In conjunction with the release of the final film in the 'Downton Abbey' saga, the 'Downton Abbey: 3-Film Collection' arrives on Blu-ray disc courtesy of Universal. This collection features all three films ('Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture', Downton Abbey: A New Era', and 'Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale') together in one space and money-saving release. The discs included here are identical to their previous stand-alone releases. A slipcover, and Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere are also included.

One of the charms of the Downton Abbey series has been the way that each season examined and challenged the exceedingly strict and entrenched class structure and rules which seemed to govern virtually every aspect of those who lived at Downton, whether they be upstairs or down. The Lord and Lady of the house where quite progressive, all things considered, and while Robert was often the slowest to accept change, his wife and his daughters could usually convince him of the correct course of action even if it wasn't usual or customary. While downstairs, Mr. Carson could be equally resistant to change. It often fell to either his staff or his demonstrated paternalistic feelings toward Lady Mary that afforded him the ability to change and adapt when he needed to. Throughout the series, there were such instances in every season, with the most notable being one of Cora and Robert's daughters marrying a member of the staff, and areas of the home being used to tend soldiers injured during World War I. The films continue this trend, with the staff enacting a revolution of sorts, Lady Mary participating in poorly-viewed profession while Mr. Molesley seeks to follow a dream, and, in the latest film, the family confronts the reaction to Lady Mary's divorce at a time when it wasn't socially acceptable.

But through the series and the films, it's the characters and their growth and relationships that matter most. The films, while trying to squeeze a great many plotlines and ideas into three approximately two-hour installments, do their best to bring the Downton family all the way to 1930 in a manner that provides a satisfying conclusion to each character's arc and providing a suggestion at their futures. The most touching moment, though, has to be the departure of Dame Maggie Smith whose character of the Dowager Countess passed away during the second film, and to whom the third film is dedicated. Her contributions to the series were significant, and her absence from the third film is palpable.

Downton Abbey: 3-Film Collection Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

Featuring a massive cast that includes Hugh Bonneville (Lord Robert Grantham, 'Paddington'), Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora Grantham, 'Once Upon a Time in America'), James Carter (Mr. Carson, 'Haunted Honeymoon'), and Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), each of the films included here works hard to advance the stories of the, by my count at least, approximately 22 integral characters of the Downton story while also dealing with the primary plotline(s) in just over two hours. It's a substantial undertaking. While the films perhaps lack a bit of the depth of the series by virtue of the size of the cast and the time constraints, none of the production of values have been compromised, and, in fact, the films take viewers to some places they've not been before. Costumes are still elegant and authentic, sets and locations are lavishly appointed, the scores are wonderful, and the acting is top-notch. For fans of the series who have yet to add these films to their collections, the Downton Abbey: 3-Film Collection comes highly recommended.
