The Nigerian economy was characterised with high levels of unemployment during the periods of substantial growth between 1981 and 2014. Various economists described the growth regime as “jobless”. Sectoral differences were, also, observed with regard to their job absorptive capacities. Time series secondary data covering 1981 to 2014 on the rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and sectoral Gross Value Added (GVA) at 2010 constant basic prices, employment, wage rate, inflation rate and interest rate were collected from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The variables were extracted from statutory publications of the institutions, collated and summarised into a table of data. The unit root test was carried out to test for stationarity of variables. The data was analysed using VECM at α 0.05 . The result shows that wage rate, inflation rate, and interest rate all affected employment negatively across sectors. Gross Value added affected employment...

The turnover crisis has been one of the major problems in the hospitality industry. Regardless of the considerable amount of studies on employee turnover, it is still ambiguous and requires further investigation because of its dependency on human resource in the hospitality industry as part of a service product. This paper provides a theoretical overview of Mobley’s model on employees’ retention or turnover. The primary purpose of this study is to explain that the applications of the Mobley model can either determine job dissatisfaction leading to job turnover or job satisfaction leading to job retention. This application is an attempt to reduce the effects of such a crisis in local hospitality industry; and findings from literature review indicate that deprived working conditions will lead to dissatisfied employees and they eventually quit employment. The practical implications of Mobley’s model guide various organizations in the industry to mitigate the effects of employee turnove...

Literature has established that multiple forms of work commitment exist and employees may be committed to more than one form of commitment. Hence, organizational commitment alone cannot adequately explain employees’ work commitment. Although numerous scholars have established a link between emotional intelligence, work motivation, and organizational commitment in a variety of work sectors, yet, there is a paucity of research which investigates these variables with work commitment as well as organizational culture in unison. Thus, the purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between organizational culture, emotional intelligence, work motivation, and work commitment of university academic staff in Pakistan. The study also measured the moderating effects of organizational culture and its types (clan, adhocracy, hierarchy and market) on the relationship between emotional intelligence, work motivation, and work commitment. In addition, differences in emotional intelligen...

There is a feeling in the Learning Development communityand in academia more generally-that discipline staff see the academic writing of students as a problem better 'fixed' by others. However, staff at a writing workshop held within a learning and teaching conference revealed positions that were more nuanced, inflected, compassionate and 'responsible' than this. Writing collaboratively around the words produced by staff at our workshop, led to new insights into ways that staff could support student writing as an emergent practice. We decided to collect and share the many ways that discipline staff might be encouraged to harness writing in their own curriculum spaces: a staff guide on supporting writing and other forms of learning and assessment emerged. In this paper we discuss collaborative writing as a method of inquiry as we explore the contested terrain of academic writing, challenge the notion of 'writing skills', and model a more emergent form of exploratory writing.

In recognition of the increasing cultural, linguistic, and economic diversity among the early childhood population, knowledge about parents’ beliefs concerning the way in which children learn has the potential to directly inform early childhood programs charged with the task of developing young children’s language. This study investigates Latino, Spanish-speaking parents’ (n = 200) beliefs about their 24- to 48-month-old children’s learning and (dual) language development; all children attended Early Head Start/Head Start. Given that patterns of Spanish language use can vary along a continuum of mostly Spanish to mostly English, we also examine potential differences in beliefs by patterns of reported home language use. Results of this study, using Principal Components Analysis, reveal that Spanish-speaking parents’ beliefs about the way in which young children learn and develop language vary widely. We discuss ways in which early childhood programs can build on parents’ existing knowledge base to maximize students’ learning opportunities.

The existence of international students makes an investigation of the impact on a country’s economy topical. Despite the complexity of measuring the economic impact of education tourism, many countries have conducted analyses to justify that international higher education students have a positive impact on the public economy. In the Gulf States, efforts to reform and modernize higher education to create knowledge-based societies are ongoing. Member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) share a regional vision to make the Arab Gulf a hub for a world-class education. Arab higher education systems that were long characterized by mass production of graduates and incremental support from the state are now shifting to new Western models of higher education. Several factors, including the development of the knowledge economy, massive access to higher education and increasing higher education differentiation are contributing to this push. To achieve this vision, the Gulf States have ...

The success of inclusion or organised placement of children with disabilities in mainstream classrooms largely depends on teachers ’ attitudes towards students with special educational needs (SEN) and their knowledge on how to properly educate them. In quite a number of studies, the attitude of teachers towards educating students with SEN has been put forward as a decisive factor in making schools more inclusive. If mainstream teachers do not accept the education of these students as an integral part of their job, they will try to ensure that someone else (often the special educational needs teacher) takes responsibility for these students and will organise covert segregation in the school (e.g. the special class). This study uses descriptive survey method to investigate international school teachers ’ knowledge and attitude towards inclusive education of SEN students in the Eastern Seaboard region of Thailand in the school year 2013-2014. Fifty-two male and female general education...

The study adds important contributions to the research literature on organizational citizenship behavior by providing empirical evidence of the leader’s influence as a factor in the development of OCB at the organizational level in government schools (n=34) in Pakistan. Research has shown that where OCB is present, both teachers and leaders increase work diffusion and move toward increasing productivity in their schools. This study meets the current need for reliable measures that operationalize constructs, such as OCB, by testing the validity and reliability of a new measurement scale for school level OCB; using SEM methods and survey responses from secondary school teachers (n= 408). Results revealed the survey reliably operationalizes school level OCB using three-factors named shared leadership, civic virtue, and collaborative problem solving. These factors compared favorably to the construct of a school growth mindset. Implications for schools include directing resources at prof...
