Literacy instruction for students with significant intellectual disabilities traditionally emphasizes isolated skills instruction focusing on sight words and basic vocabulary. Recent research suggests these students benefit from high-quality instruction that includes comprehension and storybook reading. This study examined the effect of a technology-based universal design for learning (UDL) approach to literacy instruction, Literacy by Design (LBD), on the reading achievement of 16 students with significant intellectual disabilities in Grades K–2. The LBD approach emphasizes reading for meaning, combining UDL-scaffolded e-books and letter and word recognition software. Nine teachers received training in research-based literacy practices. Of these, five received LBD training and implemented it four to five times weekly. Controlling for initial reading achievement, the LBD group made significantly greater gains on the Woodcock–Johnson Test of Achievement III Passage Comprehension subt...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using the reciprocal teaching strategy on improving the reading comprehension of deaf students in Jordan. The reading comprehension was measured at the literal and inferential levels. The total number of deaf participants was 10 grade six students: 5 males and 5 females The students were selected from the Marka School for Hearing Challenges overseen by the Ministry of Education. The available study sample was divided into two groups: The experimental group consisting of 5 students 2 females and 3 males was taught using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy and the control group consisting of 5 students 3 females and 2 males was taught using the conventional strategy. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference at the alpha level of .05 on the location and form of performance of deaf students on the posttest due to the teaching strategy. The group that used the reciprocal teaching strategy ...

Evolution is one of the key concepts in biology that should be explored since kindergarten. However, the few studies analysing elementary school students’ learning about natural selection used distinct criteria to evaluate their knowledge. In the present work we develope a framework to evaluate students’ understanding of natural selection, based on a literature review and on an empirical study. This framework can be used to assess students understanding of evolution and natural selection, to inform the development of educational activities and to assess their impact on students’ understanding of these processes.

There are four skills in learning German including listening, reading, speaking and writing. Writing is a complex skill to be mastered as it requires knowledge and idea developments. In writing, the process of thinking in order to develop a written idea and expression is necessary. Furthermore, having a good writing skill, the knowledge of grammar and syntax must be well-possessed. Those make writing uneasy and challenging for most students. To facilitate the students in writing, a media should be used to ease them learning writing in German and communicating with others to create a supportive learning atmosphere. Hereby a social media named Whatsapp was used as a media to discuss the process and the result of learning writing. The research question of this study is how is the result of writing in German through Whatsapp as a social media for the tenth graders of language class SMAN 1 Gedangan? The aim of this study is to describe the result of writing in German through Whatsapp as ...

Background/context: During the first decade of the 21 st century a national focus on primary grade reading has been mandated by the Reading First component of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. NCLB is the result of a bipartisan effort to strengthen accountability requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA; 1965) and to achieve its goal of reducing the achievement gap between students living in poverty and their more affluent peers. To accomplish this goal, a target of reaching 100% proficiency by 2014 was established for all students ...

The current study is built on the idea that teachers’ classroom practices are influenced by their belief system. The research investigated the beliefs of teachers about the position of reading stratagems, and their classroom implementation among 141 secondary school English teachers and found the association between their beliefs about the position of reading comprehension stratagems and their classroom application. It is a descriptive study, data were collected through a questionnaire. Means and Pearson correlation were calculated for finding out the relationship between the variables. The study found that reading stratagems in reading comprehension and their practices in classrooms are positively correlated. The study recommends understanding the conceptions of English language teachers in schools for the effective teaching of English in general and reading stratagems in particular.

Interest plays a key role in education and language learning. This study investigated if selecting and using interest-based instructional materials could impact learners' performance in L2 reading. It also examined whether there were meaningful differences between male and female learners' performance, concerning the use of interest-based materials. Sixty first-grade university students participated in the study. To answer the research questions, a quantitative method using the 'interest survey questionnaire' and the 'achievement test,' was employed. The collected data were compared and analyzed using t-test, and through SPSS. The results revealed that the use of Interest-Based Language Teaching (IBLT) made a significant contribution to the improvement of learners' performance in L2 reading. They also revealed some interaction of interest and gender, not at significant level though, with respect to the learners' performance in learning. Thus, language...

The study examined the reading skills and academic performance of 65 Grade 7 students of Santa Maria National High School for school year 2022-2023. The quasi-experimental time series method technique was used in collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data. Checklists for the profile and questionnaire for the reading skills of the students were used as data gathering instrument of the study. Frequency and percentage were used in analyzing the profile and level of academic performance, mean and standard deviation for the level of reading skills and to find out the average academic performance, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H test, and Spearman Rank Correlation to find out the relationship between the students’ level of reading skills and academic performance. The mean score difference between pretest (M=2.17) and posttest (M=2.48) was 0.3, indicating developing reading skills. Furthermore, the study also revealed that the academic performance of the students was significantly related to their reading skills level. The results of this study saw the importance of reading as an important factor contributory to a student’s academic success. To address this problem, a school-based reading program that would enhance the students reading skills with special focus on the skill of generalizing has been deemed necessary to improve the reading skill level of the students.

