Middle Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray Review
So close, yet so far away.
Reviewed by Randy Miller III, November 17, 2021
Following up on their collected releases of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies on 4K last year, Warner Bros. has issued a massive "Middle Earth Ultimate Collector's Edition" for the 2021 holiday season, a suitably oversized 31-disc set that brings together both trilogies for the first time. For pure movie content, it's admirably complete: you get all six films on 4K in both their theatrical and extended cuts... as well as their newly remastered Blu-ray counterparts, which are new for this year. (Those just seeking The Lord of the Rings's new Blu-rays will be glad to know they're available separately.) But despite the presence of a new and exclusive bonus disc, the fatal flaw of this massive set is that it's still far from complete: those countless hours of "appendice" bonus features -- you know, the ones still on bonus DVDs and Blu-rays that you've watched maybe half of -- are not included here, which means die-hard fans won't be clearing off their crowded shelf space to make room for what should have been an all-inclusive effort.
As for the films? You've seen and know them already, or you wouldn't be here. But just for the record, overviews of each one (as well as their extended counterparts) can be found at the links below. All were written by former Blu-ray.com scribe Kenneth Brown, who I can only assume is still recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Hobbit Trilogy (2012-2014)
Middle Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray, Video Quality 4K

1080p

All six films in both the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies are presented here in both 4K and Blu-ray, the latter of which are advertised as "newly remastered" in that they are sourced from last year's new masters.
THE 4K DISCS
Since all six films in this collection were already released as separate trilogies on 4K last year and these are the exact same discs, individual write-ups for each film and its extended counterpart can be found below.
Regarding Lord of the Rings: first, I'd like to address a few pieces of misinformation from my 4K reviews last year: contrary to initial reports, the 2160p transfers of these three films (which includes their theatrical and extended cuts) were not in fact true 4K presentations, but rather 2K upscales. Similarly, most of the visual effects were not rebuilt from scratch. Mild to moderate amounts of digital noise reduction were applied to certain scenes, and a handful of flashbacks were heavily desaturated to match the visual style of _The Hobbit_trilogy. Although I still stand by my initial evaluation of these transfers, I sincerely apologize for my incorrect information about their source material.
The Fellowship of the Ring 4K - Theatrical Cut | Extended Edition
The Two Towers 4K - Theatrical Cut | Extended Edition
The Return of the King 4K - Theatrical Cut | Extended Edition
Separate 4K evaluations of the Hobbit films and their extended versions were written by fellow reviewer Neil Lumbard during his similar coverage of last year's 4K editions. Although I do not consider them to be perfect efforts for similar reasons to those above and have rated them accordingly, they do indeed feature more impressive presentations than their Blu-ray counterparts. Additionally, this trilogy's much more digital aesthetic gives it a smoother appearance that doesn't stand as much in contrast with... well, let's just say "fan expectations" and leave it at that.

The Desolation of Smaug 4K - Theatrical Cut | Extended Edition

THE BLU-RAY DISCS
For very few fans -- again, because they're also available separately -- the primary draw of this massive collection will be those newly remastered Blu-rays of the Lord of the Rings films. (Fundamentally, the included Hobbit Blu-rays are identical to the older releases.) These were sourced from the same recent masters as those found on the included 4K discs and, for that reason, many of my general thoughts about those transfers linked above still apply here. While their lower bit rates -- a combination of smaller disc storage space and less efficient encoding -- and obvious lack of HDR enhancement make them less immediately impressive than the 4Ks, these 1080p transfers offer a uniformly better visual presentation than their older Blu-ray counterparts. Combined with 32 fresh screenshots sourced from these new discs (as well as eight more from The Hobbit Blu-rays, just to be fair) and 30 more between the separate remastered Blu-ray theatrical and extended trilogy sets linked above, hopefully those who haven't moved on to 4K yet will at least get an accurate idea of what the new LotR Blu-rays look like. It's mostly an improvement.
Whether you opt for the theatrical cuts or Extended Editions, these new Blu-rays serve up a decently satisfying 1080p transfer that, in some ways, feels like a surprisingly even trade-off in comparison to the marginally better-looking 4K discs. Since both formats are sourced from the same recent 2K master, inherent strengths and weaknesses are still easily spotted along the way: somewhat better fine detail, more natural colors (including the removal of the green tint from The Fellowship of the Ring's Extended Edition, which is reason enough to upgrade), more refined contrast, and overall shadow detail. Of course, this isn't an accurate statement from start to finish: the flashbacks seen during The Two Towers, for example, have intentionally been drained of color to better match the look of The Hobbit trilogy. (This was an artistic decision by Peter Jackson made in recent years, and good luck arguing with someone who just made $1.6B last week.) Likewise, other moments are less overly saturated in comparison with the older Blu-rays -- several scenes in The Shire immediately spring to mind -- but these are obviously not night and day differences, just a more natural palette rather than one that's almost candy-colored. Still other stray shots appear brighter overall, with more pronounced highlights that aren't the result of careless contrast boosting. As a whole I prefer the fundamental look of these 1080p transfers to their earlier counterparts, and in some ways it's not even close.
However... these transfers have again fallen victim to digital noise reduction, a flaw first noticed by sharp-eyed fans (and a couple of reviewers, LOL) after the stand-alone 4K discs were released last year. Given its re-appearance here, this now appears to be a baked-in flaw with the new master used for both formats, but whether or not it was a decision by Peter Jackson -- again, to match the look of _The Hobbit_trilogy -- is unclear. Although not all that noticeable in some scenes, others -- especially ultra-wide shots -- take on an overly waxy sheen that can be distracting at times... but by and large, it doesn't always register as strongly in 2K because of the lower resolution. Bottom line: if excessive DNR is the bane of your existence, it might not be a fair trade for the visual improvements offered elsewhere on these Blu-rays. But I'll admit it didn't bother me as much as other discs that suffer from the same type of processing, because to my eyes the older Blu-rays were far from perfect and yet they were mostly well-received 10 years ago.
Either way, there's clearly room for improvement here: I'd have certainly preferred less in the way of DNR, although I realize its value in blending live-action footage with some of the waxier-looking special effects and other "sweetened" backgrounds. But given the somewhat chilly reception of those 4K discs last year, these Blu-rays proportionately hold their own and will, for the most part, be seen as an improvement over their decade-old counterparts.
Middle Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray, Audio Quality

