Greenland 4K Blu-ray Review

Due to the vagaries of distribution and licensing deals, Mementowas first released on Blu-ray way back in 2006 by Sony (so early it's perhaps appropriately number 123 in our database). But over the ensuing years, the acclaimed film had a really curious assortment of releases by various labels or studios, including a tenth anniversary edition released by Lionsgate (reviewed by yours truly), as well as evidently a Warner Brothers release and another by Samuel Goldwyn. I mention this odd fact for a couple of reasons: first of all, it sure feels like time is moving backwards in terms of how Lionsgate has approached releasing the two (thus far) Greenland films, and also saliently, this is a very rare release (I frankly can't think of another right now) where the 4K disc in the release is courtesy of one studio and the 1080 disc in the release is courtesy of another. As I mentioned in our already published Greenland 2: Migration 4K Blu-ray review and Greenland 2: Migration Blu-ray review (that "already published" bit is a hint as to the backwards flow of time with regard to the disc releases of this film), while both films were ostensibly released on 4K and/or 1080 simultaneously, for some reason Lionsgate first promoted only the 4K release of the second film, only to switch horses and/or timeframes at a late moment to indicate they were only promoting the 1080 release of that particular production. One way or the other, in procuring a 4K copy of the second film for review purposes, I discovered that despite any ostensible release date, the disc showed up at my door the day after I ordered it (quite a while before the official street date). In the meantime, Lionsgate never even mentioned the first film in any PR to me personally until just a day ago, with a general "announcement" without review copies.

As alluded to above, Greenland had a 1080 release several years ago courtesy of Universal, and it is indeed that same Universal 1080 disc which is included in this package. Greenland is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 2.39:1. The IMDb lists the Arri Alexa Mini, but as of the writing fails to specify the resolution of the DI. There is some ancillary online data suggesting a 4K DI, but I haven't been able to authoritatively confirm that, though from the looks of this often quite impressive 4K presentation, I'm inclined to believe that there was a 4K DI. There are some definite improvements in both fine detail and (especially) palette in this presentation when stacked up against the generally excellent 1080 disc from Universal. You can see better detail in admittedly picayune items like the pattern on the floor of the building being constructed in the opening vignette, but throughout the presentation, fine detail on everything from facial features to practical sets and costumes can see upticks. Clarity is exceptional in the opening half hour or so of the film in several brightly lit moments before the maelstrom begins. Still, it's probably the palette that enjoys the biggest change here courtesy of HDR (no Dolby Vision that my player detected). A lot of the film after the 25 minute or so mark tends to be rather dark, and HDR does help illuminate some of the less detailed areas of the frame throughout the rest of the film. A number of tones get some observable highlights here, with oranges and blues especially, with an orange and yellow drenched series of scenes circa an hour and 15 minutes into the film which are unbelievably vivid. Teals and greens also pervade the palette more impressively here, especially in some of the scenes with Mom and son on their own. Digital grain is noticeable but never overwhelming.

Lionsgate has been tending to provide Dolby Atmos tracks on a lot of their 4K UHD releases of previous 1080 releases, but in this case, they've simply ported over the excellently immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track that Marty details in his 1080 review. Marty even mentions in his review how the film seems to "scream out" for a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X track, but what's here is pretty impressive, including some really well placed (and often extremely directional) sound effects during various meteor showers. LFE enjoys several prominent bursts that are floorboard rattling. Scoring can also permeate the side and rear channels. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.

• Commentary with Director Ric Roman Waugh and Producer Basil Iwanyk

• Humanity (HD; 1:20) is basically a glorified trailer posing as a brief EPK.

• Deleted Scenes (HD; 6:30 or 4:55) include optional introductions by Ric Roman Waugh (hence the two running times listed).

A digital copy is included and packaging features a slipcover.

Greenland 4K Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

Greenland (the country, not the film) has obviously been in the news lately for reasons unrelated to an impending apocalypse (maybe?), and in fact a certain reviewer may have posted a joke to social media about a new upcoming HGTV series called House Hunters: Greenland. Some unintended comedy may also accompany the kind of weird rollout on 4K of this film and its sequel, but for fans of this first entry, the 4K presentation is often very impressive. Recommended.
