Background. Improvement of working conditions and anaesthesia with closed systems includes reduction of gas leaks during anaesthesia. One source of contamination is the permeation of gases through plastic materials. The volume of gas permeating through a polymer depends on its molecular structure, the solubility and the diffusion coefficient.Methods. We designed an experimental set-up to measure the permeation rates of nitrous oxide, enflurane and isoflurane through components of the anaesthetic ventilator made of silicone, latex, rubber and polyvinylchloride (PVC). Reservoir bags, ventilation tubes and endotracheal tubes were investigated.Results. The highest permeation rates of anaesthetic gases were observed with silicone materials. Permeation through silicone exceeded that of the least permeable material by more than 10.000 times. By summarizing the permeation rates of the single items, the use of silicone increases the anaesthetic system's leakage rate by 4 ml/min, which means an increase of 18% in a modern anaesthetic ventilator and of 31% in a closed system.Conclusions. The highest permeation rates were found for nitrous oxide through silicone, although nitrous oxide has a known low solubility in plastic materials. The result demonstrates the dependency of the leakage rate on the diffusibility. The leakage of anaesthetic gases caused by silicone items does not alone lead to unacceptable pollution of operating theatres. To minimize the total leakage rates of minimal-flow-systems, however, plastic materials with low solubility and low diffusion coefficients have to be used.

Carica papaya is traditionally used to treat various skin disorders, including wounds. It is widely used in developing countries as an effective and readily available treatment of various wounds, particularly burns. This study was aimed at investigating the healing efficiency of papaya latex formulated as 1.0 and 2.5% hydrogels. Burns were induced in Swiss albino mice divided into five groups as following; Group-I (negative control) received no treatment. Group-II was treated with Carbopol 974P NF empty gel. Groups-III and -IV were treated with Carbopol gel containing 1.0 and 2.5% of dried papaya latex, respectively. Group-V (positive control) received the standard drug (silver sulphadiazine and chlorhexidine gluconate cream). The efficacy of treatment was evaluated based on the hydroxyproline content, wound contraction and epithelialization time. Hydroxyproline content was found to be significantly increased in the Group-III. Significant increase in percentage wound contraction was observed from day 12 in Group-IV and from day 20 in Groups-III and -V. The epithelialization time was found to be the shortest in Group-IV. It may be concluded that papaya latex formulated in the Carbopol gel is effective in the treatment of burns and thus supports its traditional use.

Calotropis procera (Asclepiadaceae) is a well known plant in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. Based on its traditional use this plant was selected for evaluation of its wound healing potential. For this purpose four full thickness excisional wounds of 8.0 mm diameter were inflicted on the back of guinea pigs. Topical application of 20 μl of 1.0% sterile solution of the latex of C. procera twice daily was followed for 7 days. The latex significantly augmented the healing process by markedly increasing collagen, DNA and protein synthesis and epithelisation leading to reduction in wound area. Thus the present study provides a scientific rationale for the traditional use of this plant in the management of wound healing.

Natural rubber latex (NRL) has several features that make it an excellent biomaterial to promote the growth and repair of tissues, skin and bones. Most of the research with NRL membranes uses a mixture of different clones and chemical preservatives in the collection process. In this study, we compared five clones that produce NRL, seeking to identify their differences in biocompatibility. The clones studied were RRIM 600, PB 235, GT1, PR 255 and IAN 873 commonly found in plantations in Brazil. We did also study the effect of ammonia used during latex collection. NRL membranes were prepared aseptically and sterilized. In the in vitro tests, the membranes remained in direct contact with mouse fibroblasts cells for three periods, 24, 48 and 72 h. In the in vivo tests, the membranes were implanted subcutaneously in rabbits. The results indicated the biocompatibility of the membranes obtained from all clones. Membranes from the clones RRIM 600 and IAN 873 induced greater cell proliferation, suggesting greater bioactivity. It was found that the membranes made from latex that was in contact with ammonia during collection, showed cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in cultures, as well as necrosis, and increased inflammatory cells in the rabbit&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39;s tissues close to the implant.

The percutaneous Hartel transoval route goes through an inverted pyramid, with an inferior summit and a superior base that includes three compartments. The danger of the inferior compartment is the parotid duct. The middle compartment contains many branches of the mandibular nerve. The superior compartment is crossed by the internal maxillary artery and its branches, as well as the auditory tube. The base of the pyramid presents not only the foramen ovale, but also the foramen lacerum, where the trocar may injure the internal carotid, and the foramen jugulare, where the trocar may meet the internal jugular vein and nerves of the pars nervosa (IX, X, XI). The trigeminal cave contains, within the trigeminal cistern, the trigeminal ganglion, extended backward by the triangular plexus (the target for thermocoagulation). These structures are undercrossed by the masticatory motor branch of the trigeminal nerve.

However, the complexity of typesetting some commonly used documents, normally acts as a deterrent for various people, who would like to use LaTeX for their work. During a critical edition’s work it is necessary to draw the stemma codicum, i.e. the graphical representation of the lineage relationships of the textual transmission through the linkage of manuscripts and prints.
There is no specific LaTeX package designed to draw the stemmata. Nevertheless it is possible to adapt the packages usually employed for generative syntax trees in linguistic studies.
This paper discusses two cases: syntree, a user-friendly package, and xytree, a more complex yet more powerful package. The analysis limits the description to the useful functions for drawing
stemmata codicum, neglecting the others.
