A common problem found in high-speed communication is inters-symbol interference (ISI).This occurs when a transmission interferes with itself, and the receiver cannot decode the transmission correctly. Because the signal reflects from large objects such as mountains or buildings, the receiver sees more than one copy of the signal. This is what is referred to as multipath. Since the indirect paths take more time to travel to the receiver, delayed copies of the signal interfere with a direct signal causing (ISI).To avoid ISI due to multipath, successive OFDM path, successive OFDM symbols area separated by the guard band. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is mainly designated to combat the effect of multipath reception.
