholarly work in their academic writing practices, (ii) whether their perceptions concerning the difficulty of the various sections show a significant difference depending on their demographics, (iii) the solutions they employ when they are challenged with difficulties in academic writing and (iv) their views about the process of academic writing in general. Data from 34 graduate EFL students were reported. The study adopted a mixed-method research design, and the data were collected with Academic Literacies Questionnaire (ALQ) (Chang, 2006; Evans & Green, 2007). The participants also responded to open-ended questions about the challenges they face in academic writing and their solutions. The results revealed that EFL graduate students had problems with academic conventions, and found expressing themselves succinctly problematic. However, they were familiar with the mechanics of the target language.

Background: Evidence suggests that copy-pasted components of electronic notes may not reliably reflect the care delivered. Federal agencies have raised concerns that such components may be used to justify inappropriately inflated claims for reimbursement. It is not known whether copied information is used to justify higher evaluation and management (E&M) charges. Methods: This retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the relationship between the level of evaluation and management (E&M) charges and the method of documentation (none, distinct or copied) of lifestyle counseling (diet, exercise and weight loss) for patients with diabetes mellitus. To determine the association, an ordered multinomial logistic regression model that corrected for clustering within individual providers and patients and adjusted for patient and encounter characteristics was utilized. E&M charge level served as the primary outcome variable. Patients were included if they were followed by primary care physicians affiliated with two academic hospitals for a minimum of two years between 01/01/2000 and 12/13/2009. Results: Lifestyle counseling was documented in 65.4% of 155,168 primary care encounters of 16,164 patients. Copied counseling was identified in 12,527 encounters. In multivariable analysis higher E&M charges were associated with older patient age, longer notes, treatment with insulin, medication changes and acute complaints. However, copied lifestyle counseling was associated with a decrease of 70.5% in the odds of higher E&M charge levels when time spent on counseling (required to justify higher charges based on counseling) was recorded (p<0.0001). This finding is opposite to what would have been expected if the impetus for copied documentation of lifestyle counseling was an increase in submitted E&M charges. Conclusion: There is no evidence that copied documentation of lifestyle counseling is used to justify higher evaluation and management charges. Higher charges were generally associated with indicators of complexity of care.

The use of technology as a medium of instruction necessary in the 21st century classroom. However, there exists an inter-generational digital divide between students, who are digital natives being more adept with the use of technology and teachers who are digital immigrants. This qualitative case study explored the challenges of digital immigrant English teachers in teaching digital native learners. Specifically, it answered the following research questions: (a) What are the challenges of digital immigrant English teachers in teaching digital native learners? (b) How do digital immigrant English teachers cope with the challenges in teaching digital native learners? The purposively chosen participants were three private and three public school digital immigrant English teachers with ages ranging from 30-50 years old. The findings of this study showed that digital immigrant English teachers considered social media as a distraction in learners’ studies and they also experienced with t...

This study was aimed to examining EFL students’ perception towards plagiarism, factors triggering students to plagiarize in completing their undergraduate theses and their strategies in avoiding plagiarism. The study, conducted at English Language Education Department, in one of the universities in Indonesia, employed a qualitative method approach aiming at getting more information and a detailed description of social or human issues. Ten alumni who were randomly selected agreed to participate in this study. Selected participants were interviewed to collect required information needed to address research questions of this study. Besides interviewing the students, the researchers also analyzed their theses in order to examine the level of plagiarism by using Turnitin software, the result of which showed that the range of similarities index in students’ theses varied from 16 to 36 %. The findings of the study revealed that there were three strategies that students implemented to avoid...

Paper is describing newly developed anti-plagiarism software tool (APST) which is specially focused on MS Word documents using three types of meta-data: 1. hidden information included unintentionally, 2. selected sorted salient words, 3. length of sentences in words. Results evaluating submission of 100 papers showed that it can be used for pre-selection for full-text side-by-side comparison of only few submitted papers. APST creates also statistics and database type fingerprints (signatures) of documents. Problems of setting up initial weight coefficient and improving speed performance require more work or cooperation, which this paper is calling for.