A mixed method research design was employed to investigate the effects of using graphic organizers (GOs) to facilitate expository text comprehension in a college EFL reading context. Participants were two intact groups (n = 21, n = 31) of 1st year Japanese engineering undergraduates. Over a six-week study period, treatment group practiced using teacher-generated mapping templates when reading. Control group completed text-based comprehension questions. Treatment effects were examined by pre-and post-testing, to examine if using GOs transferred into quantitative improvements in learner comprehension. Treatment group also completed a survey on the efficacy of GO-based reading in improving reading confidence, understanding of rhetorical structure/organization, motivation and interest. Results showed there was high variability in both group’s scores on both tests. Although control group scored significantly higher on both (p < .05) tests, relative gains in the treatment group were si...

Purpose:African American students perform disproportionately more poorly on standardized reading assessments than their majority peers. Poor reading performances may be related to test biases inherent in standardized reading instruments. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the appropriateness of the Gray Oral Reading Tests-Third Edition (GORT-3; Wiederholt & Bryant, 1992) for assessing the reading abilities of elementary-grade African American students.Method:Performances of 65 typically developing African American second through fifth graders were examined on the GORT-3.Results:African American English (AAE) was produced by most students while reading passages from the GORT-3 that were written in Standard American English (SAE). A scoring correction for AAE resulted in a statistical improvement in the performance distributions, but this did not appear to be educationally significant. Measures of total feature production predicted reading accuracy and rate, but not comp...

Purpose: This investigation examined the performance of 50 African American children on a reading comprehension test. Method: Longitudinal data were compared for two groups of students who were preschoolers or kindergartners at Time 1 and elementary-grade students at Time 2. Outcomes were examined for positive predictive relationships based on their oral language and cognitive skills as preschoolers and kindergartners at Time 1. The Time 1 preschoolers were all from low-income homes, whereas the Time 1 kindergartners were all from middle-income homes. All students were urban dwellers and speakers of African American English. Results: Two measures predicted later reading comprehension levels for the Time 1 preschoolers: use of complex syntax and shape matching. The Time 1 preschoolers and kindergartners showed no significant differences in reading comprehension at the end of first grade, but the preschoolers were significantly ahead of the kindergartners in reading by third grade. Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment (CDA) is a type of educational assessment that is designed to measure specific knowledge structures and processing skills in students so as to provide information about their cognitive strengths and weaknesses (Leighton & Gierl, 2007). CDA has been instrumental in turning the attention of practitioners to more diagnostic, descriptive, and fine-grained levels of feedback. Different statistical, psychometric models, called Cognitive Diagnostic Models (CDMs), have been proposed to extract this kind of information from both diagnostically and non-diagnostically designed tests. These models provide two sets of information to the test users: information on mastery/non-mastery patterns of sub-skills for testtakers and information on the diagnostic power of test items. Due to its novelty and relative complexity of its procedures, cognitive diagnostic assessment is still far from achieving its proper place in educational assessment. This paper aims at providin...

The comprehension of reading texts and searching for information in texts requires methods in their implementation. One of the things that influences learning to read text is the information in the text and the student's reading method. Therefore, the most effective reading learning method is needed to be applied, and the learning method chosen is the SQ3R method. The purpose of this research is to see how the SQ3R approach influences students' understanding, knowledge, and interest in reading texts in class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Kebomas Gresik. The method used in this research is experimental research with a true-experimental design (pre- and post-test). The sample for this research is the class VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Kebomas Gresik. Data collection used reading text information learning assessments and reading information tests to determine whether they correctly understood the content and information of the text they read. Non-test data collection using obs...

Students who can regulate their own learning are proposed to gain the most out of education, yet research into the impact of self-regulated learning skills on performance shows mixed results. This study supports the link between self-regulated learning and performance, while providing evidence of grade- or age-related differences. Australian students from Grades 5 to 8 completed mathematics or reading comprehension assessments and self-regulated learning questionnaires, with each response ranked on a hierarchy of quality. All assessments were psychometrically analysed and validated. In each cohort and overall, higher performing students reported higher levels of self-regulated learning. Still, age-related differences outweighed performance differences, resulting in significantly lower reported usage of self-regulated learning skills in Grade 7 students compared to those in Grades 5, 6 and 8. These findings suggest that either age or school organisational differences mediate students...

Objectives. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate if there are significant differences in reading-comprehension and mathematics between deaf and hearing individuals, identify if the level of Psychological Well-Being and Subjective Well-Being is related to higher mastery in reading-comprehension and mathematics, and finally, determine if self-perceived disadvantages in reading and mathematics by deaf individuals are related with their mastery in reading and mathematics tasks. Material and methods. A mixed-method was conducted including correlational and topological analysis of speech. The sample was constituted by 58 volunteers: five deaf individuals (age M =28.4) and 53 hearings (age M =18.75). Participants responded to the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Ryff´s Scales of Psychological Well-Being after solving the Adults Reading Evaluation and the Buenos Aires Mathematics test. Results. Higher scores were found for the hearing group in reading and mathematics. No c...
