Why is it that we then all go to dark rooms to collectively commune over empathizing with fictional characters, as we do when watching films? Specifically, there have been few cultural touchstones to cause as much discussion and communing in the past ten years as Marvels' Avengers series and the film industry as a whole!

Microperforated films (perforation diameter <200 lm) are an option for achieving the appropriate gaseous composition in modified atmosphere packaging, especially for fresh-cut products. In this project, static techniques were used to experimentally measure the oxygen and carbon dioxide transmission rates of microperforated films. Twenty nine microperforations of different dimensions (from 40 Â 30 lm to 350 Â 110 lm) and thickness (from 29 to 57 lm) were tested in the project. A potential equation was found to provide a good prediction of the dependence of the O 2 and CO 2 transmission rates on the perforation area. The data predicted by the equation was compared with those from five other bibliographic models. The empirical equation agrees, within the experimental range, with the modified Fick's law (considering the total diffusive pass length of a perforation as the sum of the perforation length and end correction term). The predictions of the proposed equation for thicker films and holes of larger dimensions (equivalent radius >3000 lm) correspond to those of the empirical models.

In this book, Nariman Skakov explores the phenomenon of spatio-temporal lapse in Tarkovsky's cinema - from 'Ivan's Childhood' (1962) to 'Sacrifice' (1986). He argues that dreams, visions, mirages, memories, revelations, reveries, and delusions are phenomena which present alternative spatio-temporal patterns; they disrupt the linear progression of events and create narrative discontinuity. Each chapter is dedicated to the discussion of one of Tarkovsky's seven feature films and, in each, one of these phenomena functions as a refrain. Skakov discusses the influence of the flow of and lapses in space and time on the viewer's perception of the Tarkovskian cinematic universe. He opens and closes his original and fascinating book on Tarkovsky's cinema by focusing on the phenomenon of time that was discussed extensively by the filmmaker in his main theoretical treatise 'Sculpting in Time,' as well as in a number of interviews and public lectures.

Research and critical studies into men and masculinity has originated as one of the most emerging areas of sociological investigation. More books and articles have been published on this study area alone as well as the introduction of two specialized journals and the creation of several websites all providing different explanations of their understanding of men and masculinity at the millennium age. Masculinity is an area of sociology that has, since the mid-1950s, drawn on many theories, including structural functionalism, Marxism, psychoanalysis, critical structuralism, and more recently, post-structuralism and theories of the post-modern (Whitehead & Barrett, 2001). Within popular culture, the media have also come across the perceived 'crisis of masculinity' in Western cultures – newspapers, documentaries and talk shows have increasingly pondered the changing meaning of manhood in our modern age (Alsop et al, 2002). The purpose of this writing is to understand men and masculinity in the modern world putting into consideration the sociology of masculinity, the social construction of masculinity, the crisis within masculinity as well as a fair contrast with masculinity and feminism.

Realism is not a set category, but an approach to depicting reality. Stories can be mythic, social, or psychological. Understanding these three forms and approaches to realism can help you define your work as a writer.

In 1998, in a paper in which he explained the mechanisms used in Hollywood to divide the revenue generated by feature films among different stakeholders, Mark Weinstein (1998) argued that only ten to twenty percent of these projects actually were showing a positive figure under the heading “net profits”. Ten years later, the United Nations (2998) also acknowledged that; as it was widely recognized, yet without mentioning any empirical study that might corroborate the use of such a precise figure, only 20 percent of movies were making a profit. Moreover, as this report informed, the surplus generated by these extremely successful projects was so large that it offset the cumulated losses generated by the remaining 80 percent of feature films. The implications of the existence of uncontested and long lasting belief about the high risks that companies in the filmmaking business have to face and overcome, should not to be neglected: when policy makers accept that the outcome of a movie is highly unpredictable and the gap in terms of income between a success and a failure can be substantial, they are also more inclined to accept concentration in this sector as a way to reduce risk and increase investments. Epstein‟s book “The Hollywood Economist: The Hidden Financial Reality Behind the Movies” does not reveal what percentage of feature film is likely to pass the break-even point, nor it denies that filmmaking can be a risky business in financial terms. The main contribution to knowledge from this book comes from his explanation of the financial practices of the producers-distributors that are now part of the largest info-entertainment conglomerates and are the descendent of the major Hollywood studios (i.e. the „Majors‟). After reading this book, the reader will understand that making movies for these companies and for the conglomerates they are part of, is a rather stable, low-risk and very profitable activity.

