Summer Wars 4K Blu-ray delivers stunning video and audio in this excellent Blu-ray release

Timid eleventh-grader and math genius Kenji Koiso is asked by his secret crush Natsuki to come with her to her family's Nagano home for a summer job. Turns out Kenji discovers his "summer job" is to pretend to be Natsuki's fiance, for the celebration of Natsuki's spunky grandmother's 90th birthday. There, he receives a strange math problem on his cell phone which, being a math genius, he can't resist solving it. As it turns out, his solution creates chaos within the virtual world of OZ, translating into anarchy in real-life.

Summer Wars 4K Blu-ray Review

The other "Avatar" from 2009.

Shout Factory has recently upgraded early films by celebrated director (and sometimes writer) Mamoru Hosada as 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook combo packs, and that trend continues with his 2009 drama/action hybrid Summer Wars. An unusually plotted story even by anime standards, it tells the story of a teenage math prodigy that falls into an unlikely relationship and a cyber catastrophe all in the same week. Wonderfully animated with plenty of clever twists along the way for newcomers, Summer Wars is nonetheless probably not the easiest entry point for those new unfamiliar with Hosada's work -- I'd direct newcomers to either The Girl Who Leapt Through Time or Wolf Children first.

Even so -- and especially in the case of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time -- these 2160p transfers are upscaled from the original source, so you likely won't notice massive gains in the visual department.

Like Shout Factory's recent 4K editions of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Wolf Children (which incidentally sandwich Summer Wars in Hosada's early filmography), this new 2160p/HDR10 transfer is upscaled and thus won't reveal massive gains over its remastered Blu-ray counterpart. You can see those linked reviews for a general idea of what to expect here since their general visual aesthetics are similar... especially The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which likewise shares a number of digitally-created sequences that break from real-world dramatics. The 4K's overall appearance is smooth and clean with well-defined linework, a color palette that appears faithful to its source, and as a bonus the UHD's superior encoding all but eliminates any hints of compression artifacts... even if its status as a triple-layered disc seems like overkill, given that its bonus features are totally relegated to the included Blu-ray disc. I'll admit that its HDR layer makes the overall picture look a bit dimmer by comparison than expected, but on the other hand it tamps down some of the film's otherwise garishly bright moments while supporting its subtle and muted colors more effectively. So while Summer Wars' upscaled transfer may not be a game-changer for most viewers, it's certainly nice to have the option and any of its improvements will be noticed more fully on a larger screen.

Summer Wars 4K Blu-ray, Audio Quality

Summer Wars' unusual and chaotic plot unavoidably translates to a fairly active soundstage once the action heats up so, much like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, this DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix offers a potent and effective blend of crisp dialogue and lively action sequences. While I don't have Funimation's 2011 Blu-rayor any more recent edition on hand for a direct comparison, I wouldn't expect that either of the two primary audio options included on this disc -- the original Japanese as well as a decent English dub -- sound meaningfully different than either earlier lossless track. This is especially true because I made the same general observations that Dustin Somner took note of in his linked review, so please see his write-up for more details about what to expect from these 5.1 mixes.

While I'm not sure about the subtitle options found on those earlier releases, both the 4K and Blu-ray included here offer separate English subtitle options for the dub and Japanese track, which is very much appreciated.

Summer Wars 4K Blu-ray, Special Features and Extras

This two-disc release ships in semi-gloss Steelbook packaging, with the front cover depicting a striking image of the mighty King Kazma leaping into action and surrounded by over a dozen Polly Possums, which is protagonist Kenji's new avatar. The Polly Possum army continues on the back, which also features a number of other colorful elements from "OZ", the film's chaotic online world. Inside is a whiplash-inducing tonal jump, depicting a subtle and serene moment from the film's third act. This is a solid design overall, unavoidably bipolar in its design scheme just like the film itself. Both discs sit on overlapping hubs and the extras listed below can only be found on the included Blu-ray copy of the film. All are carried over from Funimation's 2011 Blu-ray and are in Japanese with forced English subtitles.

Summer Wars 4K Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

Japanese animator Mamoru Hosada's broad filmography has proven divisive in different eras, from his first venture as the director of Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island all the way through to his recent films like The Boy and the Beast, Mirai, Belle, and last year's Scarlet, all of which he also wrote. For many, the sweet spot in his back catalog are his first three "official" films: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children, each released in three-year increments between 2006-2012 and penned by the talented screenwriter Satoko Okudera. These three vastly different pictures are available as recent 4K/Blu-ray Steelbooks from Shout Factory (which may or may still not still be Amazon exclusives), and all are worth picking up at their current price points. Summer Wars may not be the best place to start to those new to his work, but it's a creative and visually interesting film with plenty of interesting ideas.
