The alkaline disturbance of clayey rocks in contact with cementitious materials is an important task in safety performance studies of deep geological storage for high-level radioactive wastes in France. In this purpose, the Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) and the Scientific Research National Center (CNRS) have developed a research program in the Tournemire experimental platform (France). This program,

The 20th century was the century of the image. And it has been - and still is - a driving force in global iconographic production. Some of the most significant events of the past century were affected (if not directly produced) by the visual dimension of a historical event. Suffice it to think of the following example: the liberation of Europe from Nazism was at the hands of the Red Army -either because of the strategic plans of containment, or because of the casualties of the Russian deployment itself, or because of the oral transmission of the liberated peoples- this was linked, although to a lesser extent, to the participation of the Allied armies in the conflict: the latter with a contributory role, almost subordinated to the Soviet role on the eastern fronts. That secondary allied role was perceived by all the strata of the European society. And, after more than half a century of American iconographic production (especially in the field of Hollywood films), the responsibility for the defeat of Nazism does not fall, in the eyes of public opinion -as in the years that coincided with the event itself- on the Russian army: the younger generations, as a recent study analyzed, firmly believe that the American army alone defeated Nazism, perhaps with some European help. The image has changed the story, and not only: also the way of telling it and singing it. In the 21st century this power has multiplied exponentially, weaving a new relationship between photography and citizenship. Sifting through every vital act (a coffee, a walk, a meal or a shower) with its consequent photographic realization of the moment and its expression in the social media.

In recent years, citizen science campaigns have provided a very good platform for widespread data collection. Within the marine domain, jellyfish are among the most commonly deployed species for citizen reporting purposes. The timely validation of submitted jellyfish reports remains challenging, given the sheer volume of reports being submitted and the relative paucity of trained staff familiar with the taxonomic identification of jellyfish. In this work, hundreds of photos that were submitted to the "Spot the Jellyfish" initiative are used to train a group of region-based, convolution neural networks. The main aim is to develop models that can classify, and distinguish between, the five most commonly recorded species of jellyfish within Maltese waters. In particular, images of the Pelagia noctiluca, Cotylorhiza tuberculata, Carybdea marsupialis, Velella velella and salps were considered. The reliability of the digital architecture is quantified through the precision, reca...

A histological study was undertaken to determine the efficiency in the removal of the mucosa and Peyer's patches by standard processing of bovine intestines into natural sausage casings. The second objective was to calculate the quantity of lymphoid and nervous tissue per consumable sausage. For the histological analysis, intestinal samples were collected from 80 beef cattle during the slaughter process. Fresh and cleaned intestines were compared in analyzing the thickness of the intestinal wall, weight reduction during cleaning, removal of the mucosal layer, and the presence of lymphoid and neural tissue after cleaning. The obtained data indicate a weight reduction of about 50% during standard cleaning procedures, as 90% of the mucosa and 48% of the lymphoid tissue are removed. Based on the quantitative histological image analysis, it was calculated that 1 m of cleaned casings, weighing on average 64 g, contains about 2.8 g of mucosa, 0.3 g of lymphoid tissue, and 0.1 g of neur...

Image analysis is playing a very essential role in numerous research areas in the fields of science and technology, ranging from medical imaging to the computer science of automatic vision. Being involved in several applications, which are mainly based on a constant innovation of technologies, image analysis always requires different approaches and new algorithms, including continual upgrades and improvements of existing methods. Accordingly, the range of the analyses in which it is engaged can be considered as wide as the prospective future technologies. A challenge of image analysis is obtaining meaningful information by extracting specific features from images contained in large databases or during real-time acquisition. Among the problems requiring feature extraction are, to name a few, face detection and recognition, character recognition, and parametric determinations for augmented reality and other technologies. Another challenge is the secure encryption and decryption of multimedia data. These tasks demand highly sophisticated numerical and analytical methods. The contributions to this Special Issue provide a good overview of the most important demands and solutions concerning the abovementioned extraction, encryption, and decryption of data. In all the contributions, entropy plays a pivotal role. In the following, the reader can find subjects and problems according to the order of their publication.

In this paper, we present two new articulated motion analysis and object tracking approaches: the decentralized articulated object tracking method and the hierarchical articulated object tracking method. The first approach avoids the common practice of using a high-dimensional joint state representation for articulated object tracking. Instead, we introduce a decentralized scheme and model the interpart interaction within an innovative Bayesian framework. Specifically, we estimate the interaction density by an efficient decomposed interpart interaction model. To handle severe self-occlusions, we further extend the first approach by modeling high-level interunit interaction and develop the second algorithm within a consistent hierarchical framework. Preliminary experimental results have demonstrated the superior performance of the proposed approaches on real-world videos in both robustness and speed compared with other articulated object tracking methods.