This paper explores hyperreal spatial experiences produced through the dialectics of original and copy in terms of object, atmosphere, and public space. It focuses on two collaborative projects by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), namely Danish Expo Pavilion and Superkilen Urban Park; yet begins by unpacking the authenticity of Denmark’s national symbol, the Little Mermaid Statue - a continuous target of vandalism.

The idea of exhibiting academic integrity is not a recent phenomenon when academics and researchers have been expressing fury against any kind of academic theft worldwide. The strolling of internet, since its inception, appeared as the best blessing of all the technological innovations which has created the threat of content theft simultaneously among the faculty members, researchers and students. Research substantiates that students in higher education are mostly keen to copy-paste in written assignments or take-home exams without following proper referencing system. Sometime, students attempt to cite and refer the source of their writings, but they fail to paraphrase or summarize intellectual properties appropriately. In Bangladesh, it is often uttered that most of the higher education students are victim of this ill practice. Idea stealing, improper citation and referencing lead a student to copy-paste and to, somehow, manage a deadline. Creating new knowledge what it is called the purpose of coming to a higher education institution; but is it actually the scenario globally in general and Bangladesh in particular? Easy access to the sources at present, reluctance of students to devote themselves in the challenging mission of creating, lack of authentic and dominant tool to check plagiarism (though some web checkers like turnitin have been contributing a lot) are the main reasons behind this curse of copy-paste. This paper attempts to analyze the present scenario of plagiarism checking practices worldwide, to compare those with that of Bangladesh and to provide future directions for reducing the practices; and thus answering question of the title of this paper.

The paper examines patterns of relatedness in exchanges built by the video responses to one of YouTube "Most Responded" videos. The analysis shows the presence of a diversified range of patterns, as a result of the interactants' creative use of the video response option, which affords text-production through copy-and-paste. The results trace a continuum from fully cohesive and coherent exchanges to exchanges presenting no clues of relatedness, with a great variation in-between the two poles. Videos often respond incoherently, disregarding the meaning, diverting from the topic or foregrounding a background element of the video they respond to. In other cases, responses are created through the reuse of previously made texts, so that their recontextualization reconfigures or scatters cohesive ties, producing a marked implicitness in the exchange. Interactants accept (and at times praise) incoherent and non-cohesive semiotic chains thus acknowledging and reinforcing emerging conventions in video-interaction. Interaction through videos seems driven by the participants' interested reinterpretation, transformation, and recontextualization of texts, thus shaping distinctively the requirements for successful communication in the semiotic space.

The volume comprised of 16 essays by a group of internationally acclaimed authors strives to contribute to a clearer perception of the complex facets of Jacob Jordaens’ oeuvre – and moreover to distinguish it from the works of Rubens, van Dyck, and his contemporaries. The title ‘Genius of Grand Scale’ refers to the spectrum from history to genre as well as to Jordaens’ preference for large formats. Tribute must also be paid to the greatness of the artist Jacob Jordaens, since even the fact that he outlived Rubens for four whole decades did not enable him to escape from under his shadow. By reference to iconographic and iconological studies not only single works are identified and presented in a broad review, but also the long, in many aspects fragmentary reception of his artistic work forms a large part of the interpretations presented here. Furthermore, technical examinations of paintings assist in defining more precisely how the paintings were generated.

Web-plagiarism is like a dangerous virus, affecting high-schools and universities, all over the World. It is also, in the author's opinion, one major risk of the transition from traditional teaching systems to e-learning. This paper analyses Web-plagiarism as a perennial temptation for students, and a continual challenge for teachers, who ask the question: "How could it be detected, and avoided?". This attempt to find the answer to that question is based on the author's teaching experience in Computer Science, giving some examples and discussing methods and a few devoted IT tools for plagiarism detection.