Easily the least contentious aspect of this boxed set, the Dolby Atmos Audio included on all six films -- as well as their extended counterparts -- is pretty much perfect and it's included on both the 4K and Blu-ray discs. (For those without Dolby Atmos setups, the mix will automatically unfold down to Dolby TrueHD 7.1.) As such, those separate write-ups from last year's 4K releases still apply here and are linked below. Please note that dub and subtitle options may differ from those releases, at least in regards to the included Blu-rays. Otherwise, no news is good news.

Middle Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray, Special Features and Extras

THE PACKAGING
This 31-disc set ships in a brick-sized outer box with a removable title band and J-card with familiar design elements and still images from all six films in the franchise. Inside the fold-out box -- which stays shut with a hinged magnet enclosure and opens to neatly display everything -- are separate keepcases with new artwork and matching slipcovers for all six films and their extended counterparts, as well as an exclusive bonus Blu-ray disc (detailed below) in a digipak jewel case, a Digital Copy redemption code, and a few printed goodies all tucked inside a paper box. The printed extras include seven art cards and a square-bound 64-page book with costume sketches, photographs, and production notes. In lieu of a more verbose write-up and a handful of badly-framed cell phone pictures, Warner Bros.' short promotional video (included with their press announcement and seen below), provides a decent enough overview of the packaging. It's a handsome presentation overall and pretty well thought-out as far as these things go.
LEGACY BONUS FEATURES
The elephant in the room, of course, is Warner Bros.' omission of those hours upon hours of exhaustive "appendice" bonus features familiar to die-hard fans of the Extended Editions, as well as a handful of more promotional extras exclusive to the theatrical discs. Their omission makes this a woefully incomplete "Ultimate Collector's Edition" indeed, although I'm told that many of can be streamed after redeeming the included Digital Copy code. That's no substitute for good old-fashioned on-disc bonus features in my book, which means that you'll need to hang on to those separate older releases to have everything physically. Even so, a handful of legacy extras are indeed tucked away on all of the Extended Edition Blu-rays (not the 4K discs), and mostly in the form of audio commentaries. These include:
The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition

However, each of the Extended Edition Blu-ray movie discs for these films includes a filmmakers' audio commentary and a few promotional odds and ends.

EXCLUSIVE BONUS DISC
A bonus disc included with this boxed set contains several exclusive extras. These include:
- Alamo Drafthouse Cast Reunions - Hosted by J.R.R. Tolkein superfan Stephen Colbert, these separate pieces bring together key cast members for a lively discussion celebrating, among other things, the 20th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring's theatrical release and the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy as a massive critical and commercial success... But before you get _too_excited (or if you're just wondering why I italicized "separate" up there), these are virtual interviews just in case you forgot what decade we're living in. Don't get me wrong: all three sessions are still very much worth a once-over for Colbert's moderation skill and to hear the cast's first-hand memories... and I certainly understand why they were separated into smaller groups, as the logistics and chaos of a congested 12-person group chat would've made this an exercise in futility. But I just wish it happened under better circumstances, because who really wants to watch another friggin' Zoom call?
- The Fellowship of the Ring (39:38) - Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin, and Elijah Wood.
- The Two Towers (32:24) - Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler, and Viggo Mortensen.
- The Return of the King (29:48) - Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, and Peter Jackson.
- Cannes Film Festival Presentation Reel (26:55) - This preview footage of all three films in the _Lord of the Rings_trilogy -- which was screened for Cannes audiences in May 2001, months before the theatrical release of The Fellowship of the Ring -- is charmingly introduced by director Peter Jackson with in-character Ian McKellan on their way to the Shire for Bilbo's 111th birthday party. The bulk of this piece, then, is more or less a nicely-composed extended trailer for all three films... with the disclaimer that these scenes are presented with image quality somewhere between DVD and Blu-ray (and with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio to boot), although it's interesting to see certain sequences without their final color grading. Additionally, one or two scenes have different music cues and a we even get a few short clips didn't even made it to the finished films. This one's a very interesting little piece of history, even if most of it's stuff you've seen countless times already.
All in all, this is painfully lackluster for a bonus disc... especially one that serves as most of these "Ultimate Collector's Edition" extras in a film franchise known for its rich level of supplements. A wasted opportunity, indeed.
Middle Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

Warner Bros.' Middle Earth Ultimate Collector's Edition is an attractive, compact, and frustratingly incomplete boxed set that will appeal to packaging junkies and those who don't need the exhaustive bonus features included on previous Blu-rays and DVDs. From an A/V standpoint, it's either an improvement or at least a side-step from earlier editions, with both the 4K discs (released separately last year) and newly-remastered Blu-rays created from the same recent source material. I'm sure this will sell more than a few copies for the upcoming holiday season (which marks The Fellowship of the Ring's 20th anniversary), but it's only a recommended purchase if you can live with the lack of extras.