The Wesleyan Film series takes a back-tobasics approach to the art of cinema. Books in the series deal with the formal, the historical, and the cultural-putting a premium on visual analysis, close readings, and an understanding of the history of Hollywood and international cinema, both artistically and industrially. The volumes are rigorous, critical, and accessible both to academics and to lay readers with a serious interest in film.

Diffusion coefficient Lipid oxidation Whole milk powder a b s t r a c t Antioxidant active packaging is a promising technology for whole milk powder (WMP) protection. In this study, the migration of a-tocopherol from a multilayer active packaging (made of high density polyethylene, ethylene vinyl alcohol and a layer of low density polyethylene containing the antioxidant) to WMP was studied. A model based on the Fick's diffusion equation was used to calculate the diffusion coefficients (D) of a-tocopherol as 2.34 Â 10 À11 , 3.06 Â 10 À11 , and 3.14 Â 10 À11 cm 2 s À1 at 20, 30 and 40°C, respectively. The D at 20°C was different from those at 30 and 40°C (P < 0.05); but it was similar at 30 and 40°C. This low influence of temperature on the migration of a-tocopherol from 20 to 40°C assures the release at real storage and commercialization conditions in regions with warm/hot climate. The antioxidant delivering system delayed the lipid oxidation of WMP and it was more effective at 30 and 40°C since the rate of oxidative reactions was higher at these temperatures than at 20°C.

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy has been applied to investigate surface structures of an amphiphilic surface-active block copolymer (SABC) film deposited on a CaF 2 substrate, in air and in water in situ. Developed as a surface-active component of an antifouling coating for marine applications, this amphiphilic triblock copolymer contains both hydrophobic fluorinated alkyl groups as well as hydrophilic ethoxy groups. It was found that surface structures of the copolymer film in air and in water cannot be probed directly using the SFG experimental geometry we adopted because SFG signals can be contributed from the polymer/air (or polymer/water) interface as well as the buried polymer/CaF 2 substrate interface. Using polymer films with varied thicknesses, structural information about the polymer surfaces in air and in water can be deduced from the detected SFG signals. With SFG, surface restructuring of this polymer has been observed in water, especially the methyl and methylene groups change orientations upon contact with water. However, the hydrophobic fluoroalkyl group was present on the surface in both air and water, and we believe that it was held near the surface in water by its neighboring ethoxy groups.

The unprecedented economic growth and immigration that Ireland experienced between 1995 and 2007 did not only challenge national but also ethnic, social, and gender identities. The contributions to this volume explore how films tackle these challenges and help to make sense of Ireland’s altered position in a globalised world. Among the films discussed are some of the most critically acclaimed Irish films of recent years, including Once (2006), Adam & Paul (2004), Garage (2007), and The Secret of Kells (2009), as well as the work of Oscar-winning director and writer Neil Jordan. The volume is completed by an extensive interview with award-winning director Lenny Abrahamson, and his collaborator, screenwriter and actor Mark O’Halloran.

This article examines Swedish migrant women to the United States. It asks how racially privileged European migrants adapt to US racial and gender hierarchies that require them to relinquish their economic security and gender autonomy in a neoliberal state? Drawing upon interviews and focus group discussions with 33 Swedish women and three of their spouses, and participant observation between 2006 and 2008 in a network for Swedish speaking women living in the US, the article discusses how a group of 'white' migrant women who arrive in the US with an ideology of gender egalitarianism negotiate a more socially conservative and economically vulnerable lifestyle, as the wives (and potential ex-wives) of upper-middle-class men. The article argues that while Swedish women benefit from their racial and social privileges in the US they lose their sense of economic security, acquiring new anxieties that make them reluctant to renounce their Swedish citizenship which they conceive of as a 'flexible' resource.

Perhaps it is telling that on the day that Steve Jobs (Danny Boyle, 2015) was released in the UK, so too was Tangerine (Sean Baker, 2015), which tells the story of transgender sex workers in Los Angeles. For, if the former film charts the rise to success of the entrepreneur behind various of the Apple products that now flood the world market, the latter film was made using one of Jobs’ best known products, the iPhone.

