Night Patrol Blu-ray Review

Co-writer/director Ryan Prows ("Lowlife," "V/H/S/94") attempts to go ambitious with "Night Patrol," which initially presents itself as a corrupt cop saga before transitioning into a genre film, blended with a tale of tribal purpose. The movie is all over the place, and that messiness seems to interest Prows the most, delivering what's meant to be a wild ride of action, heart, and horror for those who enjoy some aggression and confusion with their daily dose of cinema. "Night Patrol" has a lot of elements speeding around the picture, making focus difficult for Prows, who chases numerous ideas without much editorial and thespian support. It's a big swing from the helmer, which is also welcome, but also mostly a whiff, as the feature lacks enough structure to help support a commanding viewing experience, often going noisy instead of interesting.

Ethan (Justin Long) is a veteran LAPD officer spending the last three months breaking in his new partner, Xavier (Jermaine Fowler), an ex-gang member who's turned his life around. Ethan is desperate to join the Night Patrol, a secretive force led by Deputy (Phil Brooks), receiving a chance to prove himself when his superiors order him to murder Primo (Zuri Reed), a gang member spending time with rival Wazi (RJ Cyler), who's also Xavier's little brother. A witness to the crime, Wazi takes off into the night, trying to catch the attention of Bornelius (Freddie Gibbs), Primo's older brother, and he deals with his mother, Ayanda (Nicki Micheaux), who seems to understand that something isn't right about the Night Patrol. Her awareness turns into war when Deputy and his forces reveal their vampiric ways, and Ethan's deceased father, Sarge (Dermot Mulroney), emerges from the shadows, embracing a chance to turn his son into a monster as tensions rise in Los Angeles, putting Xavier on the hunt for answers.

"Night Patrol" opens with Wazi locked up inside an interrogation room, managing a nasty chest wound while Captain Freeman (Nick Gillie) pushes the bleeding man to sign a confession. The scene is a flash-forward, severely damaging the potential for suspense as Prows makes it clear Wazi is a survivor, and the editorial mistake doesn't help pull viewers in tighter, as the film does much better with the simplicity of character introductions. We meet Ethan, an ex-military man dealing with the streets of LA, spending long days with Xavier, who's looking to do some good in what's basically a war zone. "Night Patrol" even returns to Wazi, who's trying to enhance his secret affair with Primo by giving her his mother's special magical ring, and this piece of jewelry becomes more important to the plot and Prows's plans to turn the picture into a comic book of sorts later on in the feature.

There's a community of characters to follow in "Night Patrol," and they're all connected in one way or another, but the saga of Ethan is prioritized, following a cop who's struggling with the loss of his father at the hands of the Night Patrol, concocting a revenge plan that leads him directly to murder. It's a plot that could carry the picture on its own, but the writing attempts to get big with motivations and investigations, including Xavier, who's worried about his little brother, trying to learn more about the crime he witnessed. Ethan is eventually reunited with his formerly deceased parent, and "Night Patrol" really leans into horror happenings, tracking the rise of the vampires and Ethan's inner battle with self-control after being bitten. There's Ayanda too, and she's fully aware that creatures of the night are real. Bornelius has his own quirks as well, including devotion to spiritual thinking when confronted by cold, hard reality.

The image presentation (2.38:1 aspect ratio) for "Night Patrol" offers a heavy "grainy" look for the rough horror picture, and the style choice mostly holds together with a few noisy extremes. Detail is acceptable, examining weathered looks on the characters, finding skin particulars on humans and monsters. Gory events and makeup achievements are appreciable. Costuming is decently fibrous, ranging from heavier police uniforms to feathery tribal outfits in the finale. Exteriors maintain depth as the chase visits a few corners of Los Angeles. Interiors offer dimension, exploring decorative additions. Color is stable, with the production occasionally favoring black light visuals and extreme lighting, including the glowing green of magic powers. Primaries are distinct, exploring gang gear and red blood. Skin tones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix maintains clear dialogue exchanges throughout the listening event, managing performance choices that intentionally lead into mumbling. Vampiric control offers an appropriate echoed effect, which registers as intended. Scoring supports with sharp instrumentation, often joined by soundtrack selections, which maintain crisp vocals and electronic beats. Surrounds aren't superpowered, but musical moods go circular, along with atmospherics involving horror events and group panic. Low-end perks up with violent activity, including explosions, and rap beats occasionally add thump.

These aren't major deletions from "Night Patrol," offering only minor changes to the picture, though the alternate opening sequence is a significant improvement over the one selected for the final cut.
• Behind-the-Scenes (14:06, HD) brings viewers to the "Night Patrol" shoot, offering a fly-on-the-wall examination of the production process. Most of the featurette is devoted to observing cast and crew camaraderie as they deal with down time and prepare shots. Location work is explored, examining performance choices and the working of prop guns, which supply a clicking sound when triggers are pulled. Also of interest are the manufacturing of stylistic choices, helping to understand some of the more bizarre visuals present in the movie. Stunt and wire work is also highlighted, watching the team manage physical action.
• Outtakes (3:54, HD) collects flubbed lines, improvisational ideas, giggle fits, and wirework mistakes.
• VFX Reel (3:25, HD) is an interesting look at the layering of visual effects in "Night Patrol," with some elements quite subtle (such as the addition of graffiti behind characters), while others are more advanced, bringing fire and flying additions to the picture. Comparisons are offered for all examples, tracking the technical journey.
• A Theatrical Trailer is not included on this release.

Night Patrol Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

"Night Patrol" looks to add commentary on police actions and community oppression, also delving into African tribal power, which is something that requires significantly more screen time to develop than Prows is willing to give it. A lot of the film borders on the ridiculous, and clarity starts to dwindle as the movie slides into mayhem, merging explosions of vampiric violence with gangland defense. Again, "Night Patrol" has the right idea with its vision of police corruption and genre additions, but Prows prefers a scattergun approach to the endeavor, making the viewing experience more unpleasantly overwhelming and half-baked than thrilling.
