Stripes 4K Blu-ray delivers truly amazing video and audio in this exceptional Blu-ray release

Thanks to a run of bad luck and go-nowhere jobs, John convinces Russell to join the army so they can get in shape, likening it to a health spa. Once in boot camp, wiseguy John tangles with his by-the-book Sgt. and becomes the unofficial leader for his platoon, made up mostly of other misfits and assorted losers. After somehow making it through graduation, they are given a special assignment but, thanks to John's romantic interest in a pretty MPO, the other men wind up behind the Iron Curtain until John, Russell, their dates and Sgt. Hulka make a daring rescue attempt in explosive style.

Stripes 4K Blu-ray Review

Sony first released the fan-favorite 1981 Bill Murray Comedy Stripes in 4K as part of the second volume in Sony's prestigious Columbia Classics Collection. Technical specifications feature 2160p/HDR video and Dolby Atmos audio. Several newly produced supplements have been included alongside returning extras. The UHD and Blu-ray also both include two cuts of the film: theatrical and extended.

Click here to read Martin Liebman's review of the extended cut of the film. He writes, "what it lacks in polish and superior editing it more than makes up for through the wizardry of its leads. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and John Candy carry the movie even when the script isn't quite up to snuff, and combined with a wonderful score by Elmer Bernstein, Stripes remains one of the 1980s' better screwball comedies."

The SteelBook itself is a blast, though some may complain it doesn't feature more original artwork, particularly on the rear cover, which merely posts photos from the film and production on the brick wall that wraps around from the front. Still, the iconic "I Want You" poster is offered in all its glory on the front, so hopefully complaints are kept in check. Inside, two discs are housed, one slightly overlapping the other, on the right side of the interior cover (which depicts a photo from the film). It's not the most attractive SteelBook you'll add to your collection, but it works well with the movie.

Liebman concludes, "Stripes is a classic 80s comedy made in a way that they sadly don't make anymore; there's just not the same level of talent on either side of the camera these days, but fans can revisit this classic now anytime looking as pristine as the day it released and, frankly, probably better now four decades after the fact. The UHD has been fine-tuned, visually and aurally alike, and the blend of new and returning supplements make this another must own."