Arrangements of cationic starches hydrophobized by acetylation (CS-acet) deposited from aqueous electrolyte solutions onto hydrophilized and hydrophobized silica surfaces were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurements. The influence of electrolyte composition, acetylation degree of cationic starch (DS ACET ), and deposition method was examined. On a hydrophobic substrate, CS-acet formed an open film with structure strongly dependent on DS ACET and electrolyte composition of the solution. On a hydrophilic substrate, acetylation increased the hydrophobicity of the film when the starch was deposited by adsorbing. When deposition was made by spin coating, i.e., the CS-acet was forced onto the substrate, the hydrophobic tuning by acetylation was lost. The films deposited by spin coating were thicker and considerably rougher than those deposited by adsorbing.

We have employed computer-aided furnace design and process simulation to optimize the conditions under which single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) may be grown in high yields on 4 in. wafers for electronic device applications. Hydrokinetic simulations were performed to obtain optimized furnace structures and process conditions in terms of gas flow, temperature, and gas speed. Shower head structures and a flow isolation barrier were installed in an experimental 6 in. furnace, as suggested by the hydrokinetic simulations. To ensure clean surfaces and uniform catalyst islands, catalyst patterns were lifted off using Au films or polydimethylsiloxane. Photolithography was used to fabricate field-effect transistors with SWCNTs grown on 4 in. wafer substrates. The total yield of the nanotube devices increased from 30.5% to 96.4% after optimization.

ABSTRACT This article takes as its object of study "Producers Association of Settlement Corral Bois"-APACB, the municipality of Simon Day / SE. Seeks to understand how associative practices involved in the process of identity formation of ethnic-racial members. The research is exploratory and theoretical approach considers the qualitative dimension. Meanwhile, it was found that the APACB is a success in terms of the possibilities of identifying the population of the Settlement Corral Bois, because this model of collective organization installed in community farmers became owners of their land, their home and his family. The results are partial and will serve to further analysis later, secured by theoretical and methodological possibilities that were confirmed with the first investigations on the object of study.

While the boundary between Canada and the United States has rhetorically been dubbed ‘the longest undefended border in the world’, Canadian narratives have vigorously sought to defend the border in symbolic terms. In 1972, Margaret Atwood suggested this nationalist project to withstand American cultural hegemony reflected the recurring theme of survival in Canadian fiction. Similarly, theorists of Canadian television have found that discerning Canadian identity, separate from that of its southern neighbour, is a frequent (and anxious) theme in its programming. This chapter examines this symbolic border-defending through a discursive analysis of two successful English Canadian television shows, Due South and The Border, with particular emphasis on the ways in which they differentiate Canadian and American styles of justice. Although the shows represent different genres, occupy different settings, and take place in different time periods, both articulate Canadian national pride in terms of law enforcement. Both plots devote a substantial amount of time dramatising the tension, and often the conflict, between Canadian and American approaches to justice...
As will become evident, the events of September 11th serve as a significant landmark that divides the imaginaries of the two shows. I argue that a comparison of the televised shift from ‘self-othering’ a Canadian against an American backdrop in Due South, to ‘othering’ an American against a Canadian backdrop in The Border, reflects both the political climate of the day, and a strengthening sense of self in the Canadian imaginary. Amidst America’s ‘war on terror’, and in relation to international protest against
American foreign policy, many episodes of The Border depict Canada as a mature and progressive nation that strikes a better balance between security and rights. No longer needing to just survive, Canadian policing identity appears robust and confident.

, the first mass-consumed, visual representation of the internet, served as both a vehicle and framework for America's earliest discussion of the internet. WarGames presented the internet simultaneously as a high-tech toy for teenagers and a weapon for global destruction. In its wake, major news media focused on potential realities of the "WarGames Scenario." In response, Congress held hearings, screened WarGames, and produced the first internet-regulating legislation. WarGames engaged a "teenaged technology" discourse, which cast both internet technology itself and its users as rebellious teenagers in need of parental control. This discourse enabled policy makers to equate government internet regulation with parental guidance rather than with suppression of democracy and innovation, a crucial distinction within 1980s cold war context. Thus, this article historicizes the internet as a cultural text, examining how technology and its regulation shaped and were shaped by cultural representations.

