Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Blu-ray delivers stunningly beautiful video and superb audio in this enjoyable Blu-ray release

Moments after surviving an all-out attack from the Le Domas family, Grace discovers she's reached the next level of the nightmarish game � and this time with her estranged sister Faith at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Blu-ray Review

It may say something either about the film or my ability to retain information that I had absolutely no memory of having seen, let alone reviewed, the first Ready or Not when this Blu-ray arrived and I glanced at the cover and saw that red "2" emblazoned after the first three words of the title. That lack of recognition passed instantaneously as soon as I actually popped the disc in and the opening images quickly revived memories of the, well, messy aftermath of a wedding that brought Grace (Samara Weaving) into the Le Domas family. My Ready or Not Blu-ray review gives a plot summary detailing how that film was built on an underlying conceit of a "deal with the Devil" the Le Domas clan had made generations earlier which resulted in a bizarre "game" that Grace was forced to play. The first film had an entertaining mix of horror and comedy, but the fact that I didn't immediately realize this sequel was a continuation of the tale may suggest that, while tasty like junk food, there was little nutritional value to sustain stronger memories of the piece. Interestingly, then, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come attempts to up that "nutrition" angle by introducing Grace's heretofore unknown sister Faith (Kathryn Newton), offering a subplot of two estranged siblings who suddenly find themselves (initially) handcuffed together as the dual sacrifices in a new, more elaborate, "game".

The first Ready or Not did well enough, even if it was certainly nothing approaching a box office blockbuster, but that lack of overwhelming success coupled with the fact that this sequel arrives several years after the original may end up making this film as potentially "unrecognized" by the general public as it initially was by me. This follow up relies on several previously "unannounced" reveals that the first film never really got into, not the least of which is Grace's sister (Grace overtly self identifies as someone without any family in the first film). That is elided through the whole "estrangement" angle, but the screenplay in this film also posits a whole bevy of uppity families across the globe who have made their own "deals with the Devil", with all of them supposedly members of a so-called High Council. Some patently ridiculous new "rules" (the first film had its own set tied to the game being played) delivered by the Devil's own attorney (Elijah Wood) articulate the fact that Grace having survived the carnage of the first film did not in fact set her "free", but simply catapulted her into a new, if not exactly improved, contest where she has to survive again, this time against all the other competing families, for what is called the High Seat, the Council's ruler, formerly inhabited by one Chester Danforth (David Cronenberg, in a stunt casting cameo that only lasts for a minute or two). Chester's two children Ursula (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Titus (Shawn Hatosy) are at the front of the line of the cohort wanting to take out Grace (and Faith) to keep the High Seat in their family.

There are of course other characters also involved in the hunt for Grace and Faith, and some of the interstitial bits offering brief respites from another onslaught of blood and guts attempt to fitfully develop some of the interrelationships. The bulk of the interrelationship angle is undeniably focused on Grace and Faith, though, and the screenplay by (returning) writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy does a reasonably adept job of defining two sisters separated by supposed family trauma that has left Faith seriously resenting Grace. Will the two overcome their personal issues to fight back together and prevail? What do you think?

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is probably ultimately too reliant on all the new "rules" that are introduced almost willy nilly through the narrative in order to keep things moving along. There are, as with the first film, some spectacularly gory kill scenes, and some decent jokes littering the premises, but probably even more than the first film this comes off as a disposable enterprise that is enjoyable on its own merits but may not ultimately be, well, memorable.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Blu-ray, Video Quality

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of 20th Century Studios' Searchlight and Disney / Buena Vista with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.39:1. The IMDb lists the Arri Alexa and a 4K DI as the relevant data points, and this is another extremely appealing (if often graphically gory) presentation that delivers consistently nice fine detail levels and a well suffused palette. A surplus of relative close-ups on the carnage that occurs, especially the repeated wounds Grace suffers, can be stomach churning, but it adds to the weird "eww" comedy the film often exploits. A lot of the early moments of the chase take place in well lit outdoor environments (if Grace and Faith have to survive the night, why does the contest have to begin in mid-afternoon?), and some of the early material in particular offers really nicely precise looks at grass and foliage. There are some occasionally murky moments once things move inside, but shadow detail is at least acceptable and often surprisingly fulsome.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Blu-ray, Audio Quality

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come features a nicely immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that opens and closes kind of cheekily with different renditions of the Carole King - Gerry Goffin classic Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?. While the source cues and underscore are presented with some appealing spaciousness, it's really the chaotic chase and skirmish material where the side and rear channels are most noticeably engaged, often providing some kinetic audio to match the frenetic visuals. Dialogue is rendered without any issues. Optional subtitles in several languages are available.

• The Game Goes On: The Making of Ready or Not 2 (HD; 14:28) comes in four parts despite its relatively brief running time, and covers a lot of the production with some interviews and behind the scenes footage.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

There are going to have be some seriously rejiggered new "rules" if there's ever going to be a Ready or Not 3, considering the seemingly apocalyptic (for some characters, anyway) ending of this outing. Fans of the first film should find some decent entertainment here, even if things are often almost deliberately random in terms of revelations and developments. Technical merits are solid and the supplements very enjoyable. With caveats noted, Recommended.
