The author analize the crucial passage from the cartography made on behalf of the King and as a privilege of the court to mapmaking as a tool of the administration of the modern state. The author study and discussa the creation of topographical structures all over Europe and Italy between the end of the XVIII centrury and the beginning of the XIX, and their way of working. The Mémorial Topographique et Militaire, published by the Depot dela Guerre de Paris played an important role in the dissemination of the new nature of maps, a mixture of scientific and artistic work whose aim was to represent the nature in its real forms and colors.
