Rather than preserving original objects, the conservation of contemporary art should be thought of as managing change. This raises the question of how to theoretically capture the variability of the work without losing the sense of its artistic identity. The researchers participating in the interdisciplinary project New strategies in the conservation of contemporary art propose to use a biographical approach to investigate and compare the histories of artworks, both before and after they enter museum collections. In this paper the authors claim that not only do decisive turning points in an artwork’s life occur at other moments than those conventionally recognised, but moreover, that they are made up of various and diverging timelines, to be mapped as a river’s trajectory.

The article investigates the process of birth and development of the scientific approach to restoration in Russia which starts in the Eighteenth century but assumes its modern form only in the Twentieth century. The selected topic is therefore of great interest as there’re no many recent studies on it in Russia and there’s a lack of related materials in foreign languages, Italian included. These circumstances are even more unfair if to consider the precious contribution of foreign or foreign-born restoration professionals in the formation process of the Russian restoration school. An accurate investigation of the State Tretyakov Gallery’s Archive in Moscow allowed the author to fill this gap and to provide the relevant information about the interventions of the early Twentieth century. The scientifically-based approach of these interventions was strongly linked to the previous, difficult and not always successful way of the early Russian restoration and conservation practice.

In the aftermath of WW1, those working in the Office International des Musées (OIM) to redefine the role of museums – rethinking them as intercultural dialogue and meeting places of the society with its own past – considered the social role of the museum and its conservative mission as part of the same cultural reform. In this scenario the survey conducted in 1932 by the OIM was an opportunity for discussion between members OIM of the League of Nations countries on the figure of ‘restorer of works of art’. Aspects such as training courses, regulation of competition were analysed, taking into account theplaces ethodological, historical, critical and ethical aspects.
The positions that emerge from OIM Archive documents show the intersections between cultural choices and historical-political processes, revealing significant differences in the role attributed to diagnostic and criticism by different national cultures. The analysis of what emerges from these documents provides an opportunity to reflect on some historic trails
that shaped the roots of the Italian culture of restoration, allowing one to dwell on Italy’s relationship with the specific routes of international culture. It also provides useful elements to consider, from a historical point of view, the transformation process now in place in the training of restorers of cultural heritage.

This paper covers provides and in depth look at the history and current status Long Pond, Greensboro Vermont, as well as covering the background topic of conservation. This paper explores the reasons why the land around Long Pond is worth conserving; the history of that conservation; the ecology of the area: geology, water, soil, and forest botany; history of the land; and roads and trails on the land.

This paper attempts to create order out of an increasingly complex subject of Architectural Conservation. Largely defined as a necessity, yet without any over baseline theories, because of contrasting philosophies across the world, this paper finds order in the idea of Architectural Conservation in the context of Indian and South-Asian context, since conservation was always an ingrained part of the cultural fabric.

An interview with Marko Špikić, author of the (text)book on the conservation of European monuments between 1800 and 1850. Marko Špikić's research interest is in the history and theory of conservation in Europe and Croatia from renaissance period until today. The text includes a short review of Špikić's book "Konzerviranje europskih spomenika od 1800. do 1850. godine", which was presented at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in November 2009.

The mountain parks are for all Canadians for all time and their value cannot be measured in terms of how many access roads, motels, souvenir shops and golf courses we've provided. -Bob Jordan, 1971 The Alpine Club of Canada imagined the Rockies and neighbouring ranges to the west and the north as a "climber's paradise." Through more than a century, the ACC led the way to mountain pursuits in spectacular regions. Historian and mountain studies specialist PearlAnn Reichwein's research is informed by her experiences mountaineering and by her interest in mountain culture. She presents a compelling case for understanding wild spaces and human activity within them as parts of a whole. A work of invaluable scholarship in the areas of environmental history, public policy, sport studies, recreation, and tourism, Climber's Paradise will appeal to many non-specialists, mountaineers, environmentalists, and travellers across Canada and beyond.