The effect of polypropylene/poly(lactic acid) weight ratios on the properties of blend films compatilized with polypropylenegrafted-maleic anhydride were investigated with 100:0, 60:40, 50:50, 40:60, and 0:100 of weight ratio. The blend films were prepared by melt mixing technique and cast film extrusion. The results shown that the FTIR spectrum was confirmed the interaction between compatibilizer and polymers. Morphological investigation was distinctly seen a two phases system between polypropylene and poly(lactic acid). Increasing of PLA content from 40 to 60 wt.% resulting in decreased melting temperature and crystallinity from 158 °C to 154 °C and 38% to 31%, respectively. For tensile properties, modulus and tensile strength increased with increasing the PLA content, while elongation at break was drastically decreased from 500% (polypropylene) to less than 50% (blends). The barrier properties indicated that incorporation of poly(lactic acid) into polypropylene tend to increased water vapor permeability while oxygen permeability was decreased. From the morphology, thermal, mechanical, and barrier results, the polypropylene/poly(lactic acid) blends showed a typical immiscible polymer blend.

Starch isolated from lotus stem was treated by gamma-irradiation at different doses of 5, 10 and 20 kGy. Physicochemical, morphological and pasting properties of irradiated lotus stem starches were investigated and these properties differed significantly. Carboxyl content, water absorption capacity, amylose leaching, and transmittance increased, whereas swelling power, apparent amylose content, syneresis, and pasting properties decreased after the modification in a dose dependent manner. Observation under scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that some of the starch granules were destroyed by gamma-irradiation and the breakage was much greater at a higher dose (20 kGy). X-ray diffraction pattern remained the same upon irradiation but a dose dependent decrease in relative crystallinity was observed.

In order to answer the research question; to what extent did Hollywood during the 1930"s reinforce, reinvent of challenge national values and identity in the United States? Four films will be analysed including; City Lights 1931) 1 & Modern Times (1936) 2 directed by Charlie Chaplin, and The Wizard of Oz (1939) 3 & Gone with the Wind (1939) 4 directed by Victor Fleming. Through an exploration of these films and their common leitmotifs of home, industrialisation, and mechanisation this extended essay will seek to understand how Hollywood motion pictures during the 1930s" represented the idea of home and its connection to change and/or industrialisation. In the films City Lights and Modern Times Charlie Chaplin utilises the monochrome scheme as well as no or little dialogue to show his unwillingness to fuel change and the idea of the industrialisation by using modern technological cinematic elements such as Technicolor. On the other hand Victor Fleming reinforces mechanisation and industrialisation through his expensive spectacles and Technicolor films such as The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind. Fleming

Visual anthropologists are aware that we can effectively use cameras (photo or video) as methodological devices. We can document events, create relationships, and present our findings in visual format. But few of us have discussed the conceptual capacity of the images we create in ethnographic research. Taking MacDougall's argument that images produce a different kind of knowledge, I use the example of a film I made about a Brazilian immigrant in Lisbon to explore how the process of filming has helped me to conceptualize some of my ethnography. I contend that the double potential of images (as indexes and icons) can result in a specific mode of analytical approach. In the case I highlight here, filming Eugenia's first visit back home has made us both realize the transformative nature of this event to her perception and practice of homemaking. The following articles are framed around the assertion that cinema audiences can be as unwieldy, wild and dynamic as the films that play on the screen. In this Themed Section on the subject of cinema-going behaviour, etiquette and decorum, we have sought to canvas a wide range of cultural contexts, technological innovations or disruptions and time periods. Throughout, our aim has been to continue the task of questioning just how cinema and screen culture broadly is experienced and engaged with day-today in-situ and, in the process, how it is reshaped and animated by the audience. Today, screen media are ubiquitous and very often experienced in relative isolation on laptops and hand-held devices within intimate, private spaces and virtual cocoons of seclusion carved out of public space-as when travelling on public transport, for instance. Yet, cinemas continue to operate despite ailing business models and screen media that is accessed online involves exciting new means of social inte...

This paper posits that the contemporary (re)configuration of the generic white woman of Hindi cinema solely as a spectacle was produced by the nationalist discourse during the colonial encounter. This essay explores both the textual analyses and aesthetic strategies employed in the construction of national imagery of white female subjectivities. My approach is twofold: (i) to chart the historical specificities of the representational construct of the white woman through discontinuous changes occurring across Bombay cinema, and (ii) to explore the white female subjectivities across specific historical and cultural milieu. This paper probes the historicity of the ‘Otherness’ of the white woman in Hindi cinema reviews and re-examines how Hindi cinema constitutes female whiteness. I posit that the representation of the white woman in Hindi cinema as promiscuous and sexually available was constructed within the nationalist discourse of the colonial era and is a continuation of the white memsahib in her absence. It is my position that all that was ‘repressed’ in the Hindu woman resurfaces in the white woman – the racial, sexual ‘Other’, onto whom everything repressed within the self could be projected.
